Oh My. So what was 63/64 like?

expatinscotland · 18/10/2005 18:30

I'll believe it when I see it. They've been saying that for years.

suedonim · 18/10/2005 18:55

I remember it! MrsD, it began snowing on Boxing Day and I think we had lying snow until April. The sea also froze over in Kent. I remember walking to school with my wellies rubbing the insides of my legs red-raw. We had no CH (who did, in those days?) and mum would warm our clothes in the oven before we got dressed. Mum would get the washing in from the line and it was stiff as a board, she'd bend the sheets like pieces of cardboard!

Oh no. One of the only reasons I was happy to be returning to the UK is that we would be missing such a cold and miserable winter here in Chicago

edgetop · 18/10/2005 20:02

i would like to know how they know what the weather is going to be like, when they dont get it right from week to week. i suppose if they keep saying its going to be a bad winter chances are they will get it right one year.

BearintheBigBlueHouse · 18/10/2005 20:05

I've been saying this for weeks - the squirrles are working overtime to stockpile food. December and January are going to be freezing, get used to it.

BearintheBigBlueHouse · 18/10/2005 20:06

The squirrels are busy too

littlerach · 18/10/2005 20:07

That year the river Exe froze over which is very unusual as it's a salty river.

So freeezing cold and bird flu to look forward to. Great.

Gobbledispook · 18/10/2005 20:07

We hardly ever get snow - it's different on t'other side o'tPennines!

Hey, it might rain in Mancland but at least we don't get snowed in. Although....wouldn't mind it!

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 18/10/2005 20:09

im of the believe it when i see it.... would be good if it is..... i LOVE the snow, and Jess would have a GREAT time in the garden.... NOTE TO SELF - BUY JESS WELLIES!

BearintheBigBlueHouse · 18/10/2005 20:10

sod wellies, buy her skis

JanH · 18/10/2005 20:12

Oh yes I remember - I was 11 - there were not many cars then anyway and we had ice slides in the street that were yards and yards long.

Also ice inside bedroom windows - used to get dressed in front of the stove in the kitchen - and chilblains from sitting on top of the fire in the living room. Chaps on legs from both wellies and hems of lovely gaberdine macs. Earache.

But with central heating and double glazing we will be warm, if skint.

flutterbee · 18/10/2005 20:16

Woo Hoo !!! I hope it does get really cold and snowy I love the cold, everyone is always going on about the summer but not me I moan all summer and love the winter.

Wow what a good year it would be a freezing cold Xmas day with a brand new baby.

Ahhhh total bliss

Marina · 18/10/2005 20:21

My parents remember this so well as it was the winter my mum was pregnant with me. Apparently their pipes iced up for six weeks. They had just moved to an unheated, uninsulated house on the top of one of London's really STEEP hills (not many of those...) The bus my mum was coming home from work on got lost in a blizzard...on Blackheath
The squirrels have been insanely hacking at our lawn for weeks now as well. Just need to look for a good show of holly berries...

hewlettsdaughter · 18/10/2005 20:22

ooh, lots of berries on the holly tree in my garden!

Merlin · 18/10/2005 20:23

I noticed lots of berries on the holly round here the other day!

monstersmummy · 18/10/2005 20:25

we have no heating, no insulation, crappy draft proofing and are already having our fires on full blast but on the plus side, all the birds with bird flu will freeze when they get here

goes away thinking of a (free) way to keep the warm in and the cold out

FrenchSorciere · 18/10/2005 20:27

PMSL picturing you all spying on those poor squirrels (but they're all on coke anyway, so that's why they're manic!!) and couting berries on your holly trees

must go and do likewise now of course

pixel · 18/10/2005 20:32

There are masses of berries as well. Isn't that supposed to be a sign of a hard winter?

I'm a bit torn. I love the snow, it's just so pretty, and it's about time my 9 yo dd got a chance to make a snowman! On the other hand my pony is 28 now and I worry about him facing a long harsh winter.

A white Christmas would be nice!

dramaqueen72 · 18/10/2005 20:35

uh-oh! masses of berries on our holly....we actually commented on it last weekend........and ridculous amounts of squirrels dashing about too........ and we are smack bang in the middle of south coast!
hope my midwife can make it to my home birth, skis or wellies.
