Now women can't cook to save their lives! here this
Mmmm, I can see what he is getting at but he is forgetting that women can choose whether or not they want to cook.
Personally, I tend to mostly cook from fresh and freeze. That way DH and I have our own ready meal, particularly on the days that we both work. However, about a couple of times a month we have a frozen pizza with frozen chips and baked beans. Big deal!
Is it me or does the media really like to have a pop at women? If we work, we are either neglecting our children or are too selfish to have children. If we stay at home with our children, we are turning them into clingy, crying whelps who will never break free from the apron strings and we must have brains that resemble a black hole. I could go on but can't be bothered. I have fretful, teething 20 month old twin boys, DH is working away, I work 3 days a week, and I'm tired. Off to bed now.

Bless him, he does like to make a fuss, doesn't he? I don't really mind his comments tbh - I'm one of the women who can't cook (beyond a very limited repetoire) as that's dh's thing.

But I can forgive GR, having eaten at his restaurant (Gordon Ramsey in Chelsea). Boy, that man knows how to run a great restaurant, and how to bring on talented staff.

hunkerpumpkin · 24/10/2005 21:43

He has a new series on TV...say no more

monkeytrousers · 25/10/2005 08:30

He's just a big prick (Sorry Sherlock!)

Carmenere · 25/10/2005 08:48

He does have a point though. There is a whole generation of women who are not learning to cook as they would have typically in bygone days. How are you supposed to learn to cook when your mum is working full time to pay the mortgage. She doesn't have time to cook and you have no one to learn from. The obvious quick solution to this problem is to use convenience foods.

Jamie Oliver said a very interesting thing when he was on Parkinson, he said that the government happily encourage women to the work place and take their taxes but have done nothing to replace the work that women traditionally have done in the home. I think that statement is exactly on the button. The work women have tradtionally done in the home was and is very important and now it is being neglected as modern life demands that we work for cash to meet the ever increasing cost of living.

Please don't misunderstand me I think every woman should have the right to choose to work (I myself do) but I think that the casual disregard of the importance of womens roles in the home may well have disaterous consequences.

Frizbe · 25/10/2005 08:50

well said there Carne!

Bozza · 25/10/2005 08:59

Very interesting point Carmenere. But, of course, GR has to say that men are doing the cooking now. I think maybe some men are picking up the slack in the kitchen and some men remain useless. I know for a fact that in our house, it would be DH doing the frozen pizza, chips and beans if he was to cook anything. Although actually I do the same thing as speedymama (and also work 3 days a week) - ie make my own frozen meals. But GR probably disapproves of that.

Caligula · 25/10/2005 09:04

I like Jamie Oliver more and more.

And Gordon Ramsey less and less.

Carmenere · 25/10/2005 09:08

I'm a trained chef and I have lots and lots of professional respect for Gordon Ramsay. I will listen to his opinions on cooking in the same way as I will listen to Tom Cruises opinions on acting. But when it comes to their opinions on women.....

Bozza · 25/10/2005 09:45
Grin
expatinscotland · 25/10/2005 09:49

I think he finds it amusing to stir the pot.

edam · 25/10/2005 10:17

Do you really think TC has much to say about acting? Can think of better people to hear!

expatinscotland · 25/10/2005 10:20

TC certainly has a lot ot say about childbirth and post-natal depression, especially for one who has not and never will experience either one.

Carmenere · 25/10/2005 10:20

No I don't Edam - infact I was just being generous - I'm actually not interested in anything TC has to say

QueenVictoria · 25/10/2005 10:26

I dont think GR is wrong - he just hasnt analysed the facts just stated them.

Jamie Oliver is brilliant, good post carmenere.

ernest · 25/10/2005 10:56

he's clearly visited my mum & mil then. And my sil. He's 100% accurate as far as my family goes, except me of course.

teeavee · 25/10/2005 11:06

it's just overblown media hype for his new series

puff · 25/10/2005 11:12

It's all tongue in cheek - one of his best chefs is female - Angela something? Isn't she Head Chef at Claridges? bet she's laughing her head off.

CarolinaFullMoon · 25/10/2005 11:38

it is kind of true though isn't it? There are women on here who can't make a cheese sauce. Maybe if home economics or whatever it's called these days was taught more excitingly than when I was at school, we'd all be able to throw a meal together, male or female.

Have to say the men I know who can cook (not dp, sadly) do tend to fall into that stereotype of only doing the "glory" cooking - dinner parties, bbqs and xmas - and none of the ordinary day-to-day cooking. Am sure there are plenty of exceptions out there though .

buffytheharpsichordcarrier · 25/10/2005 11:56

god there is nothing worse imho than an unrecontructed prick with a vaild point, is there?
yes we should all learn to cook
MEN TOO

pretty much everything I know about food and cooking I learned from my mum

RachD · 25/10/2005 11:57

Nearly all, most of my friends can't cook.
All pre-cooked, shove in the microwave lasagne etc.
None of them can actually make lasagne.

I only know 3 who can manage a roast.
And thay can cook really well. Their mums did too - which I think explains it all.

My mum used to do dinner parties for 8 - beef encrout etc etc - 3 or 4 courses.
Without even blinking.

Now I can do a good roast, lasagne, shep pie etc etc.
But I can't to beef wellington and I can't do a top class dinner party for 8.

This GR thing is silly, but it is true that we are slowing losing all the cooking skills and experience.

And that really makes me sad

Bozza · 25/10/2005 12:09

RachD - similar experiences to you. Friends who can't really cook, but my own skills are at about a level with yours I would say. Although my Mum never did fancy dinner parties she taught me the basics including white sauce . Certainly never learned anything like that at school. i also agree with buffy - its a pity so many men and women can't cook.

noddyholder · 25/10/2005 12:32
