Why would it matter if or how much australia gave to Pakistan?

Astrophe · 12/01/2011 11:29

bumping. :( This is looking like its going to get so, so bad. 70 missing.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 12/01/2011 11:33

not that it actually matters but

\link{http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/national/australia-increases-pakistan-flood-aid-by-24-million/story-e6frf7l6-1225906182562\the Govermment figures}

and a quick google reveals plenty of Australian charities running appeals for it too.

(that's £22 million converted into £££'s).

\link{http://www.redcross.org.au/Pakistan_floods_2010.htm\the Austrlian Red Cross appeal} alone raised $6.9 million from the public. (that's about £4.3million)

Happy now - are they deserving of our support as they've supported others??

(oh and they had appeals for Haiti and Katrini if that helps??) Hmm

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 12/01/2011 11:41

To put what Eidsvold (I thin it was further up who mentioned driving times between places on the map she linked to) it into more perspective -

The UK has an approx area of 244820 km²

The area that is affected by flooding in Australis is approx 850000 sq km

cjdamoo · 12/01/2011 11:41

Maz what a stupid thing to say..

My 8 year old donated his piggy bank savings $14 dollars after posting this on a music website Im pleased to say a number of the music website users have offered to match his donation.

LetThereBeRock · 12/01/2011 11:49

What a wonderful ds you have,Cjdamoo. It's incredible that he's so thoughtful at such a young age.

cjdamoo · 12/01/2011 11:51

Shame the other 2 old enough to get pocket money spend it on lollies before it burns a hole in there pockets :o He is a sweetie

eidsvold · 12/01/2011 12:47

mazfah - not only do aussie put their hands in their pockets all the time for countries in our area - we also donate people on the ground to help support. My SIL is one who has been flown to areas outside of Aus to help with rescuing people.

thumbwitch · 12/01/2011 13:46

how lovely of mazfah to comment. Hmm

cjdamoo - what a sweetheart your DS is! :)
Mine is too young to know what's going on really, and he doesnt' know it yet but he's going to be donating some of his toys to the Salvos for the children who have lost everything in the floods.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 12/01/2011 14:10

I told the DS's what was happening this morning.

I have to be honest I don't think either of them will offer to give up any of their pocket money - the end of this month will be the first time in their entire lives they've ever had any pocket money - and it's a much looked forward to event......I don't think even thoughtful compassionate DS2 will be able to bring himself to give up the first money he'll ever have had to himself Grin

LetThereBeRock · 12/01/2011 14:48

Would you care to explain that rather crass comment,Mazfah?

nancy75 · 12/01/2011 19:19

all of my dh's family live in Brisbane, we can't get hold of a few of them at the moment. I have suggested to DD's school today that they do a fundraiser - I think we are goint to have an own clothes day.

Nice comment mazfah Hmm

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 12/01/2011 22:31

Bump.

How you getting on Eids?

eidsvold · 12/01/2011 22:47

i am fine - about 30 minutes drive on top of a hill outside brisbane central area.

MummyElk · 13/01/2011 08:25

hi guys
my cousin is stranded just outside toowoomba - is a video a neighbour made of their flooding...
both their neighbours lost their lives, luckily the children were saved, but the houses are completely gone...
I feel VERY helpless - i've donated to the appeal but i want to help HER....Sad

differentnameforthis · 13/01/2011 08:50

Also, NO had the likes of Bono & Brad Pitt racing to their aid. Making singles, helping physically, donating!

That Holmes guy who does the TV renos giving time to help.

NOT ONE has come forward to offer help to the stranded Australian's who have lost a lifetimes worth of belongings. Many uninsured due to floods of 1974!

My friend watched as her house went under. Lost her whole life in that house. She was allowed to go back in today. She says that it looks likes someone threw all her stuff in a huge washing machine, added a load of mud & then emptied it out. NOTHING she owns is salvageable!

differentnameforthis · 13/01/2011 08:56

Not even her house!

eidsvold · 13/01/2011 09:05

that is it different - so many are in the same boat.

Some people do not even have a house - houses were washed down in the inland tsunami - washed off stumps and down the way.

OP posts:
differentnameforthis · 13/01/2011 09:07

Agreed Eids, my friend's house is still standing, but it is wood structure & will not be habitable again. So it has to come down.

eidsvold · 13/01/2011 09:09

different - there is a 10yo lad who was saved by folk who were trying to save his 13yo and his mother as well. The 13yo told the rescuers to take his 10yo brother first as he could not swim, then to take his mother - by the time they got the 10yo to safety - the mother and 13yo were gone.

IT is hard to comprehend that whole communities are gone. Just washed away - totally gone.

differentnameforthis · 13/01/2011 09:19

I saw that, Eids...and it is heartbreaking. I saw the interview with the guy who rescued him. How awful that he has to live with knowing he couldn't get them all. Not his fault, but it must haunt him.

(am sandcastles, btw)

eidsvold · 13/01/2011 09:30

oh different I could not watch the interview

OP posts:
differentnameforthis · 13/01/2011 09:45

I didn't realise it was him for a while, I had Sky news on in the back ground, catching updates & caught the tail end. Very sad.

thumbwitch · 13/01/2011 09:49

I couldn't watch it either. It has cropped up on my FB page too but I can't even read about it - heartbreaking for all concerned.

Lance Armstrong has come on board for fundraising; Rosie's music school in Newcastle is making a fund-raising CD to sell for the flood victims - they're the only things I've heard about happening outside of the main charities. I'm off to Coles tomnorrow to give my donation.

Vix7 · 13/01/2011 18:41

i studied in Brisbane and watching/reading the news, i want to cry! it's too surreal seeing pics of familiar roads/buildings surrounded by water.

a brisbane icon has gone under - Oxley's on the river. I used to drive by all the time.
Oxley's/Drift owner speaks

thankfully my friends there are safe and dry.
