Am torn between a Dyson and a Miele? what do you lovely people have and recommend. What modes too. Would love an upright but am open to persuasion!

I have a Miele cylinder & it's wonderful. You do have to buy bags for it but you get pretty much maximum suction until they're nearly full, & they hold all the dust inside (some sort of static lining?) so none escapes when you change the bag.

It's very light to carry up & down stairs & sits neatly on the stairs when you're doing them.

I have had a Dyson upright & wasn't impressed. It was heavy & awkward, fiddly to take apart & put back together (& if I didn't do it quite right it didn't work properly), I got dust clouds floating around whenever I emptied the container (always had to do it outside) & it wasn't good at edges or going under low things.

Miele. I've got a cat and dog cylinder, and it is brilliant, much better than our old Dyson. They always score really well in Which tests

Gentleness · 25/05/2010 22:54

Miele. No contest. Dyson was awful.

Thediaryofanobody · 25/05/2010 23:30

I have a Dyson rollerball it's fantastic, It's so easy and light to move around. It picks up wonderfully and really does get around and into hard to reach spots meaning I hardly ever use the attachments or hose.
We got the smaller one because it's handle folds down making it even smaller so it can fit into small cupboards and the like.
Being light and fairly small makes it easy and safe to use on stairs too IMO.
I hate Vacuum with bags it's so much better to hold it over the bin and give a button a push and empty it, takes 10 seconds.
I have some issues with the muscles and joints in the arms and the Rollerball really has made a difference in me being able to use it without stain.

That said my old styled Dyson really was heavy and awkward but the Rollerball one is fantastic.

I sound like a fanatic, in my defense our house is mostly carpeted so a good vacuum is important to me.

Sebo - all the way, German, miles better than either. Good Housekeeping Institute top buy!

ShirleyKnot · 16/06/2010 22:33

Miele.

The only thing that Dyson sucks is cock.

The end.

cluelessnchaos · 16/06/2010 22:36

Miele all the way

DilysPrice · 16/06/2010 22:38

Dysons are really unreliable - they now come with a 5 year guarantee but I'd rather have one that doesn't break in the first place thank you.

OTOH I now have a Miele cylinder which may clean very well, but has a bag which I have to cut open in the garden before I dispose of it to find the vital little Lego pieces which it has eaten - bagless is much easier from that point of view, and you can shove the dirt (less the toys you've rescued) straight onto the compost if you have wool carpets.

Yes I am aware that my views on Lego rescue are not entirely normal - it's a family thing.

Miele here too. I have a cylinder Cat and Dog, wouldn't trade it for my old Dyson in a million years. MIL has an Oreck but she secretly craves my vacuum because it picks up dog hair like nobody's business whilst her Oreck just moves it around a bit.

thisisyesterday · 16/06/2010 22:39

miele definitely

crockydoodle · 21/06/2010 18:43

Another one for Miele here ( I have had both)

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 21/06/2010 18:46

What did Sunnyshine buy?? I think she started the thread in April?

lifeissweet · 21/06/2010 19:04

I love my Miele. Much prefer it to the Dyson I used to have.

lifeissweet · 21/06/2010 19:06

I can't quite believe I've just announced that I love my vaccuum cleaner. My crazy youth is officially over.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 21/06/2010 19:11

Miele, good.
Dyson, shite.

Am talking from experience of both.

Butterbur · 21/06/2010 19:15

Miele.

I threw out my £300 Dyson as it got blocked every time it sucked up a dried pea. I was constantly dismantling it. I've had the Miele replacement for about ten years now, and it's great.

BessieBoots · 21/06/2010 19:17

I used one of those Henry vacuum cleaners last week. Never seen anything like it, it was amazing.

CatJosephine · 21/06/2010 19:30

another vote for Miele here

saltyseadog · 21/06/2010 19:32

Miele (have had both).

cece · 21/06/2010 19:43

Had a Dyson once, never again.

Now have a Henry and will be getting another if this one goes wrong ever!

maclover135 · 21/06/2010 19:51

Miele cat and dog here too Have also suffered the evil that is Dyson - never again!

mummyrex · 21/06/2010 19:51

Had a Miele, fab for 5 years. Like others have said, max power until full bag. BUT, it died suddenly and am looking to replace it with a Henry Turbo which I think should last longer.

Wouldn't consider a Dyson after all I've heard about them.

smokinaces · 21/06/2010 19:55

Miele. Love mine.

McSteamy · 21/06/2010 19:56

Miele cat and dog here! Tis a no brainer

mrsfred · 21/06/2010 20:00

Another vote for Miele.

Had one and changed it for a Dyson. Dyson was crap and changed back to Miele very quickly.

I have a cat and dog cylinder. Its fab and comes with two additional heads with revolving brushes; one for heavy carpets and a smaller head for the car.
