her.

This is good news but am I the only one to be Shock at 70,000 followers? These also apparently included teachers and police officers. Makes me much more paranoid than I am usually inclined to be.

When I read the news I was horrified by the fact that amongst the people involved in this paedophile ring where teachers, scout leaders and police officers: people, one should trust. Although relieved by the fact that this has been uncovered this is not the end of the story: the threat is still out there and it is not necessarily so far from home: it is not unknown of children being abused by family friends or close relations a child implicitly trust: BIG QUESTION: how do you protect your child from this without turning paranoid??? How long is the step from searching the internet for imagines of child abuse to search for your own victims

BIG QUESTION: how do you protect your child from this without turning paranoid???

The best way to protect your child is to live life normally and don't worry about it.

The media hypes up the threat because it plays into our darkest fear for our kids. As abhorrent as the crimes are, it is still extremely rare.

In my opinion you do more damage to the child by becoming helicopter parents who demand anyone who comes within 15m of their cotton wool child is CRB checked.

Horrific all round - but thank goodness the hard work of those who have to investigate such horrors has paid off.

As to scout leaders, police and teachers being involved - just remember, there are hundreds of thousands of these professionals and the vast majority are NOT part of this. Teachers generally don't have the kind of one to one access needed to abuse a child anyway.

How to protect your children? Be part of a community; make it your business to know who your neighbours are; make it your business to know where your children are and the sort of people they hang around with...and don't allow yourself (as a previous poster said) be sucked into media hype and fear everything.

google it
its called the COPINE scale.
you might regret doing so though.
Not all od scouting involves staying overnight.
on that basis youd not let your kids do anything with men. oh and with women either.

withagoat · 19/03/2011 15:56

yes its on wiki
it is referred to as copine - apprently thats wrong.
