story??? just found the story here .

Some of the commments from people about the story (which they apparently had at lunchtime too) were absolutely shocking - "it's disgusting" were among ones that stuck out at me. Not wanting to get into a huge breast/bottle/formula advertising debate about it (as I'm going to work tonight so won't be around to partcipate until tomorrow afternoon/evening.

But I'm sure it's attitudes like that which have a bigger impact on a woman's decision to breastfeed, than some formula advertising.

hi karma. March this year, had a car accident (collision with a motorbike, noone hurt thank goodness) with DD (aged 3 months) and DH in the car. The police were passing and helped out, I was quite hysterical, DD was hungry, and so was fed in the front seat of the police car whilst they tried to move my car and sort out the traffic. Chatted to all sorts of people and witnesses during. Didn't even occur to me that I wouldn't feed her!
But of course, I only did that so that I could flash my norks!

ohKARMAallyefaithfulMOTHER · 22/11/2005 15:42

ha ha, you rampant nork-flasher! Actually, this all reminds me of something my DP said a few weeks ago. He is a copper & said he saw a BFing woman in a shopping centre & was offended.(he was off-duty at the time) He admitted he couldn't actually see any boob but he didn't think it was appropriate. Can you imagine my response to him?!! I've tried (believe me, I've tried) to change his narrow-minded views on BFing as a whole but to no avail. I'm going to ask him when he gets home from work what he would've done if he was the officer in question. Will let you know tomorrow.

SeaShells · 22/11/2005 15:46

I first read this story in the Sun newspaper... a few pages after the page 3, with norks out for all.
Seems it's only ok for women to show their breasts in public if its purely for male titilation, yet not for the actual thing they were intended for.. to feed babies. ???

Arghhhhhhhhhhhhh makes me sooooo mad.

ButtonMoon · 22/11/2005 15:53

Oh how I wait for someone to ask me to stop feeding or move...I'm ready and waiting to be handcuffed and dragged away!?! Friend s of mine were asked to stop feeding in a local cafe once, as she was putting off others ....she did leave but I suppose it is different than being outside in a public place.....think we should gather as many bfeeders together and organise a sit-in!!!! LOL

MissChief · 22/11/2005 15:58

maybe I've been lucky - but don't understand where this hostility comes from - honestly yet to encounter it where I live. Generally people seem not to bat an eyelid, the occasional teen & older man (such as my dad even though he's incredibly supportive) may squirm but this isn't worthy of a reaction IMO.

fifilala · 22/11/2005 16:11

Just listened to a discussion about this on Rad 2 - Jeremy Vine, people were actually saying it is their right "not to have to look at someone who is breast feeding"-they interviewed the girl who the police came to.

Also a pub landlady said she did not agree with people BF in the pub, but didn't mind if it was in the toilet - the girl quite rightly said - how many other people like to eat their dinner in the loo............

When I lived in Scotland, i remember my BF group going to Starbucks and 8 of us doing it at the same time!!!!!

hunkermunker · 22/11/2005 16:15

They shouldn't bloody look then! Gah, stupid people! It's not like someone welds their eyes open and straps their head facing in the direction of the norks! (Although it's tempting...)

Tinker · 22/11/2005 16:24

Listening to JV now. Who is this stupid Ann Leslie soundalike insisting you should use EBM when out?

MeAndMyBoy · 22/11/2005 16:39

Just a thought, it has been suggested by people on the various radio shows to cover yourself up while your feeding? surely that just draws more attention to yourself? most people wouldn't notice you cuddling a baby.

Well done to Gizmo - fab response to the Police.

What about having a page 3 spread of women feeding their babies? seeing as that's what we're getting our norks out for anyway.

H x

daisy1999 · 22/11/2005 16:43

I apologise if I'm repeating what's already been said but I haven't read the whole thread. I find this unbelievable I think the Scottish law (where it illegal to stop a woman breatfeeding in a public place) should be brought in throughout the UK.

ruty · 22/11/2005 16:48

exactly beatie - it is quite fine for men to ogle page 3 whrever they like but a mothere feeding her child! Disgusting. Well done gizmo.

hunkermunker · 22/11/2005 16:51

EBM when out. Oh, yes, great idea. What do you do when you are feeding your baby EBM when he or she needs a feed and your boobs are bursting - express at the same time?! Actually...PMSL - that'd be funny! A breastpump is waaay more obvious than a baby!

MeAndMyBoy · 22/11/2005 16:57

He he hunker, that would really make people look, especially if you did with a double

Enid · 22/11/2005 16:59

oh dear

i got a bit cross

Following the news reports about one of your officers appraoching a breastfeeding woman and passing on a complaint about her breastfeeding in public, may I remind you that breastfeeding is perfectly legal and quite honestly if I had been in her position I would have totally ignored the police officer involved.

I think this is a shocking case and reminded me of the news reports last month about the police being ill-educated. I hope that measures will be put in place to stop this ever happening again and that the woman involved receives a full and frank apology.

You should be ashamed of yourselves,

Gizmo · 22/11/2005 17:03

Heee heee

Way to go Enid

georginars · 22/11/2005 17:32

Angie Greaves on LBC also said that she thought using a shawl/pashmina drew more attention - I agree, my baby would just have delighted in waving it around.
And as for EBM - my baby wouldn't take a bottle for love nor money so no chance there. Perhaps people would have preferred the screaming marathon that would have ensued if I'd tried to feed her the bottle. Forgot to say that when I was on the radio, to busy ranting about stupidity and the British attitude to norks!
As for people's right not to look - well, you don't need to look! Just as I choose not to look at many many things, such as shelves of girly mags, page 3, revolting topless men wobbling all over the place in the summer, and people picking their nose at the traffic lights!

Gizmo · 22/11/2005 17:35

Tiktok has just made the glorious point on the other thread that when she was very little, she was taught that it is rude to stare because it makes people uncomfortable.

If it's rude to stare at someone with a spot on their nose, aren't b/fing mums entitled to the same manners?

FairyMum · 22/11/2005 17:41

I actually think it's very anti-women. It was only yetserday it was your own fault for being raped if you were flirting in a mini skirt and today you should bf your baby in the toilets.

moondog · 22/11/2005 17:43

Dunno if I like the implication that b/feeding is somehow unfortunate like acne....

georginars · 22/11/2005 17:53

yes, am trying not to equate breastfeeding with anything unpleasant but finding it hard to find appropriate examples! I didn't mean to equate it with nose picking - just that I don't look at things that I don't like to see. Oh it's difficult to explain, I think you know what I mean - if the feeding is offensive to someone I'm afraid they have no legal or moral right to complain, just look away. But I still can't understand WHY brestfeeding is offensive! The nearest any callers on the radio could come to was that it was embarassing - diddums - with an undercurrent from some men that they basically didn't like to see breasts 'on display' that couldn't access.

georginars · 22/11/2005 17:54

that they (the men) couldn't access I mean. It really is quite misogynistic - please put your norks away, they're for men....

moondog · 22/11/2005 17:57

Yes,my attitude is...
Feel free not to approve of breastfeeding in public and I'll feel free not to give a flying fuck about the opinions of mentalists.

Done and dusted.

aloha · 22/11/2005 18:05

Can the police be prosecuted for wasting their own time?
Still think the bastard should be fired.

Skyler · 22/11/2005 18:14

Bloody hell. This makes me and . I feed dd anywhere and everywhere in front of anyone, and make no apologies for it. Totally shocking.
FIT - There is a gvt info advert that was made with a young Raj Persuad in. It is broadcast to us occasionally on BFBS TV. Shame it isn't on mainstream TV as it DOES show b/f in public (lady in a cafe).

mummydear · 22/11/2005 18:21

I was absoultey amazed when I heard about this and outraged that the police officer handled it this way.

I had been a police officer for 17yrs , prior to my career break and the last 7 of it as a Sergeant. I think the actions of the officer was not due to being ill educated but probably lack of life experince. I remember at the age of 19yrs going to domestic violence situations and telling people what to do , what the hell do I know.

I would imagine and hope that the officer involved was young and inexperinced , whether male or female it doesn't matter. the problem is that many young officers do not how to use their discretion and talk to people. also they are often afraid of members of the public making complaints against them. So if the officer hadn't spoken to the lady no doubt that member of the public would have made a complaint against him. So the officer has lost out either way.

If a member of the public had approached me, with my experince as a police officer and mother I would have given him appropraite advice, mainly go away little man, in the nicest possible way. I may have then gone over to the mum, and sat with her , I would have told her waht had happened but nothing else and no doubt have had a chat about the joys of mother hood.

if I had been the mother I would have told the officer what to do, so to speak.

if he was a constable on my team I given him a him a little chat in my office !!

Interesting that this thread about a police officer doing the wrong thing has generated 200 messages, yet the thread about police woman and mother being shot and killed generated under 20 !!

the Police - one week heroes , the next week villians.
