This is so typical of the Guardian!

They are changing format on Monday (sent me an email because I am such a prolific linker, lol) but not to tabloid - presumably that would be common!

OP posts:
hoxtonchick · 12/09/2005 20:59

agree with ericblack re easier to read when breastfeeding, thoug haven't actually read the news yet...

Ericblack · 12/09/2005 21:05

I forced myself to read the news first but it's backfired as I've still to read the magaziney bit.

hoxtonchick · 12/09/2005 21:09

have just skimmed the headlines....

Ericblack · 12/09/2005 21:12

That's what I should do but I always feel guilty and start reading the article and then get bored and then read with only my eyes and not my brain. I'm too old to feel guilty about not reading important stuff. How ridiculous!

muminlondon · 13/09/2005 16:23

did you notice that they used to leave sentences dangling from front page to continuation of the story inside, but don't do that any more? It changes the emphasis or urgency of a front page story I think.

Like it though, it makes me feel very European.

spacedonkey · 13/09/2005 16:25

I like the new format too. The TV listings are much improved. Not sure about the new masthead style - I remember being wowed by the last redesign, but this one looks a bit amateur-website-designer-with-pretensions-y

gothicmama · 13/09/2005 16:26

Is Wednesday still the social care day

spacedonkey · 13/09/2005 16:26

assume so, yesterday was Media as usual

PiccadillyCircus · 13/09/2005 16:27

DH complained yesterday about the change in format. He said he almost complained to the newsagent.

gothicmama · 13/09/2005 16:27

Thank you

Wordsmith · 13/09/2005 16:30

I'm still in 2 minds about it, but haven't had a lot of time to peruse it yet. However, as I only really get to read it in bed, I can report that it's a lot easier to read when you're lying on your side than the old one.

My newspagent isn't impressed. He was even less impressed when I told him the sat edition will apparently have 9 inserts - most of which he will have to 'stuff' himself.

Why can't we have a serious paper in one section, instead of 3 or 4?

muminlondon · 13/09/2005 16:38

I'd like to know the economics of it. Less paper (unless it's longer) but now 4-colour and more stapling. But maybe higher display ad rates because the space is now in colour? more recruitment ad space to sell because the media, education and public service bits are larger than they were?

nikkie · 13/09/2005 21:29

not impressed at mons G2 but I don't always like Mons anyway- haven't read todays is it the same as befor?

hatstand · 15/09/2005 11:46

muminlondon - I noticed that and think it is an enormuos improvement. It used to really piss me off. Overall I think the whole change is great - my only criticism is that there are now, effectively 4 bits - too much for a weekly. bin the sport, that's what I say

JoolsToo · 15/09/2005 11:51

I prefer the Telegraph mesen - oh what a surprise!

what's the DVD in the Times then?

moretolife · 15/09/2005 15:14

where do you all get the time to read the paper, that's what i'd like to do, because i'm obviously doing something wrong. i get the Guardian on saturday and it takes me most of the week to read it! never mind getting it during the week as well!
whats your secret? and no i'm not on MN now, before you say it, i'm actually doing some work on the computer & i'm just taking a 5minute teabreak!!!

Lio · 15/09/2005 15:20

Stop press, terrible news: the Saturday Guardian is binning the Biff strip. I love Biff and have gone into haridan mode to [email protected] where you can email them any thoughts on the new and improved (ha! Except for ditching Biff) Guardian.

They also tried to bin Doonesbury (which I have to admit I don't 'get') and due to public outrage it has been brought back.

Anyway, time to stop in case everyone else gets it for the news...

mommie · 15/09/2005 17:04

still prefer the telegraph.

Posey · 15/09/2005 19:17

We have had the Guardian in our house forever but i must admit I rarely read the news bit. Arms too short so spread it on the floor where either cat sits on/under it or ds rolls his cars/trains over/under it or dd draws glasses/spots/moustaches all over all photos.

I love the Berliner and have read it all week. Not sure I like G2 as much although I think it may just take some getting used to as I find my way around.

The real proof of success though is fil who hates any change, ever. He went as far as admitting he thought it was good. Must be brilliant

AnnieSG · 16/09/2005 19:47

I'm one of those tribal Guardian readers in that I probably wouldn't change whatever happened...but I'm struggling with the new version. I like the size and look, but wish they hadn't fiddled quite so much with content. Miss the old G2 and really hated that pretentious thing yesterday where they got the art critic to 'deconstruct' an image of a bombed out building in Iraq. I almost combusted at how up its bum it was!!!! Yeuchhhh. And I feel a bit bombarded by all the short bits....

Posey · 16/09/2005 21:00

Annie - totally agree with your opninion of yesterday's G2 thing. Total and utter c**p

snafwitch · 16/09/2005 21:22

Oh god, totally with you on that, annie - 'The boy's blue t-shirt against the rubble reminds me of lapis lazuli' or some such pretentious toss...aaaargh!

AnnieSG · 19/09/2005 09:49

Must add though, that I really liked the new Saturday edition....

anoushka · 19/09/2005 12:33

hi i must disagree it has cut out all the regulat things in the travel section like the hotel reviue i think it's called some were to go for the weekend and they cut the mom talking about her travels with the kids it great because i moan too about how unfriendly most places are for kids like museums and l love the last minute deals if you had two hundred pounds you could go to greese for the night so i was very suprised and i hope it's not all cut or i will not get it again

puddle · 19/09/2005 12:42

Ok one week in and I'm struggling to like it. I think it looks fantastic but seems to be thinner on content to me. I don't like the in brief approach to the front page either, then having to look for the rest of the story inside. G2 has nothing in it as far as I can see. I too am 'tribal' Guardian but this is testing my loyalty.
