On one hand I'm pleased as he is quite clearly a nasty little bigot, on the other I'm quite shocked they've taken such a strong stance with their incredibly successful designer. Good on them ...

good

AbsDuCroissant · 01/03/2011 15:42

Awesome.

I also liked Natalie Portman's statement. My girl crush on that woman deepens daily

MaryAnnSingleton · 01/03/2011 15:43

well done Dior

RamblingRosa · 01/03/2011 15:44

What did Natalie Portman say?

If he really did make those anti-semitic comments then I think it's absolutely right that they fired him. I don't see how they could do anything else really.

minibmw2010 · 01/03/2011 15:54

This is what she said (she's the spokeswoman for one of the Dior perfumes but didn't wear Dior to the Oscars on Sunday):

"I am deeply shocked and disgusted by the video of John Galliano's comments that surfaced today," she said in a statement issued last night. "In light of this video, and as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr. Galliano in any way. I hope at the very least, these terrible comments remind us to reflect and act upon combating these still-existing prejudices that are the opposite of all that is beautiful."

[applauds Natalie]

BromptonBugle · 01/03/2011 16:04

Thank Heavens for That - What took them so long?

franke · 01/03/2011 16:43

Shame Natalie Portman couldn't display the same clarity of thought over Roman Polanski (who's Petition to support his release she signed). Good on Dior though.

Katiekitty · 01/03/2011 21:43

yep, franke when I read that Natalie Portman had made a comment, I though, oh god, is she supporting Galliano now too?

Will never forget her supporting Polanski, no matter how many people gush over her. She still added her name.

thenightsky · 01/03/2011 21:47

They were saying in a news item I heard earlier, that Dior were looking for a reason to dump him as they consider him past it and a bit of a liability. Looks like he played right into their hands.

franke · 01/03/2011 21:52

I think whether they were looking for an excuse or not, his position was untenable after that film came to light. It was grim to watch. It was sad too - he seems a lonely, rather unstable character oozing self-loathing. I think Dior have done the right thing, but I do wonder what will happen to him now. It's a pretty spectacular fall.

lalalonglegs · 01/03/2011 22:13

I agree with franke (although why people would expect someone who thrives in the sycophantic and self-worshiping world of high fashion to hold normal views is baffling. It's just that they are usually abnormal in more acceptable ways.)

It's hard to imagine Galliano coming back from this but they do - Claude Montana was widely rumoured to have murdered his wife...

RamblingRosa · 02/03/2011 08:45

Good for Natalie Portman. And good for Dior for giving him the boot.

minieggfan · 02/03/2011 19:19

He is a depressive and an alcoholic. Not excusing what he said at all - but he wasn't just mouthing off in a bar. He was very drunk and obviously being egged on by the people filming him (who you can hear laughing).

Obviously anti semitism and racism are disgusting, but in my opinion alcoholics are ill and should not be goaded or encouraged to spout bile (or filmed actually). I don't believe these are his views when he is in his right mind.

It is a very sad fall from grace. A position like his in the fashion business is unbelievably pressured and lonely. If you are a vulnerable person in any way you will crumble.

maggiethecat · 02/03/2011 19:45

Do you have any good reason for thinking that these are not his views when able minded?

dawntigga · 02/03/2011 20:06

I've always disliked the little oik.

He will fail upwards however, he'll go away get 'well' (we shall never know exactly what was wrong with him). He'll do Oprah say 'Sorry' closely followed by a fashion show in aid of young Jewish/Asian designers with one leg who have been the victims of rants by idiots or some such Jewish/Asian group. He will then be hired by another house and be their head designer. Yes, there are a LOT of Jewish people in the media and in fashion but they are fully aware of how to make money. Galliano makes money and I hope they make a lot of money from him if this happens.

IMO he had it coming and it appears he's got form for anti-semitic remarks. What he said is disgusting.

He could very well be mentally unwell but from what I know about him (from people who have known him) I think he's probably just awful. If he is unwell then he's not in the right kind of job as the pressure is to much.

Quite, he seems to be heavily medicated, I wouldn't expect a functioning alcoholic to be quite so slurry.

Nonetheless what he said was truly despicable and he deserves to be sacked for holding those views and he should be held accountable (he is going to stand trial).

Wasn't just announced that he is designing Kate Moss's wedding dress?

minieggfan · 02/03/2011 22:41

I know those are not his views.

He is not a 'little oik'. He is actually a shy, vulnerable man - and he is an amazingly talented designer.

He has drink and drug problems. He was drunk and he said some horrible things, as drunk people do.

"IMO he had it coming" - what for exactly?

TragicallyHip · 02/03/2011 22:44

Is there a link so you can hear what he is saying?

expatinscotland · 02/03/2011 22:44

As a depressive who had more than my share of booze in my life, I can't imagine saying the things he did or things like that even entering my mind.

No excuse.

NONE at all.

He's a disgusting piece of work, I'm glad he's sacked and I hope he's found guilty of the charges brought against him by the French state.

Maybe he can move to the US or Oz and hang out with Mel Gibson.

expatinscotland · 02/03/2011 22:48

It's on YouTube, Tragically.

TragicallyHip · 02/03/2011 23:01

Thanks expat!

TragicallyHip · 02/03/2011 23:07

He looks and sounds fucked! Didn't sound like it but did he know the people he was speaking to?

sharbie · 02/03/2011 23:12

i don't know all the gory details but standing trial sounds a bit ott - perhaps there is a lot of jewish money etc tied up in the business/industry??

AnnieLobeseder · 02/03/2011 23:13
  1. I believe that you get the truth out of people when they're pissed. You want the true measure of a person, buy them a few pints.

  2. I'm Jewish.

He makes me sick. As did many of the comments I heard on the Jeremy Vine show discussing this today.
