story??? just found the story here .

Some of the commments from people about the story (which they apparently had at lunchtime too) were absolutely shocking - "it's disgusting" were among ones that stuck out at me. Not wanting to get into a huge breast/bottle/formula advertising debate about it (as I'm going to work tonight so won't be around to partcipate until tomorrow afternoon/evening.

But I'm sure it's attitudes like that which have a bigger impact on a woman's decision to breastfeed, than some formula advertising.

Has the guy been sacked????

have I missed something?

If he has then that will make his attitude to bf ever worse....what he needed was education in the facts, not punishing him. Once he realised how stupid he had been then it would be a good time to appologise to the poor woman, but sack him?

Gobbledigook · 23/11/2005 12:26

No he hasn't but someone on this thread (can't remember who now and thread is too long to search!) suggested he should be sacked which I thought was a rather hysterical response.

Blandmum · 23/11/2005 12:40

Right, I feel a bit better now!

I do think that the guy needs some education. For that matter some general education for the population at large would be a nice idea.

You don't change people's minds by pissing them off do you? And if he was sacked he would think of b/feeders as a bunch of vinductive harpies, and that would make him ever less likely to support b/f

hunkermunker · 23/11/2005 12:46

So putting aside the reaction of one person on this thread, GDG, was the policeman right to do what he did? Is it wrong for a woman to bfeed in public?

Blandmum · 23/11/2005 12:48

If course it isn't wrong to bf in public!

It isn't wrong to eat in public, or go topless on the beach

I think it was wrong to pass on the complaint to the woman but I don't think the PC was exactly harrassing her was he/she? How do we know this wasn't a probationer who just thought they were doing the right thing by passing it on?

A bit annoying but I don't think we need to bay for blood exactly! This is one PC that made a mistake - the next PC may have told the complainant to bog off!

Blandmum · 23/11/2005 12:54

I don't see where this says that gdg thinks it is wrong to bf in public....but I am feeling sick and therefore I'm not the sharpest pencil in the box today.

JoolsToo · 23/11/2005 13:31

that's right mb

hunkermunker · 23/11/2005 13:33

No, sorry, wasn't saying that GDG had said that it was wrong. Just trying to get at why she doesn't think it's important enough to post about, is all.

Gobbledigook · 23/11/2005 13:36

It's the strength of the reaction that I found shocking - suggesting a police officer is sacked for this is utterly ridiculous.

Blandmum · 23/11/2005 13:37

i think joolstoo should be sacked for agreeing that i'm not the sharpest pencil in the drawer!

Gobbledigook · 23/11/2005 13:38

hehehe!!

handlemecarefully · 23/11/2005 13:39

Oh bless martianbishop - you lost your way a bit there! Hope you start feeling a bit better ...

Blandmum · 23/11/2005 13:40

Couldn't wade through the whole thread....didn't have the stomach for it (bad pun)

hunkermunker · 23/11/2005 14:02

But GDG, that was only one person who said that, iirc. OK, I said he should be given a painful wedgie, but that's understandable, surely?

shamrockchipmonkey · 23/11/2005 14:06

Haven't read the the whole thread but here in Ireland it is illegal to harass a woman for breastfeeding in public and if in a cafe the staff are responsible for making sure someone is not harrassed.

Eaney · 23/11/2005 14:29

I don't think it's about breastfeeding alone it's about the prudishness in this society. What exactly is offensive about breastfeeding. Are men afraid that they are going to get turned on because the mere sight of a breast sends then into a spin. Why are women offended?

On Mathew Wright he said that they phoned 8 well know resturaunts and asked if it was OK to breasfeed there.

Gordon Ramsey said No
GAry Rhodes said No
Jamie Olive and A W Thompson said OK.

Did I hear this correctly? I'm pretty sure I did but I can't quite believe it.

Tinker · 23/11/2005 14:32

They all said it was fine to breastfeed. Gordon Ramsay was going on about how great it was on Parky once.

Eaney · 23/11/2005 14:40

I thought I heard M Wright saying the Resturaunts were devided on this issue. Must have heard wrong.

handlemecarefully · 23/11/2005 15:29

Gordon Ramsey on that room 101 programme said that he had never changed a nappy (despite having several children). He isn't your most post modern man

handlemecarefully · 23/11/2005 15:30

Oh didn't notice Tinker's post - he said he was ok with it? I'm pleasantly suprised

beatie · 23/11/2005 15:30

I've heard Gordon Ramsay raving about BF too.... I think it was on Jonathan Ross.

snafu · 23/11/2005 15:34

Because it's just like taking a piss in a doorway, apparently...

handlemecarefully · 23/11/2005 15:56

Some scary opinions on there snafu - but at least one or two voices of reason thankfully

moondog · 23/11/2005 15:59

YOU shouldn't be asking for permission-you just do it.
