Anyone else think that she should be doing the work that is associated with her new life of luxury? Justify the expense to the taxpayer and get out and fulfil the usual royal diary of visits.

I hope she does something though.

As a sahm for nearly 3 years now (raising my kids in their younger years) I am going apeshit with the boredom and lonliness.

Mind you, I bet money could buy her some company and some awesome things to do. I'd hack off my arm to have a job though - doesn't matter how much cash you have, sitting around all day is lonely, tiresome and horrid. I bet she'll have some 'only woman in the world' moments too. And not in a good way.

meditrina · 03/05/2011 10:39

All it really says is that in the early months, there are no solo engagements planned. I think that's fair enough - I think anyone would want to get some more experience in such a high profile role before going solo. The Canada trip in July will be an important step towards that.

Also, she'll be inundated with offers for things like charitable involvement, and I expect it will take some time to work out how much she can take on, when and for whom. I think it took a while before Diana took on an independent role too - the only difference really beingbthat Charles had a full load of public engagements at the time of his marriage, whereas William has a full-time military role yet still manages a representational one on top of that.

And I think portofino's point about the Queen taking the opportunity early in her married life to have a little while living as privately as possible is well made, and I don't begrudge the Cambridges a similar chance.

And I'd guess that the thank-you letters would be a nigh on full time job for a while!

So you see Kate as some sort of commodity And you want your moneys worth? - charming

diddl · 03/05/2011 10:45

I agree that if she rushes out doing stuff alone she´ll be "wanting the limelight", "upstaging PW".

Likewise, she needs to pick charities carefully otherwise she´ll be emulating/copying Diana.

If she´s going back to living as she did before-is she costing any morethan then?

And they haven´t had the honeymoon get, have they?
(Over here it was reported as being the Seychelles).

I do hope you hector SAHMs who received a state education on that basis toughasoldboots. After all the taxpayer subsidised that too. I hear there are even some on MN who have school aged children and are sat on their arses right now. If you're quick you could catch some at it. Do link to your thread on the subject, I'd love to read their responses.

The Duchess of Cambridge is being supported by her husband, who works. Prince William doesn't actually receive any money from the civil list, as it happens. He gets an allowance from the Queen, who claims it as a tax deductable expense of doing her job ie being Queen.

You seem to resent people who have been funded by the taxpayer not providing their pound of flesh. There are hundreds of thousands of economically inactive people in this country. I just hope you are consistent in your principals, that's all. However I can see you aren't.

thefatishistory · 03/05/2011 11:01

If you have a problem with her staying at home and living on payments from the state, do you have the same problem with women staying at home and living on benefits I'm talking about those with no intention of finding a job to support themselves. Its about the same imho.

Are they? So all SAHMs partners are higher rate tax payers? News to me. Prince William isn't, of course, but then he doesn't earn enough.

Probably not. But then they wouldn't give a rats arse about your chippy moaning either.

Niceguy2 · 03/05/2011 11:14

The money that the Royal family get is from tax payers, the security budget( which is huge) is not paid for from the civil list. The met police and Scotland yard are having to absorb the cost this year from an already reduced budget

Well let's look at the facts eh? The royal family get £40 million a year from the civil list. The crown estate contributes £200 million to the treasury. Does the police security cost £160 million a year? I doubt it. Even if we assume it costs another £40 million a year to protect them (which seems a lot), we're still running at a profit from them.

Plus don't forget all the tourism £££'s they earn us from all the oriental & american's who flock to our shores each year who all for some strange reason adore our monarchy. Last time I read, they measured that contribution to be around £500 million per year.

I personally am not a royalist. I view them as akin to Mickey Mouse & Disney. Disney wouldn't axe their mascot because he's costing a few bucks and neither should we. All that pomp & ceremony which we're good at and the tourists love. Why not keep it? Hell we even make money from it.

She wants to be an "ordinary RAF wife" Hmm. I do like her, but FFS, try living in a married quarter and all the crap that goes with it then she can call herself ordinary RAF wife.

Ok rant over

hmmm, nothing like a bit of inverted snobbery is there. Hmm

It's nothing short of sour grapes imho.

Kate will serve her country for the next 50 years or so - somehow I don't think that not going out to work for two of those is really a big deal.

diddl · 03/05/2011 11:30

Those moaning about taxes-if the Monarchy is abolished, would taxes be reduced & palaces sold off & everyone gets a share?

Kate's parents own a company worth 30 million - the taxes they pay on that keep quite a few layabouts in skyTV and Nike trainers - and the reason some SS centres are closing has nothing to do with the royal family - it's to do with the incompetence of some local councils - mostly Labour run.

wannaBe · 03/05/2011 11:43

but it sounds like jealousy because it's all about money. It's always the same "oh x earns thousands why don't they buy/spend/give/why should I...."

The royals bring in far more than they receive. So by all means get rid of them and then... oh then close a few more hospitals and surestart centres because the money they bring won't be there any more either. But at least Kate might have to actually work for a living ey. Hmm
