Why do people mind so much that someone else is gay?

Why do people care so much about who other people are attracted to? So much that they'll beat them to death...

How on earth can you say something is unnatural when it has occurred in humans since human life began (as far as we know) and also occurs in many animal species.
If your definition of abnormal means 'not for procreating children' - then masturbation, sex with a woman using contraception, sex after the menopause and sex with anyone infertile is also 'abnormal'.
In humans (and in other species), sex is for pleasure.
Men do in general have different sex drives than women, so freed from the restraints of female influence gay men have historically been more promiscuous.
I do think however, equating walking in on men having sex with a man of 24 being beaten and kicked to death is pretty distasteful. They are hardly equivalent.
He could be any son of ours.

As to the original question, well, I think that yes, human beings are pack/social creatures and this tends to mean being very intolerant of difference. There is also, of course, the fact that the major world religions are fiercely homophobic.

aloha's posts (particularly the first one) say what I was feeling. Having sex in public is not very considerate, but not equivalent, in any way, to killing someone.

Heathcliffscathy · 18/10/2005 14:49

stunned that you should think it's ok to be homophobic bubble.

totally disagree that it's unnatural or wrong.

great post custardo.

Did I equate them, aloha? I expressed strong distaste for what my eight year old son and I witnessed in a public loo, and questioned why having sex in a public toilet is necessary now anyway. After my initial shock, I had strong words with them (not the same as a violent attack, I find it offensive that my reaction is being compared with the actions of those who murdered.)

Heathcliffscathy · 18/10/2005 14:53

also, couldn't it have been just as easily a hetero couple in the loos....they are inconsiderate and crap, but it's not cause they're gay is it?

Heathcliffscathy · 18/10/2005 14:56

also, don't agree that a 23 year old gay man has no experience of oppression: we obviously don't live in the same world....also someone has just been killed probably because they are gay, so how can you argue that that oppression doesn't exist anymore

also, why would how someone became or was born gay affect whether you liked them or chose to socialise with them????

staggered.

Heterosexual couple would be shocking but understandable for an 8 year old to witness.Mummy and daddy = baby etc.etc. I'm sorry soph, but you and I are not going to see eye to eye at all on this one.

Heathcliffscathy · 18/10/2005 15:14

i know we aren't. but to my mind 8 year old would be just as shocked or unshocked by either, depending on how much saw and how handled by accompanying adult.

best stop now i agree.
