Petition is here if you are against the Government selling off large areas of England's forests to private developers, who may turn them into Centerparcs type resorts or golf courses.

PETITION

If you want to know which are up for sale, there is a map here MAP

also posted a link on this - This is going to cost us money not save us money - and that's according to government stats! Without factoring in all the grants people will claim to replant all the trees they cut down!
This is not about cost cutting or saving the UK money. It's about privatisation of our land to make money for a few rich investors.

OMG. Damian Green, Govt minister, on Question Time last night!! Did anyone see it? The campaigners against the sell off of the Forests could not have wished for a better advertisement for their cause. He obviously does not believe in it!! He had no argument for the sell off whatsoever, and could not deny that IT WILL MAKE NO MONEY. It may even make a loss.....

Ideological madness once again. This Government stinks

Bump

Petition is here: www.38degrees.org.uk/page/s/save-our-forests

Just posted this on the thread in politics, but the DEFRA map used for the supposed consultation is very odd. They have classified the forest of bere near me as 'small commercial' meaning that it would be one of the ones sold/leased first and going straight to the companies/wealthy individuals with no chance of a local community getting it even if they could stump up the cash. But I fail to see how it is 'small commercial' as it has 2 great adventure playgrounds, toilets, picnic sites, 3 car parks and BBQs!

Mercibucket, I wrote this on another forests thread, but I've copied it here because I agree with you and feel very guilty.

Took my son + 9 friends to a paintball party in Scotland at the weekend.

The woman who runs the centre told me that when they started up they were only allowed one small unobtrusive hut. A couple of years later three more buildings had sprung up. Now they have got permission to build a castle and a Vietcong(?) type area in order to upgrade their facilities. In the middle of a small forest.

It suddenly dawned on me that the selling-off of the forests has been going on for years (it takes me a while to catch on). And it's happening because people like me take their kids paintballing.

I try to make myself feel better about it by classing paintballing along with sports like skiing or golf that also colonise huge areas of our beautiful landscape, and I do sincerely like to see people out in the countryside doing active things rather than sitting in front of their computers or Wiiing in the front room.

But - by building that Paintball Centre, and the large campsite nearby, and the GoKarting place down the road and the Sphere (?) thing that's just starting up, they are wrecking our wildernesses. If the forests really were wild, people could still run round excitedly firing paint at each other, and it would be much scarier and a fraction of the price. The whole thing cost me over £300 (mainly because of all the added extras that you don't realise you are going to have to pay for when you get there, in order to join in).

So who benefits? My son and his friends did this time. But their children and grandchildren won't be so lucky. I can't see that the locals get much out of it. The odd B&B, maybe, but that surely doesn't compensate them for the increased traffic on the roads and the loss of their lovely forest. The real winners are, and always will be, the huge nationwide company that runs these places.

Feel very about it, and won't go again

Mellowfruitfulness · 17/02/2011 13:35

Caroline Spelman has backed down; D Cameron has no faith in the policy of selling off forests. Is this a victory? Or are they simply regrouping in order to attack again?

I often wonder why more ministers don't apologise and say they were wrong when they make a mistake. I'm inclined to respect CS for doing so, but wonder if she's become a bit of a scapegoat.

well
done everyone!

There is still massive budget cuts (60%) and 25% job losses but that's no different to anywhere else and we still have the woods!

Mellowfruitfulness · 17/02/2011 22:18

H'mm. They might just be regrouping. A strategic retreat. Just heard that Cameron has appointed a new director of communication. Doesn't like the reactions to his policies and wants to spin them better.

I'd stop twirling, Woollyjo. Oh go on then, just a little one.Smile

woollyjo · 17/02/2011 22:52

I know, but I was really worried they would manage it this time as so much is being cut and its hard to justify a wood over health care.

Just keep an eye on your local country park, alot of them are council owned and we all know the squeeze councils are getting right now.
