Birth certificate mix up

This article made me howl with laughter. Apologies for the link to the Daily Fail.

How on earth did they not notice that the registrar had listed their dd as a ds? According to the article it took a week for the couple to notice the error. Correct me if I'm wrong but where I live they give you the birth certificate to take away as well as discussing the details as they fill it in.

Raydon????

misdee · 17/08/2010 21:41

dd4 had her surname spelt wrong on her birth certificate. dh, myself and the registar missed it. oops! and it caused minor issues at the docs as they had the misspelt surname on their system, even though it was corrected straight away at the office.

TheCrackFox · 17/08/2010 21:46

A It was an administrative error. These things happen.

B It is a bit of a boys name so they need to expect this kind of thing.

C The name also sounds like Radon Gas. Confused

bran · 17/08/2010 21:48

My DS's last passport said he was female. Hmm DH and I didn't notice until a check-in lady refered to DS as 'she'.

I guess there are some advantages to being a complete pedant. Grin

dd2's birth certificate is wrong.

dh & I queried it at the time, and were told that ti was right (office person even went away to double check)

we queried it again, pointing out why we thought it was wrong, and we were told that this was the way ti was now done (a bit of a "this is how the computer has printed it, so it must be right" situation)

dd2 now has a passport with completely the wrong name on it (as in not her name at all), and when we queried that, we were told that this is the only way the passport office can print her passport, due to her birth certificate and what is printed on that.

so, due to a glitch in the system, dd2 has a passport that is not in her name, a birth certificate that is uncorrectable (her name is rigth on the actual Register, but the computer can only print the certificate wrong!), and is destined to go through life having to book any travel documents in the wrong name.

ValiumSingleton · 18/08/2010 11:32

silverfrog! what a nightmare! that is ridiculous. surely a human being can override that madness........ Confused, or are the computers the boss?

silverfrog · 18/08/2010 11:51

oh, it's all complicated

basically, we (dh's family) have a title.

when the system changed over to computerised, about 2 weeks before dd2 was registered, the programming (my interpretation here) seems to allow for standard titles (Mr/Miss) to be input, via the drop down menus, and then ignored when it comes to the print out.

All our other children, with handwritten birth certs, have the title written on there, as part of the surname (as is correct). this is no longer allowed with the computerised system. instead, (and much to our surprise) the title was available from the drop down menu. so the data was input, press go, and the certificate was printed, in the format

title silvertadpole middlename middlename surname.

that is what we queried, as the box now reads: Name: title silvertadpole etc etc.

bod went away and checked with superiors (he was keen to do so, as this was the first non-standard entry the office had had since the system wnet live). answer came back "that is what the computer has printed, so it must be right" we asked whether Mr/Miss got printed as well, and apparently it does (have not actually verified this with my own eyes, though).

so we went away thinking how easy that was.

until we applied for dd2's passport.

which came back in the name of title surname.

we queried, and have been told that the passport office can only print the first word in the name box as the first name on a passport.

to make matters worse (in case we are trying to dupe anyone, i suppose!) dd2's passport states, on the extra info bit "the reference to "title" on the name page is the child's name and not a title" Angry

and there would appear to be nothing we can do about it.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 18/08/2010 12:40

I was astonished that they didn't notice for a week. When our DD was born, I had to go to the office in the hospital and report her birth, the woman gave me an Arabic birth cert (written in Arabic characters), an Arabic cert typed in Arabic characters and one in English. She also has a British certificate from the embassy. I would have noticed immediately if either of the English ones were wrong. Goodness knows what the Arabian ones say though!

DinahRod · 18/08/2010 12:44

But that's what happens when naming your dd after a radioactive gas that blights property areas.

Pixel · 18/08/2010 20:49

Bit of over-dramatisation about the 'missed' jabs I think, a few days are hardly going to make much difference. It's not as though you miss the deadline and that's it, you can never have those jabs for the rest of your life.

Going to the papers over a simple clerical error tsk tsk. (Perhaps they thought it meant they'd have to start dressing her in blue. Grin)

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 18/08/2010 21:08

"his daughter missed her six week immunisations against whooping cough and diphtheria."

But there aren't any six week immunisations against whooping cough and diptheria. They are supposed to be at eight weeks.

prozacfairy · 18/08/2010 21:09

Awful, awful name, especially for a girl. Apologies to anyone considering that name but it sounds like a gas and electricity supplier/double glazing firm/condom.

I'm surprised it took a week to notice this cock up tbh. The lady who registered DD's name insisted we both carefully check all details before signing, and ofcourse in my pfb state I showed it to my mum, sister, gran, nextdoors cat when I saw them. Grin

As for the jabs, puh-lease! wont make an ounce of difference waiting few days or even weeks while it's all sorted. Hope they learnt a valuable lesson bout reading something through carefully before signing it!

We didn't bother correcting it TSH. He's just got a new one now because the old one was about to expire. He's travelled far and wide and the only person to notice was that one check-in lady in Kuala Lumpur. Grin

SparklyJules · 18/08/2010 23:22

DH's occupation was spelt wrong on DS's birth certificate. When I pointed it out to the registrar she turned ashen and shrieked "but it's a legal document now!". I had to sit in reception for 2 hours whilst more senior people scurried about trying to fix it.

withorwithoutyou · 18/08/2010 23:25

According to the worst rated comments - the DD's mother has explained that it's a variation of her Father's name Raymond, not a mispelling of a kind of gas.

withorwithoutyou · 18/08/2010 23:26

Really sparkly? DH put my middle name down wrong on DD2's birth certificate.

Haven't done anything about it.

Nothing exciting, Lenin Grin

Possibly the worst title imaginable, and definitely NOT one that anyone would use as a name a la Princess Tiiami.

Everyone who looks at the passport does a double take - the rest of us have such traditional, ordinary names, and poor dd2 is saddled with a ridiculous one that no one in their right mind would choose!
