Seriously angered me. SMP has inferred Rape victim must have been a prostitute (with subtle hint that it would therefore be her own fault)

This need to be in "News" it's certainly a Feminist issue but it needs a wider audience.

The man is as dangerous as any rapist.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 14/02/2011 08:36

Sod it I just decided to be late. Have sent something off. Thanks for posting the contact details dittany.

The sad thing is, I'm not even surprised about these kind of comments any more :( Angry

SlightlyTubbyHali · 14/02/2011 08:41

What an utter arse.

Have just phoned to make a complaint - they are going to get back to be - absolutely appalled this man is involved in legislation

SlightlyTubbyHali · 14/02/2011 12:58

He was a JUDGE?

I'm pretty shocked that anyone who has worked in the legal system and is now in a position of authority would think it acceptable to give a statement that might potentially harm an ongoing investigation/prejudice any trial. Twit.

suzikettles · 14/02/2011 13:00

These lanes are entered and exited from busy, major streets. They are poorly lit, full of recessed doorways, parked vehicles, skips - it would be (is) extremely easy for a woman to be dragged into a lane, raped and I doubt all the screaming in the world would make a difference given that the likelihood of anyone stopping is virtually nil.

The men that are carrying out these attacks (and of course the many, many men who regularly attack, maim, kill prostitutes in Glasgow city centre) need to be stopped, but something needs to be done about the lanes too.

Songbird · 14/02/2011 13:03

Yes, 'hookers' are clearly begging for it aren't they? Hmm Angry

Webchat with Alex Salmond tomorrow, 1-2pm. Might be worth raising.

KaraStarbuckThrace · 14/02/2011 13:08

Jeez, is he channelling the ghost of Judge Pickles, perchance??

What an absolute prick.

Blessings3 · 14/02/2011 14:36

Have had a call back - have been told the remarks have been taken out of context as relating to a specific case when they were more general discussion of the way that rapes can happen and their general investigation. Apparently this sister newspaper has not re run this story as the whole transcript has been reviewd

SardineQueen · 14/02/2011 14:57

Whether he was talking about a specific case or about rape in general, his comment are unacceptable.

I can't imagine what possible context could change the gist of his remarks that women often report consensual sex as rape as they are scared their boyfriends will find out Angry

BlardyKnackered · 14/02/2011 16:07

wow.

nothing to add but wow.

yogididabooboo · 14/02/2011 16:37

I am astounded that this hasn't been picked up by a national.
i don't buy the "out of context" line.

he has said that questions need to be asked as to why the woman was there.

why does it mater what she was doing there?

the more he squirms the more angry he makes me.

OP posts:
AliceWorld · 14/02/2011 17:26

They'll be providing us with the transcript then presumably, as the comments were out of context and they stand by them?

LessNarkyPuffin · 14/02/2011 17:36

This is why the conviction rate is so low. So few cases are reported and only the strongest of those get near a courtroom. Then they come up against attitudes like this.

It's not an uncommon view at all, or restricted to men. The fact that someone in his position thinks it's perfectly ok to express to a journalist is depressing though.

yogididabooboo · 14/02/2011 19:19

the thing is that mpst women will (sadly) state that the only time they wuold report a rape is if they are dragged kicking and screaming in a street and raped by a stranger.

just as this woman had done to her.

Now we hear that actually even those circumstances do not place you above vile accusations and denials.

I sincerely hope they are pressed to release the transcripts, i am very keen to see how on earth they feel his comments can be explained away.

Unwind · 14/02/2011 20:55

Shock that there has not been a stir about this

do the media not think it a disgrace?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 14/02/2011 21:57

i know unwind - maybe some will pick it up tomorrow?

huddspur · 14/02/2011 22:49

There hasn't been a media storm because its a MSP and frankly no-one in England cares about the Scottish Parliament.

Unwind · 14/02/2011 22:52

He is still a fairly prominent Tory politician, a convenor of the Scottish Parliament?s justice committee, and a former judge

sakura · 15/02/2011 06:48

no this is what the regime does. It does not surprise me a jot that this isn't being reported. He'll probably get promoted.

BarbarianMum · 15/02/2011 12:09

Well I'd be fascinated to here the "context" in which such remarks are acceptable. But I'm actually pretty sad that I'm not surprised by them, esp. because he is a judge. Sad Angry

I don't know about going back to the 70s - did we ever really leave them?

StuffingGoldBrass · 15/02/2011 12:14

What a complete shitbag this man is. Reminds me of the vile police officer who commented on the Yorkshire Ripper case that the police were starting to act on it 'now that decent women are being killed' ie it was all right if he only killed sex workers.

Munaka · 15/02/2011 12:36

I have linked this thread to the webchat

Angry
crapbarry · 15/02/2011 13:26

I've asked a question about it on the webchat munaka - but if anyone else can come up with more coherent questions, please post them - would be good to hear mr salmond's view on this.
