Just realised that for the first time ever (I think) I'm cheering on the Tories against Labour!

OMG I'm going to have to rush out and buy a union jack and get my hair done in a blue rinse. I found myself saying during PM "Good on yer, Tories" about them not supporting the 90 days extension this evening.

Do I have to move to Surrey now?

don't you get the feeling though, that if the Tories were in power, they would be supporting this and that the only reason they are against it, is to try and be an 'opposition'?

Besides, they all seem to agree on some form of detention - at the moment, it is 14 days and they may well compromise to either 28 or 60 days.

foxinsocks · 09/11/2005 14:55

except for lib dems of course who are entirely against detention without reason

northerner · 09/11/2005 15:05

Could never vote Tory. And certainly not for David 'I took Cocaine in my younger days but that's irellevant now' Cameron.

PARP

twinsetandpearls · 09/11/2005 15:12

I don;t think I could vote tory, despite my twinset and pearls but I am starting to see them as a credible oppostion and can see them regaining power if not at the next election almost certainly at the one after.

Gobbledigook · 09/11/2005 15:18

Love it Caligula!

Janh · 09/11/2005 15:18

Somebody remind me precisely when the Tories turned into such staunch supporters of civil liberties? Did the lightbulb go on before they realised how tight this vote was going to get....

Bozza · 09/11/2005 15:27

foxinsocks I heard a LibDem MP on the radio at lunchtime saying they were going to be voting for 28 days.

Gem754 · 09/11/2005 15:28

I don't care why they're opposing it - just grateful they are. Don't see how The Joker (Blair really doesn't look like that villian from Batman) thinks we can protect our countries rights by removing the things protected by our countries rights. By changing like this we'd be doing exactly what the terrorists want.

Long way of saying it, but I know what you mean Caligula.

twinsetandpearls · 09/11/2005 16:53

What I don;t understand is that when the Tories are accused as political oppurtunism by opposing the vote, which like Janh I suspect as the tories and civil liberties are not natural bedfellows we hear that public opinion is on Tony Blairs side so the Tories are in fact so principled.

But I am yet to discuss this with anyone who thinks the terror bill is acceptable, and I hardly think I am in the land of the chattering classes.

So who is supporting this Bill? Other than Blair, Murdoch and Bill Cash?

twinsetandpearls · 09/11/2005 16:58

Well the house of commons don't support it.

That was quite a big defeat.

I can see 28 days getting it.

RTKangaMummy · 09/11/2005 18:07

Taking the actual politics out of the equation for a minute

IMHO I think that the 90 rule should have been enforced for terrorists

piffle · 09/11/2005 18:08

Result!

piffle · 09/11/2005 18:09

To argue that, even had they had that law it would not have stopped Sept 11th or the London bombings.

RTKangaMummy · 09/11/2005 18:13

I am not really interested in politics TBH

Cos IMHO they are ALL as bad as each other

Whichever party they are in

JoolsToo · 09/11/2005 18:15

yes Kanga but do they wear sticky out frocks for the party?

RTKangaMummy · 09/11/2005 18:17

I don't know

Nightynight · 09/11/2005 18:58

oh come on Caligula - what are the Tories supporting then ? 89 days? You just know that if they were in power, they'd all be sticking up for 1,00000090 days like mad.

pull that veil off your eyes woman!

aloha · 09/11/2005 18:59

god caligula - snap! what does that say about the modern labour part, eh?

aloha · 09/11/2005 19:02

agree with sophable that it is good to have some real opposition. much healthier.

martha kearney (sp) clearly reaaly liked both davids!

Tinker · 09/11/2005 19:10

God, everyone who rings teh Jeremy Vine show supports the 90 days. One even wanted 6 months.

aloha · 09/11/2005 19:18

99% of people who ring phone-ins are barking.

aloha · 09/11/2005 19:18

And didn't Hitler get VOTED in?

Tinker · 09/11/2005 19:20

Another one thought all teenagers who had sex under 16 should be prosecuted, cos that'd teach 'em and put an end to teenage pregnancies.

tiredemma · 09/11/2005 19:24

at the risk of being humilated and burned at the stake..... is it really 'wrong' to agree to 90 days extension? I can see logic in the police's need for it, why in that case is it so wrong and why the outcry?

im not being argumentative, I genuinly do not understand why there is such a big hoo-haa about it.

moondog · 09/11/2005 19:24

True enough.
As if the Tories give a flying fart about civil liberties!
(Still like William though.)

Mind you,Charles Clarke doesn't inspire confidence does he? Reminds me of the many well meaning but basically hopelessly ineffectual headmasters I have dealt with over the years.
