Zac Goldsmith and Ch 4 News

I watched a report last night about whether Zac Goldsmith among other M.P.s was guilty of overspending on his campaign.

I kind of dismissed it as a petty targetting of Mr. Goldsmith because of who he is.

But tonight on Ch. 4, I see him evading and dancing round the questions about his campaign funding levels, instead focusing on why he wasn't called for a live interview last night.

It was really embarrassing. Did anyone else see it?

Are all M.P.'s really the same? If so, why does anyone even bother to get excited about politics.

No he didn't. Zac Goldsmith made himself look like a complete idiot.

gingercat12 · 17/07/2010 15:58

Wow! Quite disappointed by Zac Goldsmith. Jon Snow was not right in every single question, and Goldsmith still managed to come across as an arrogant, slimy bastard. And I have just asked my boss to invite him to an event, and to sit me next to him. Hope he'll say no.

merrymouse · 17/07/2010 16:21

So did he explain what he is going to do/did with the 65,000 posters he didn't use?

Did he compost them, or are we really going to see the same posters in 4 year's time?

legoStuckinmyhoover · 17/07/2010 17:23

Just watched it...what a headache I have now. I haven't seen such a panic striken MP for ages. Talk about unprofessional, especially with the mild threat at the end of the interview. I think it's awful and if he was my MP, I wouldn't want to go within spitting distance of him.

I am wondering if he used the 'attack is the best form of defence' strategy here [what with just talking/shouting/wagging his pen/stabbing the table for half the interview].

noddyholder · 17/07/2010 17:46

I met him at a party once a few years ago now he looked like a supermodel but had the brain of a pea

singersgirl · 17/07/2010 17:50

Yes, isn't it interesting how people can take such different things out of watching that? I was deeply embarrassed for ZG, even though I found JS hectoring and irritating too. ZG just made himself look like a little boy who wouldn't give up a tantrum, I thought.

But do you think our opinions are really only based on our political views? I don't see how anyone could have thought him 'brilliant' but then I didn't vote for him or his party.

legoStuckinmyhoover · 17/07/2010 18:01

When I watched it I was trying hard to be impartial. Even if he were from another party I think i would still think the same.

I thought he came across as rude and then at the end when he said "you had better watch it", I was totally gobsmacked. It is tantamount to a threat, if not one. He was given a chance to defend himself and explain but decided to attack and threaten instead.

YouKnowNothingoftheCrunch · 17/07/2010 18:14

I was appalled. It was one thing for him to say 'actually I was happy to come on the show' and then answer the questions, completely another thing to repeat himself over and over and over again in the hopes that he might negate the argument.

Up until I saw zac I thought this was a bit of a non-story. Now I'm wondering what else it is he's hiding.

Not the kind of politics I want to see at all. He came across as a silly little man.

Piffle · 17/07/2010 18:38

Well he has committed adultery too which may or may not reflect on his " honesty" ratio
I'd be happy to call him a conniving little shit tbh

expatinscotland · 17/07/2010 18:42

Who cares? He's still a lying cheater.

claig · 17/07/2010 18:44

Who? Jon Snow?

legoStuckinmyhoover · 17/07/2010 18:49

And he wasn't even wearing a tie.

expatinscotland · 17/07/2010 18:53

No, Zac-admitted-adultery-in-court-papers -now-shacking-up-with-his-mistress.

daftpunk · 17/07/2010 19:00

Do you really think he would risk everything over £2500?....I mean really?

"who cares? he's still a lying cheater"..

Y'know sometimes expat your in depth analysis astounds me...Jon Snow look out..

Pollyanna · 17/07/2010 19:04

zac goldsmith was completely cringeworthy imo. just wanted to avoid the questions, showed him in a bad light. Jon Snow was ok I think, although i think he should have just moved onto the next topic, and cut zg off.

mrsruffallo · 17/07/2010 19:28

I agree with claig, I think that ZG came out on top.

BarmyArmy · 17/07/2010 19:43

Zac Goldsmith came out well, making the point that C4 News had been dishonest in their coverage of this story.

Jon Snow is rather pompous and makes no pretence of apearing to be impartial.

merrymouse · 17/07/2010 20:00

Seen the clip now. Speaking as a constituent of Zac, I think he came across as a complete twat.

On the other hand to be fair to him, I think all the posters stuck on multimillion pound houses didn't really help him come across as a man of the people, so even if he did overspend, it wasn't really money well spent. The fleet of Tim nice but Dims rushing around on scooters on polling day were also a bit of a turn off. (Not sure how these were funded).

I think he won his seat because both he and his opponent ran very similar campaigns, but he promised to resign if they went ahead with an additional runway at Heathrow. We'll see how that pans out for him.

singersgirl · 17/07/2010 20:26

You see, I just don't get how can anyone think that ZG came out well. I don't think JS came out well either, but ZG came out spectacularly badly - the only way I can account for what I see as the suspension of people's critical faculties is that they are so politically partisan they can't spot Z's failings. He was like my children trying to shout me down because they don't want to admit the truth about something they've don.

hoppity · 17/07/2010 20:45

Zac has something to hide. No question. Cannot believe he spent 6 minutes (or whatever) arguing about the details of the previous evening's feature / what time he sent in his statement etc instead of addressing the real question. He came across as an arrogant little shit.

This kind of thing scares me.

Unbelievable.

noddyholder · 17/07/2010 20:57

This is what you get when someone who is a jumped up spoiled brat who has led a charmed life decides he wants a real job

expatinscotland · 17/07/2010 21:01

I'd continue to answer you, DP, but I'm afraid I make it a policy not to engage in discussion with racists.

So please carry on getting personal with me at every opportunity you can.

It's mildly amusing.

To be honest though, you would have to be too stupid to vote to not realise that Zac Goldsmith achieved his position through connections and inherited wealth. Given that we live in a democracy, does it matter if the majority who voted for him get what they deserve? Obviously people like me who didn't vote for him aren't too happy, but I don't think there will be a revolts in Richmond and Kew if he is found 'guilty'.

WinkyWinkola · 17/07/2010 21:25

There won't be revolts in Richmond and Kew but according to those rules, he'll have to stand down as an M.P..

And no doubt, will many other M.P.s because I don't imagine Zac Goldsmith will want to step down alone.

And the whole shenanigans will begin again! except not really
