Oh I have the best music ever at the funeral story. a friend of mine was playing for an old (80s or 90s) lady's funeral, and she had specifically asked for Pop Goes the Weasel as the coffin was brought in.

At dh's funeral I chose Tom Petty's, 'I won't back down' - it was one of his favourites and the band that reminds me of him more than any other. It described him to a 'T'. I think the congregation were a little stunned as one of the lyrics is 'you can stand me up at the gates of hell, but I won't back down'. He would have found that amusing.

The 2nd one was Santana - 'love of my life'. Says it all really.

The 3rd one was Guns 'n' Roses - 'November Rain'. He chose to have this before he died. I found out afterwards from his best friend that the song is about a man who finds his true love but then shortly after she dies .

I don't think there are right or wrong choices really, it's should be whatever the person would have wanted or the closest person to them wants.

Im personally having time of your life by Greenday, and belike that by Three doors down.

At my dad's funeral my brother sang a song that my dad wrote a few years ago (dad was a comedy writer btw). It was called 'next time, i'm coming back as a card board box and get myself delivered to you' . Rather apt! If dad wasn't passed already, he may well have dropped off his perch with laughter at that anyway. Dad also 'played' at his own funeral too in a way as he was a musician too.

DelGirl · 17/11/2005 19:42

didn't you cod? I thought it was well known on here. Don't know why, I assumed you knew.

My step-nephew-in-law (21) had this played. Song by Phil Ochs (sp?) sung by Dick Gaughin)Stunning.

There's no place in this world where I'll belong when I'm gone
And I won't know the right from the wrong when I'm gone
And you won't find me singin' on this song when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

And I won't feel the flowing of the time when I'm gone
All the pleasures of love will not be mine when I'm gone
My pen won't pour out a lyric line when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

And I won't breathe the bracing air when I'm gone
And I can't even worry 'bout my cares when I'm gone
Won't be asked to do my share when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

And I won't be running from the rain when I'm gone
And I can't even suffer from the pain when I'm gone
Can't say who's to praise and who's to blame when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

Won't see the golden of the sun when I'm gone
And the evenings and the mornings will be one when I'm gone
Can't be singing louder than the guns when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

All my days won't be dances of delight when I'm gone
And the sands will be shifting from my sight when I'm gone
Can't add my name into the fight while I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

And I won't be laughing at the lies when I'm gone
And I can't question how or when or why when I'm gone
Can't live proud enough to die when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

You'll never walk alone is the worst.

My exboyfriend had a couple of Manic Street Preachers tracks. He was 26.

nooka · 17/11/2005 20:44

I've got that track fullmoonfield. It's beautiful (although sung in great folk tradition). My neice died a year ago at 27, and although I can't remember the track that was played at the end, I do remember her many friends and family dancing out of the church. It was a fantastic, and very moving service.

Yep, far too young. He had Hodgkins Lymphoma.

JoolsToo · 17/11/2005 21:50

also he was too lovely to die

Tommy · 18/11/2005 09:47

zippie - would that be The Fields of Athenrye" (not sure about the spelling) - a song about a young man's grave? Very sad but lovely.

zippitippitoes · 18/11/2005 09:51

Yes that's the one, thank you for posting..the title

sharklet · 18/11/2005 09:58

My Great Uncle died about 10 years ago. He was an atheist and had a humanist service. He had it all planned out down tot he music and everything. They played "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" from Monty Python's Life of Brian and "Mud Mud Glorious Mud"

Thinking about it makes me miss him he was a terrific guy. He was 96 when he died and still full of a wicked sense of humour.

I thought they were good choices. I can't stand the over weepy stuff. But then he'd lived a full life - I'd probably feel differently if it was someone who had died tragically young or such like.

gigglinggoblin · 18/11/2005 09:58

i suggested happy birthday for my grandads funeral and my whole family nearly fainted with shock at the thought (quite traditional people). but it was his birthday 3 days after the funeral and it was the song he always used to sing (regardless of whether or not it was anyones birthday - in fact it drove us mad a lot of the time) so they agreed after thinking about it for a while. made me smile as we left cos he would have liked it. it was him

laughinglil · 18/11/2005 14:52

when i was 16 my best friends boyfriend was killed in a car crash You'll never walk alone was played at his funeral it upsets me so much to hear that song.
At my grandads funeral we played unforgetable by nat king cole. He truly was unforgetable.

Cam · 18/11/2005 15:09

I want "Try a Little Tenderness" by Otis Redding; at my brother's funeral 4 years ago (he was 40) he had an Elton John number and a Bruce Springsteen number , both chosen by him before he died. They were his favourite pop stars so it fitted, I would have cried non-stop whatever was playing though, it was terribly sad.

misdee · 18/11/2005 15:49

When we were 18, a friend was killed walking down the motorway drunk. They played rave music at his funeral, it was nice because rave was him IYKWIM.

sparklymieow · 18/11/2005 15:51

whoops that was me not misdee

Lio · 18/11/2005 15:56

These are such nice and such sad stories. I'm all for having whatever the person loved, although would feel a bit itchy and being made to emote to Celine Dion.

Pop Goes the Weasel and Return to Sender are classic!
