I think that no matter how much you earn, if the tax system reached the point where it takes a higher percentage of someone's income than they are permitted to keep for themselves then something very very wrong and sinister will have happened.

Chil1234 · 23/10/2010 11:50

"tax his club"

By the look of things, Man U won't be taxed so much as sold soon. They're up to their bollocks in debt which makes the Rooney deal look like an exercise in desperation. I could do without the hypocrisy. All that gush about 'loving the club' is so transparently bogus, it's insulting. Mind you, Rooney's definition of 'love' is suspect at best....

SpookilyDoodleydoohoohoooooo · 23/10/2010 12:19

Agree with that Chil - slightly snorting at the difference between my definition of love and Rooneys!

Isn't it disgusting?
How can they pay someone that kind of money to kick a ball around?
And he didn't even score ONE goal at the Worldcup - he was totally useless!!!!!
aaaaaaaaaargh

Chil1234 · 23/10/2010 13:39

I don't have a problem with the amount of money. Saying he just 'kicks a ball around' is like saying George Clooney just 'does a bit of acting'.... producers know that Clooney guarantees big box-office & the Man U owners know that Rooney means bums on seats and silverware in the cabinet. Ticket sales, sponsorhip, merchandise, TV-deals etc. It's big business.

If he stops scoring goals or if he does himself some nasty injury, of course, it's all over very quickly. Enjoy the cash Wayne but drop all the rubbish about being loyal to the club... you're fooling no-one!

mayorquimby · 23/10/2010 14:11

"how can poeple tell ?(I've never watched football). I reckon there's hundreds of young men (and why isnt women's football paid like this?) who could kick a ball as well as him."

Sorry but that's just a ridiculous thing to say. What do you mean how do they know? they know how good he is at football the same way people who are involved in anything know if someone is good or not. They watch him play and assess his skills and ability against his peers. And there certainly aren't 100's of people who can do what he does. He earns so much because he is in the top percentile in his profession which in itself is already an elite group. If there were hundreds of similar ability then he wouldn't be paid so much.
Also it;s quite clear why women don't get the same pay because they don't generate as much revenue or interest.

NoahAndTheWhale · 23/10/2010 14:33

I am also wondering whether Manchester United can actually afford it. If they are on the verge of bankruptcy, I'm a little concerned about their ability to pay.

Chil1234 · 23/10/2010 14:39

They can't afford it. But if they have Rooney on their books, they'll be able to sell the club for a lot more than if they don't. Footballers are just capital assets at the end of the day...

don't understand that argument either. What does the current climate have to do with his personal negotiations. He's a private employee. If he had accepted 90 grand a week that doesn't mean that united would have given the extra 60 he's now getting to people who need it more or to charity. It's just that the company would have kept the money instead.
The countries finances have fuck all to do with him and are completely irrelevant to how he negotiates his private contract with another independent party.

Great - he pays tax so being a greedy grasping little prick is okay then is it?
I have just left my Nan in hospital where the nurses were run ragged because there are not enough of them and this bloody twat who is already overpaid is asking for more.

Wrong wrong wrong - paying tax or not.

baildonwen · 23/10/2010 18:04

What has Wayne Rooney got to do with the number of nurses in the hospital that your gran is in?

Panzee · 23/10/2010 18:38

Apparently Man United give any excess money at the end of the year to pay for nurses. Or something. :)

mayorquimby · 23/10/2010 19:14

I know. The fucking cheek of that working class piece of scum working hard and using his talent to better his life and make a success of himself.
Also had to laugh at the post of "dh wonders why bother getting an education", yes because there was a point in his life when he had the straight choice of "you can have an education or you can be one of the most talented sportsmen in the world" and he decided that he'd rather stick to education as it had better career prospects.

huddspur · 23/10/2010 19:51

The politics of envy are out again, Rooney gets paid what he does because he's one of the top 10 strikers in the world. I f you were in the top 10 of your profession globally then you would expect to be well paid.
Should we not be praising people from poor backgrounds who work their way up. What would you rather he be doing living on benefits?

legostuckinmyhoover · 23/10/2010 20:00

nothing to do with envy.

How absurd to think people would rather he was dependant on benefits-has someone said that?

Georgimama · 23/10/2010 20:03

I think the point is that from his background the alternative career paths if he hadn't happened to be a star footballer would have been pretty limited.

So from the above we've established that it's OK to be successful, just not too successful.

huddspur · 23/10/2010 20:04

No its just people are slating him for being greedy etc. Who wouldn't seek to maximise their talent and try and maximise their earnings. Plus people saying its only kicking a football around, well millions of people around the world are interested in watching him kick a football around and it is an obvious talent.

legostuckinmyhoover · 23/10/2010 20:08

really? i think its great he has been such a success. good for him. if ManU want to pay him vast amounts of money then good for them.

but his earnings are proof [as are other peoples-famous or not] that the tax system is not fair and the country should slip in another tax band. thats all. simple. he is still loaded. ManU get lots of cash for having him play and "the pot" gets a little more in it.

Georgimama · 23/10/2010 20:12

The tax system is fair and taxing people in such a way that the State gets more of their earnings than they do as you propose, even if they were to waltz home with a trillion pounds after tax, is wicked. Truly wicked.

I accept I have to pay my dues, but the money I earn is mine - it's all mine and I accept I have to pay some in taxes. It's not the State's money for them to determine how much would be "fair" for me to have.
