Well done Julia Manning for this.

It's clearly not really about money - but great that someone is making a stand.

Oh fgs the woman is a loon, any phone that gives you Internet access also gives you access to a wide variety of porn. Stories, photos and movies. Mobile porn hub anyone ?

As a bloke who has used a fertility clinic when DW had IVF I think this article is utterly over the top.

I did wonder who Julia Maning was and I see form Catkins post that she has personal moral objections to fertility treatment. Fair enough but the article is still worng.

Three things did spring to mind when I read the article:

  1. She is not qualified to discuss the issue as she has never had to produce a sample to order in a small sterile room with a nurse pacing up and down the other side of a plasterboard wall.
  1. The cost she objects to is a tiny pimple on the moutain of cost that is the NHS ad is a non issue.
  1. If she objects to porn or fertility treatment then by all means write about that but dont use this as the line of attack.

I did produce one saple at home but having then to rush across London to get it to the clinic it was not the best way. DW did come to the cliic wth me a couple of times and we produced a sample together. That is the best way in my view. I also did it on my own a couple of times. It was not exactly top of my list of things to do before I died but it as not that bad. I did see a few blokes at the clinic who were clearly very upset and who just could not produce a sample because they were so nervous and under pressure.

I had a chat with the Director who ran our cliic and she said they had videos, mechanical aids and magazines because they realised it was sometimes difficult. Most men have been through an emptional mill with their DW/DP before getting to IVF so being told to produce a sample in a small time window on demand with no option for failure is not pleasant or easy.

I have to admit the thing I did struggle most with though was being treated like a stud bull and the Director of the clinic did admit they were trying to change that attititude among staff.

All medical conditions from acne to cancer could be viewed as part of natural human variation. If we take that view - we should all be xian scientisits and refuse all medical treatment.

Just think of the money that would save - might solve the population growth problem to boot - except that we would also do away with contraception.

Catkinsthecatinthehat · 13/09/2010 12:47

As well as banning IVF, Manning wanted NHS treatment for varicose veins, acne and short stature withdrawn as well as cosmetic procedures. Varicose veins can be extremely painful, severe acne can cause physical and psychological scars, short stature can be seriously life limiting, and most NHS 'cosmetic' procedures are to correct disfigurements.

She's not exactly nuanced in her approach!

Julia Manning has never looked at a man lustfully, except her husband? I pity her.

Anyway, I can't imagine the kind of pressure that my DH was under when he had to provide his samples for the clinic. I'm astonished that any man can manage to orgasm in such a dreadful environment, and with so much hanging on the outcome.

Acinonyx · 13/09/2010 13:11

Indeed. We did 5 IVFs. For the first one - dh's sample had zero sperm in it. Dr asked if he's had lunch yet - fortunately he hadn't - so they put under general immediately and extracted surgically. I was still under general myself throughout.

Then the was the time dh was asked for a 2nd sample Hmm Hmm

Very undignified business all round really. Can't imagine what it must be like to actually enjoy making a baby!

Lovely glossy coat BeenBeta, obviously been taking your vitamins.

Catkinsthecatinthehat · 13/09/2010 13:51

Well Julia Manning is a qualified optometrist BeenBeta, so she's probably just worried that it will make you go blind. Grin

funny ... i'm no fan of porn but certainly didn't object to DH having access to some "aids" when it was his turn in the ring. there is not a lot of dignity in fertility treatment and you've got to do what you've got to do.
