Just realised that for the first time ever (I think) I'm cheering on the Tories against Labour!

OMG I'm going to have to rush out and buy a union jack and get my hair done in a blue rinse. I found myself saying during PM "Good on yer, Tories" about them not supporting the 90 days extension this evening.

Do I have to move to Surrey now?

carla, it isn't difficult to know the conditions under which detainees under interrogation are kept.

You will soon graduate to Guantamao type conditions, where 32 inmates have tried to commit suicide, and this when Islam prohibits suicide, saying that those who do so will end up forever in Hell.

The British bobby used to be a friendly one, but I have seen enough to realise that theat sterotype no longer holds true.

What happens when someone has power, particularly that of the state behind him/her, that atrocities start being committed.

Read the history of all struggles, and you will see that when the state responds with undue force, resentment grows, and there is more civil unrest.

The British have avoided bloody revolutions because they are better at learning from history than the others.

Learn from history and psychology now, before a generation or two are condemned to misery.

I think we could ALL benefit from learning from history!

Firstly -- I have to say I am totally disgusted at the anti police sentiment that is being thrown about on this thread by certain people.

Secondly -- There are bound to be lots of people who automatically object to the 90 day rule after the disgusting way humans are being handled by the US is there any wonder, BUT I do think that a lot of people are forming an opinion on this with out first looking into the rules and regulations that will govern such legislation.
I have looked at this in great detail and have to say that I agree with the 90 day rule and wish that it had been passed.

Out of interest how many 90 day objectors are happy with the 28 day law.

Caligula · 10/11/2005 13:29

Oh fgs whenever you allude to proven facts which show the police in a bad light, you're accused of being anti-police. I suppose you're referring to my comments Flutterbee. Well guess what, it's on record that the Police have frequently and enthusiastically beaten up suspects. It's on record that they couldn't be arsed to investigate Stephen Lawrence's death. It's on record that they shot dead an unsuspecting man on the London Underground. None of these things are made up, or argued about. They happened. Alluding to them, doesn't make someone anti-police.

Mr Blair's spokesman reiterated the prime minister's view that there was now a "worrying gap" between parliament and the public on the reality of the terrorist threat.

politics.guardian.co.uk/terrorism/story/0,15935,1639215,00.html

go ahead Mr Blair, dissolve the Parliament.

Heathcliffscathy · 10/11/2005 15:40

this is all such an incredible ego trip for him....

and i don't think 28 days is acceptable either.

basically, either charge someone or keep them unders surveillance if you really feel they are up to something and then as soon as you have some evidence charge them.

it's like simon hughes said last night on newsnight (thought he and david davis were both v good) it's fine for most people when they're thinking in terms of terrorists....lock em up and throw away they key they think....but what about your son/daughter/father/brother??? 24 hours in detention without trial or charge is totally traumatic for the innocent people that it sometimes happens to.

it's so simple: if we allow the terrorists to take our basic freedoms and the rule of law away, what on earth are we defending ourselves from, we quickly become as bad as they are.

we're so quick to condemn dictatorships for this very thing: being able to lock people up that they don't like.

Cam · 10/11/2005 20:12

If the govt went along with what the vociferous minority of the public want we'd not only have the 90 day anti-terror law, we'd have the death penalty re-instated.

I have to believe its a only a minority that think like this otherwise I'd despair...

HRHWickedwaterwitch · 10/11/2005 20:17

Well I never Caligula, I didn't think you would have started this thread! But I totally kwym and was relieved that Bliar didn't get away with this.

Caligula · 10/11/2005 20:26

May I just clarify here: "cheering on" the Tories for me, doesn't actually mean I'm remotely thinking of voting for them.

I can't imagine any situation where I'd even consider it seriously. Although who knows, Blair could yet surprise me.

I think it depends what your local options are Caligula, frankly I would vote for anyone (bar NF) who could get out my local Labour MP

Caligula · 10/11/2005 20:30

I like my local one. He's one of the usual suspects - habitual rebel, good on 'im.

Mine's one of only about 2 in the whole of the Commons who have always voted with TB and he's a really unpleasant 2 faced nobody who's just doing the job for the pension he'll get......I've had the misfortune to meet him in person
