So not only do higher earning lone parents not get CB when the couple next door will still be eligible, they will also get a tax reward for being married.

BBC story

They really don't like single parents do they? Angry

MollieO I wouldn't go looking that up just yet, not until after the 20th.

goodmanners · 05/10/2010 18:01

does it even have to be a full term? isnt there anyway to get the feckers out earlier? I have a plackard ready!

BramblyHedge · 05/10/2010 18:13

So basically they want to take money away from my kids (DP single earner on £43k/ me pregnant SAHM with 2 kids) and give it a married couple who may not even have kids. While I can live with us losing CB and appreciate that lots of families need it more, why should a couple with twice our income get and why should a well off married couple with no kids get a tax break which may well cancel out any benefit the CB cut brings.

activate · 05/10/2010 18:15

some married couples aren't well off you know

and tbh £150 a year is diddly-shit

LadyBiscuit · 05/10/2010 18:19

They have just said on PM that the tax break is going to cost more than the saving through cutting back on CB. Brilliant. So when you take into account the admin costs of the CB reduction, this is all going to cost us more in the end.

Great maths there

yep, I'll bet sam does the shopping because despite their wonderful education, their basic numeracy skills are rubbish. well either that or it is proof it is all ideological. or a form of social cleansing or both.

PosieParker · 05/10/2010 18:24

How politics works:

Yesterday - Child benefit cut.
Yesterday evening - huge backlash.
This morning - marriage allowance 'may' be introduced.
This afternoon - personal allowances may be transferable.
This evening - further 'clarifications' on Newsnight.
Tomorrow - "extremely difficult area will be looked at in the round."
Day after tomorrow - "wide-ranging consultation" announced.
Next week - proposals kicked into the long grass.

Hi all. Please see the petition which Josephine referred to earlier - it can be accessed via the facebook page she has set up.

My husband also wrote the following - he is absolutely livid with the government. He said he voted conservative this time(has voted 3 times in his life, twice for conservative, once for labour) but will never vote for tory again.

Our family - a higher rate tax payer dad, a stay at home mum (her annual salary wasn't sufficient to cover childcare costs / school clubs for our 3 young boys) and our 3 boys - fully support this petition.

I should also highlight the following policies which also impact on families where at least one earner pays higher rate tax. These policies have recently / are due to take effect. Although not all announced by the Coalition Government, they certainly had the opportunity to reverse them in June's Emergency Budget:

  1. From April 2011, an increase of 1% in the rate of National Insurance contributions paid by a higher rate taxpayer - for us, this results in additional contributions of £650 per annum.
  2. An increase of £1,000 in the personal allowance for basic rate taxpayers but not higher rate tax payers. A saving of £200 but not for us.
  3. A reduction in the tax relief on childcare vouchers for higher rate tax payers from April 2011, costing £640 per year.
  4. An inrease in fuel duty from 1 October and an additional increase in January 2011- I drive 90 miles per day to get to work and back (public transport takes 3 hours each way). Including VAT, that means an additional £110 per year.
  5. The government have also not ruled out the current tax relief on pension contributions given to higher rate taxpayers, altough this currently wouldn't impact us.

The government announced today that there may be a transferrable tax allowance for married couples. Well, the Conservative manifesto included a transferrable tax allowance of £750 - guess what, this is not for higher rate tax payers. It will save basic rate taxpayers £150 per year.

Of course, the government can do what it wants, and to whom it wants. However, I urge every higher rate taxpayer with a recognised qualification to consider what we are actually going to do and what many companies are considering - take your tax base away from the UK. Australia, Canada, the Middle East - they have very generous income tax systems for people who will be net contributors to their economy. I have an interview next week for a role in Australia. Just for background: Like a lot of people, we have inherited £0 wealth - I am the son of a docker, my wife the daughter of a miner who striked in the 80's. We don't have the luxury of being able to save our child benefit or spend it on outings for the children - ours goes towards buying their clothes from Asda / Tesco and their food from Aldi.

Finally, can the Coalition Government agree that when this crop of children are tax payers in 20/30 years, they do not need to contribute towards the state pensions of those adults who so fervently support your current policy?

Mr Cameron, you and your government will have a major impact on our family and similar families to us, including grandparents, whose grandchildren will grow up in a foreign country.

Margaret Thatcher Milk Snatcher, David Cameron Family Basher.

They're been talking about this marriage allowance since they were trying to get into power and my opinion is the same now as it was then. The allowance is a waste of time and effort, it isn't going to encourage people to get married since it would take you about 10 years of the allowance to pay back the cost of the marriage and that's with a basic celebration.

It isn't exactly anything to get excited about especially when you consider what they're taking away in exchange.

And LadyBiscuit, no but they're Tories, they don't like anyone that doesn't fit into their stereotype, that being upper middle class, married and rich. This isn't new information. I'm just hoping we get rid of them before there's not benefits left for anyone.

nancydrewrocked · 05/10/2010 19:01

It's not about encouraging people to get married though is it? It is about giving a fairer deal to families where there is a single income.

I agree absolutely that it ought to be extended to all cohabiting couples but if that happens then what would the real objection be?

booyhoo · 05/10/2010 19:05

ok, i haven't read the whole trhead so apologies if this has been covered,

can someone explain to me, if an explanation exists, what is the tories' justification for teh married couple tax break? how do they justify taking less money from people when there is such a huge debt?

again, i am sorry if this has been covered. i just don't understand it so need help.

Kaloki · 05/10/2010 19:10

I don't actually get why this tax break exists either booyhoo (and I say this as someone who is married)

It seems a pointless addition of admin unless they have further plans for it later down the line.

I hope if this happens we are allowed to opt out.

Kaloki · 05/10/2010 19:15

How stupid. How are they to know whether it is the "right thing to do"? They annoy me more and more every day :(

BelleDameSansMerci · 05/10/2010 19:15

Oh great, I didn't realise that I would be losing tax relief on my childcare allowance next year too. Thanks a fucking bunch you arrogant Tory wanking shitting fucking tossing bastards. Grrrrrrrrrrrr!

MsByte · 05/10/2010 19:16

I NEED YOUR SUPPORT TOO!

Please sign my petition ....

CHILD BENEFIT CUTS: Stop chancellor from unfairly targeting one-parent single-income families.

www.ipetitions.com/petition/unfair-childbenefit-cuts/signatures

I am a single mother with 2 kids and a full time job - gosh isn't it hard???

I am mortified that after juggling my home life with work to the point where I feel my brain is going to explode I am still not able to afford a beach holiday with the family, or new carpets, or to replace the wardrobe with the broken mirror in my bedroom , or the frame for 2 windows.
Why?? The usual every family faces - childcare, mortgage and bills!!!
Now I'm not eligible for Child Benefit any more!!!
For every extra hour I work I lose 40% to the tax man and now this????

mags99 · 05/10/2010 19:19

I am so terrified at what is happening - easy targets are being hit. Why focus on families with children? why not raise the top rate of income tax by a penny? What's next?

I would love to work outside the home, but have MS, and due to worsening health, paid work is currently not an option. We rely on CB to pay for food and childrens clothes, not lattes.

It is utter nonsense to create a system whereby I'd be better off divorced, or getting certified as unfit for work forever.

George and David seem so remote and removed from real families and their concerns.

MsByte · 05/10/2010 19:22

Please, please, please support my petition, I am soooo angry that we have been targeted yet again after losing child care vouchers, tax credits, do our children deserve less because they have only one parent???

Are we expected stay in a bad relationship, get married just because it's too difficult to survice on our own?

booyhoo · 05/10/2010 19:22
