This is so typical of the Guardian!

They are changing format on Monday (sent me an email because I am such a prolific linker, lol) but not to tabloid - presumably that would be common!

Today's main section has "The END" in the Guardian headline font on the back on the back page - I will try to keep this one (we still have the 1/1/2000 edition somewhere). It also includes a sample of the Berliner size and it is very neat, I have to say, although it's a single sheet, what it will be like on a busy day with 10 sheets or more is another matter

(Half the sections absent though, despite the plastic bag - too busy perhaps - Sport is there of course, priorities )

There's also a lulu for Monday's corrections column - "Jane Austin" in a header on the Letters page

how have i missed this? new g2 mag sounds good.

noddyholder · 10/09/2005 10:41

free copy of My Life as a Dog in todays Independent Sadly feel the new size Guardian will probably woo me too for a while anyway!

marthamoo · 10/09/2005 11:48

I'm so glad it's going to be smaller. I do find broadsheets a pain to read. I don't know why they don't all go Berliner or tabloid or whatever - have never understood why being printed on bigger sheets of paper makes a newspaper more prestigious to read. The Sun in broadsheet form would still be The Sun.

(and I like paper too - it's not the same reading it online)

Heathcliffscathy · 10/09/2005 12:08

rofl at this thread.

am moderately excited by new format proposition.

caligula, had you down as a grauniad reader, shows how much i know!

WideWebWitch · 10/09/2005 12:12

You can't get the Guardian crossword free on the internet and haven;t been able to for a couple of years. I started buying it quite a bit when they did that. I got an email about the format too, because I'm on Guardiantalk, despite having never worked out how to post there.

Janh · 10/09/2005 17:40

That'll be why I got it too www - and ditto about not being able to post!

(I was joking about the links, really and truly )

OP posts:
WideWebWitch · 10/09/2005 17:59

Janh, I thought it was just me being thick and unable to post on Guardian talk!

Tinker · 10/09/2005 18:29

Why can't you post? I do.

hatstand · 10/09/2005 19:31

it has been an enormous decision for them - huge investment in printing presses etc. If it flops then the paper folds. Even if it does sometimes print awful shite from ex tabloid journos like carol wotsername I'd hate to see it go. I'd be lost.

hatstand · 10/09/2005 19:33

if it flops it folds?? sounds kind of odd applied to a newpaper

snafsicle · 10/09/2005 19:50

I'm scared of GUTalk. I'm registered but never post. They're a feisty bunch...

Janh · 10/09/2005 20:20

I have posted in the past and it has subsequently shown me as logged in, but when I try it says "you are not logged in".

I love the Guardian

OP posts:
ScummyMummy · 10/09/2005 20:34

Me too, janh. It's like comfort food.

Nightynight · 10/09/2005 21:35

blimey - if you find the Guardian comforting, you'll love this website. The Guardian is just a dummy to keep quiet those of us that cant stomach the rest of the press; it never actually changes anything!

pootlepod · 10/09/2005 21:41

I just hope the telly guide will be the same.

Ericblack · 10/09/2005 22:46

I will have to buy it every day now as I'd hate to lose the Guardian. Vitally and as this is Mumsnet, I may now be more likely to read the news part as I will be able to turn the pages whilst breast feeding on the sofa without getting into difficulties.

Caligula · 10/09/2005 23:21

Ha ha Sophable. The Guardian is my default newspaper if I ever read a newspaper, but that is rare - never make time to read one. (Am going to buy the Sunday Times tomorrow though, as it's giving away a DVD I want.)

Caligula · 10/09/2005 23:22

I was harumphing about the silly Carol Sarler.

I gave up on the talk section too - I had the same message as you Jan - kept telling me I wasn't logged in.

Just as well really. Can't be addicted to 2 chatrooms!

WideWebWitch · 11/09/2005 07:46

WEll exactly Caligula, I decided I didn't have time in the end, I even emailed them to ask WHY couldn't I log in but got no reply. Oh well, just as well, as you say!

nikkie · 11/09/2005 19:59

But they are dropping 'pass notes' I love that! hope they keep 'perma chat'

duffy · 12/09/2005 11:51

Well what do all you Guardian fans think of the new paper? Have to say I love the clarity of the print and the colour spread in the middle. And it's a good size I reckon. Think it's gonna fly...

Ericblack · 12/09/2005 20:39

Loved it too. Shorter articles gave me time to read them and, as predicted was able to read the news section whilst breast feeding.

morningpaper · 12/09/2005 20:41

I couldn't concentrate on the news because I was distracted by the new exciting format. :-/

I'm too shallow for a newspaper ...

snafsicle · 12/09/2005 20:45

Hmmm, I'm yet to be convinced. I loved the old typeface. And I like black & white photos, grumble, grumble. I'm such an old fogey, obviously.
