I felt very shocked when I saw it and quite upset to be honest. I really hope she has learnt from her, well I am loathe to say mistake as she did it on purpose, bad decision.

was your baby OK IAmReallyFabNow?

headfairy · 14/01/2011 13:29

What do you mean IamReallyFabNow? Did she do an ECV on you? Without your permission? That's shocking!

Eglu · 14/01/2011 13:30

Was it VH? I've seen her on tv a lot. What happened to you sounds awful.

IAmReallyFabNow · 14/01/2011 13:53

We arranged for her to come and visit me fairly late on in the pregnancy. She did turn my baby without saying that she was going to do. My NHS midwife was horrified. When I gave birth to my baby a few weeks later he was in distress and my c-section scar nearly ruptured. If that had happened in my lounge it is possible we both wouldn't be here now as both our lives were in danger in labour. He is now fine but I can't have any more babies.

I know I am being stupid but it has just brought it all back to me and I really hope she has learnt her lesson.

[worries]

IamReallyFabNOw, I've pm'd you.

IAmReallyFabNow · 14/01/2011 14:02

And I have replied.

OP posts:
Plumm · 14/01/2011 14:20

why was she on the news?

Sorry for what happened to you. I may need an ECV (will know next week) but DH and I are probably going to refuse it.

IAmReallyFabNow · 14/01/2011 14:23

Talking about the breast feeding to 6 months and whether it is the best thing to do.

My advice is not to have it unless they tell you exactly what it will feel like, how you might feel afterwards and that you are in hospital. Have you had a section before?

OP posts:
Plumm · 14/01/2011 14:39

No section before. My first pg was breech until quite late but turned herself so hoping this one will do the same. I've just got a funny feeling about ECV and would rather have a planned section than an ECV which could go wrong (I'll be back next week for advice if I'm told I need one).

I'm glad she was only talking about bf - I thought she'd done something horribly wrong!

OonaghBhuna · 14/01/2011 14:50

I would get proper medical advice re: ECV.
Glad you and baby are ok IARFN.

allgonebellyup · 14/01/2011 15:08

Turned your baby into what?

ISNT · 14/01/2011 15:18

What's ECV?

headfairy · 14/01/2011 15:30

Plumm, I attempted an ECV, it wasn't pretty. I was on gas and air and begged them to stop. I did have a chest infection at the time and ds was stuck under my ribs, but I would definitely turn it down again. Was horrible. I'm sure there are plenty who've had better experiences than me though.

IAmReallyFabNow · 14/01/2011 16:24

Having had both the ECV and an emergency section if the baby was perfectly fine in both cases I would go for the ECV. The effects of that for me were over in a day or so. The effects of the section took years and stopped me having as many children as we wanted.

OP posts:
headfairy · 14/01/2011 16:32

See I knew there would be someone who had a better experience than me (or to put it better, appreciated the ECV more) I think because mine failed, the fact that it was agony made it much worse. I went through all that and still ended up with a section.

VivaLeBeaver · 14/01/2011 16:47

Is the person who I believe is no longer a midwife but some sort of independent "baby guru" stroke breast feeding person. Not SWMNBN but THINK HER FIRST NAME BEGINS WITH c.

IAmReallyFabNow · 14/01/2011 16:48

Not the one I am talking about VLB.

1234ThumbScrew · 14/01/2011 16:51

I also had a bad experience with an independent MW although not the same thing. I do wish people wouldn't assume they are all brilliant, whilst I'm sure the majority are fab just because a MW is working independently doesn't mean she some SuperMW.

Hope it hasn't upset you too much. Did you make any complaint?

IAmReallyFabNow · 14/01/2011 17:00

Yes, I did. I told my NHS midwife. She knew her and said she would be spoken to.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 14/01/2011 17:12

Sorry I think I'm being dim here.
I thought you said she made a bad decision and your DS's distress led to your CS scar nearly rupturing.
Then you said you'd rather have the ECV than a CS.
< confused >

nickelbabysnatcher · 14/01/2011 17:16

she'd previously had a CS.

IAmReallyFabNow · 14/01/2011 17:48

My son was born naturally but my scar was from a previous section.

OP posts:
IAmReallyFabNow · 14/01/2011 17:48

And she did the turning weeks before dc was born.

i remember hearing a programme on radio 2 about independent midwives and it scared the shite out of me. a women was telling a horror story of her birth which resulted in severe injuries to her baby. independent midwives do not need have any professional indemnity insurance. the woman went to sue the midwife and discovered that she had no insurance and no assets. also there is not much in the way of regulation. i personally would not take my chances.

lou4791 · 14/01/2011 21:00

I'm sorry if the OP had a bad experience, but it's difficult to tell exactly what happened and why, and obviously only one side of the story here. Most IM are brilliant, and I think most ladies who have been cared for by the midwife on the BBC today would be very happy with their care- she has a really good reputation. Indemnity insurance is difficult for IMs to get which should be explained to any potential clients beforehand. IMs are governed by the NMC just as NHS midwives are.
