I have been thinking about them too. I even did a google about them but nothing came up. Channel 4 were highlighting their plight, poor people.

DooinMeCleanin · 13/10/2010 12:55

Updates/appeals here I think.

DieDieDieARGGHHHRod · 13/10/2010 12:56

They've been held for a year now.

Hulababy · 13/10/2010 12:56

According to \link{http://www.savethechandlers.com/\this} they are still being held captive, some 356 days :(

TwoIfBySea · 13/10/2010 13:04

It is bizarre how the pirates seem to be allowed to rule that part of the world. I only realised recently that George Adamson (of Elsa Born Free fame) was shot dead by Somalians. Not exactly a trustworthy lot then.

Oh god they've both lost alot weight especially the lady. How awful and sad i wonder what is being done to get them release the media are definitely not playing much of a part.

mamadiva · 13/10/2010 13:11

I was thinking fo them a few days ago and nothing seems to be happening! :(

I don't understand why the government seem to bargain for some if it suits them but just leave others to suffer?!

I can't begin to imagine how much they and their family are hurting.

two- I think you may have worded that a bit Hmm, many people are murdered in Britan every week, does'nt mean we are all bad does it?

TwoIfBySea · 13/10/2010 13:17

They're pirates Stewie, I think they can handle a bit of sweeping.

mamadiva · 13/10/2010 13:20

All Somalians are pirates? Hmm

TwoIfBySea · 13/10/2010 13:24

No all Somalian pirates are pirates. Its not all Johnny Depp you know.

MollieO · 13/10/2010 13:27

There are currently over 380 seamen and 18 ships detained by Somali pirates.

mamadiva · 13/10/2010 13:30

Oh sorry I thought you meant all Somalians were pirates Blush

Although would'nt mind coming across a boat full of Johnny Depps... :o

Mollie that is a scary fact :(, how do they get away with it?

TwoIfBySea · 13/10/2010 13:32

No worries mamadiva, I did miss the word out. Adamson was murdered by Somalian pirates though who were trying to grab the land he had his reserve on. It just sounds weird saying pirates when it is land based.

PaisleyPumpkin · 13/10/2010 13:44

A lot of the pirates were fishermen before foreign ships illegally trawled their fish supplies and dumped toxic waste in their waters.
I think food aid was cut to Somalia earlier this year too. They're desperate people, some of them.

(and I'd thought you said all Somalians were untrustworthy)

MrsGhoulOfGhostbourne · 13/10/2010 18:08

If I were a Somalian I might well be a pirate - these peopel are desperate - we simply cannot relate to the poverty in Somalia. So, hardly suprising that they will turn to any opportunity that presents itself. If people are stupid enogugh to go yachitng there they only have themselves to blame. The rellies could have had a whip round and raised the ransome (indeed, how about teh couple selling their own house, cashing in theri pensions - no, thought not...)they prefer to bleat to the taxpayers and leave the couple in captivity.

complimentary · 13/10/2010 18:35

Desperate or not you don't murder people. Many people are poor and desperate but they don't resort to kidnap and murder.
These people are out and out criminials, stop making excuses for these thugs/pirates, These are hardly Johnny Depp are they? These pirates would cut your throat, as soon as look at you! No they are not a trustworthy lot! I've said it! I'm sure you PC ladies on this thread would be pooing yourself, if heaven forbid you were captured by them.

Alouiseg · 13/10/2010 18:39

The Pirates have asked for a serious amount of money, they would have garnered more sympathy asking for a more reasonable amount. If they wanted to buy some land and crops and animals I think they might have had more luck.

fuschiagroan · 13/10/2010 18:43

They don't use it to support their families or anything of the sort, they buy boats, guns and drugs. The name of the pirate group is 'Al-Shabab' which means 'The Lads' in Arabic. I don't know why we don't just send in a gunboat (not when they actually have hostages on board). If bigger nations started making a stand then these pirates might realise that if they continue behaving like this they may be liable to being blown up. As it is we do nothing, so they just keep on. There is no deterrent.

Also, apparently the yachters were well away from the usually dodgy area when they were captured.

scaryteacher · 13/10/2010 19:31

Fuschia - the EU and NATO have warships out there. Unfortunately the situation is not as simple as blowing the pirates out of the water; you have to consider religious tensions, and also that if you look at it, if they were all murdering bastards all the hostages would be dead. They aren't.

You need to follow the ransom money and see where that goes to find out what is really happening here.

As long as the companies and insurance agents such as Lloyds keep paying the ransoms, this will keep happening.

Also, consider, if you capture a pirate, where do you try them? If in the UK, then will they claim asylum at the end and then stay here. Do we want that? How many would then sit there waiting to be captured? The EU would not let us deport them. Do you not think that this has all been thought through at a much higher level than MN?

The Chandlers put themselves in danger, and they had been warned not to sail the route they did. Whilst I am sorry for them, I would have taken the advice and sailed elsewhere.

Alouiseg · 13/10/2010 19:34

Fucking "Religious Tensions". Same old same old.

They're just terrorists and kidnappers let's stop romanticising them. Why shouldnt people be able to sail where they want.

scaryteacher · 13/10/2010 22:22

It is not 'same old' Al-Shabab is aligned with Al'Quaeda, and are fundamentalists. Somalia is a failed state and will continue to b so for along time as no-one can prevail against the factions or unite them at the moment.

I am not romanticising them, but there are legal, political and military ramifications that have to be considered.

People cannot just 'sail where they want to'. Let's allow the Russians to park a ruddy great submarine inside territorial waters and watch what our RN do, as you would let them 'sail where they want to'.

Some areas are not safe to sail in; piracy is not confined to Somalia by any means, parts of the Caribbean are unsafe, as are parts of the South China seas. If people are irresponsible enough to sail in these places, having been specifically advised not to do so, then that is on their heads. They also then involve others who have to risk their necks attempting to rescue them.

Alouiseg · 14/10/2010 07:28

Let me rephrase that, fucking Al Quaeda. Not content with terrorising the land they are terrorising the seas.

It appears we can't do anything these days without Al Quaeda rearing their ugly head.
