My new Henry sucks too hard

cornflakegirl · 01/05/2010 14:52

I bought a Henry vacuum because so many people on here raved about them, but I'm finding that he's a bit too powerful. Most of my carpets are a really short pile but it's still very hard work to move the head about. Am I doing something wrong?

No idea about vacuum cleaners, but can I nominate this for the Title Of The Week Award.

LOL

ChocolatePants · 01/05/2010 14:54

Sorry no advice, the title is funny tho.

MmeLindt · 01/05/2010 14:54

Thank goodness. I just had a thought that perhaps I was the only one with a dirty mind.

MrsMargate · 01/05/2010 14:55

ISn't there some sort of vent you can pull so that you reduce the suction by allowing air in through the hose/handle somewhere?

littledawley · 01/05/2010 14:55

Best title ever!! Didn't read what topic it was in and assumed it was in 'breastfeeding'!!

ChocolatePants · 01/05/2010 14:56

OOh, Mrs Margete knows her stuff.

toccatanfudge · 01/05/2010 14:56

fab title

TheJollyPirate · 01/05/2010 14:56

I have a filthy mind too BUT am looking for a new vacuum cleaner and think you have just sold me on the Henry.

Is there any kind of adjustable switch on the head of the cleaner which would allow you to vary for the type of carpet.

MmeLindt · 01/05/2010 14:57

Littledawley
I thought it was going to be in the Relationship topic, seeing as we don't have a Friday Night topic (yet)

solo · 01/05/2010 14:59

My first thought was Ooooer Missus!!!

MrsMargate · 01/05/2010 14:59

after a brief google I can tell you this

a) I'm wrong
b) there is a suck adjust switch
c) it could be a problem with head - as in henry's - buy a new vacuum head.

toccatanfudge · 01/05/2010 15:01

PMSL @ "problem with head"

MmeLindt · 01/05/2010 15:03

All this without wine.

Should be baking DD's birthday cake

toccatanfudge · 01/05/2010 15:06

personally I've always had a problem with head

cornflakegirl · 01/05/2010 15:09

You lot need to wash your minds out with soap and water!

There is a suck-adjust switch, but it makes him more powerful, not less. There's also a vent thing on the solid hose bit that reduces it to 70% suction, but I assume this is intended for soft furnishings etc rather than standard hoovering.

solo · 01/05/2010 15:29

Toccata, I'm pretty good with the head...
mind you, I have a Dyson and they have very stretchy hoses; the solid bit is quite long on its own.

toccatanfudge · 01/05/2010 15:33

oh yes the Dyson gives has good head

wildstrawberryplace · 01/05/2010 15:39

Have you flipped the head so that the bristles on the brush are retracted? It's meant to be retracted for carpets, not retracted for hard floors. I tried it on the carpet with the bristles and couldn't move it either.

blackmilkofdaybreak · 01/05/2010 15:49

ROFL

CheeeseOnToast · 01/05/2010 15:53

There's a flip switchy thing on the head which retracts the bristles, making it easier to go over carpet. Also, there's a black moveable section on the metal arm which, if you twiddle with it, will let more air into the pipe and thus reduce suction.

Also, you can use the switch on the body to make it half sucky.

I love my Henry, his suction is perfect.

catinthehat2 · 01/05/2010 15:53

"There's also a vent thing on the solid hose bit that reduces it "

I think you need to use that bit until it calms down when the bag gets fuller. YOu can slide it round to get your exact requirement.

cornflakegirl · 01/05/2010 16:30

Thank you to everyone posting sensible responses!

The brushes are retracted, and the switch is set to the default eco setting. Will continue using the vent until the bag gets full. Thanks for the reassurance.

Hi i have a new eco henry and an old carpet i had same problem, kept lifting carpet. Now i find no brush, eco setting and vent half way open does trick ok. Bags dont fill up that quick and last for ages so keeping this setting all time probs best. I never use the brushes cos they are quite hard except sometimes if i hoover wood floor in kitchen.

cornflakegirl · 02/05/2010 21:35

Thanks peachybums
