what do you use to clean the loo?

exciting topic i know, but as i mentioned in the other topic i created (cleaning bathroom whilst kids are bathing), i gave the loo a clean whilst my friend was helping me bath my dd. Anyhow i gave the loo a squirt of my usual domestos. We got talking about it and she reckons that bleach doesn't kill all the nasty germs because it doesn't remove the limescale that they hide under, and that if i wanted to zap all the germs i should i use a cleaner like harpic or toilet duck. Is this true? What do you use in your loo?

gah, i never use bleach or anything like that- terible for the environment

i use a small squirt of ecover toilet cleaner (yes, i know there are even more eco-friendly alternatives!!!) and some elbow grease

how clean do yo need it to be??? you only wee/poo in it...

HinnyPet · 13/04/2010 22:39

The scrubby disposable flushable toilet duck brush!

the harpic limescale remover stuff in the black bottle.

Live in massively hard water area though

stofstg · 13/04/2010 22:48

why do i wanna kill toilet germs? Erm because i have a wondering toddler who puts her hands in places where she shouldn't. I thought this was why all us mums clean the loo, to kill germs, no?

there are probably more nasty germs on the seat, the lid & the handle, & the taps on the basin, & the doorknob

so don't kill yourself over cleaning the bowl.

thisisyesterday · 13/04/2010 22:51

no, i keep the toilet lid down and the toilet door shut, and my children know not to put their hands down it.

i clean my toilet so it doesn't look manky, not in case my children decide to lick it lol

Anything but bleach!

Tiredmumno1 · 13/04/2010 23:02

I love harpic power plus, i didnt think i would find a loo cleaner that would work, used this though a couple of years back, never used anything but since, its great.

stofstg · 13/04/2010 23:02

ah right. Didn't see this backlash coming lol na my toddlers wonders around as any other does and my friend said she once found her boy stood over the loo bowl touching the water, hence my rather keeness to make sure its as germ free as possible. Obviously i also wipe over the seat and handle, etc. Well getting back to the question, if you don't use domestos/bleach what do you use? Harpic, toilet duck? Is that ecover any good then? I'm all ears cos i squirted the last of my domestos tonight so will be looking for some loo cleaner next time at the shops, preferbly one that will take care of germs

I use whatever's on special offer but cannot stand the smell of bleach. We're all still alive .

thisisyesterday · 13/04/2010 23:07

my toddler touches his own bum a lot too, and the floor (a lot), the bin... the list is endless! i think the toilet is the least of your worried to be honest!

stofstg · 13/04/2010 23:09

i'm being serious stofstg!!! you can "whatevaaaa" me as much as you like... but really, i am sure your toilet is as clean as it needs to be.

i mean really, if you're worried about him coming into contact with the toilet then what on earth do you do outside??

you do realise that dogs shit on the floor don't you? and no-one bleaches it?

DrivenToDistraction · 13/04/2010 23:14

There's absolutely no need or excuse to use bleach every day . You really don't need to worry about it so much.

I also have a toddler (2.4) but I can't say I'm worried about germs, DD uses the loo and I've never seen her climbing into it / licking it / playing in it. TBH the main function of daily cleaning here is to get her sticky prints off the seat and tap...

Anyway, for the bowl I use limescale remover once a fortnight or so, bleach once a week and cheap bubble bath on the other days. I clean the seat etc. with a vinegar, water and a drop of washing up liquid (in a spay bottle).

stofstg · 13/04/2010 23:15

its only a forum hehe no need to get argumentative. I do get what you're saying though

OP posts:
DrivenToDistraction · 13/04/2010 23:16

Oh, and I'd say limescale remover is the most important thing really. No need to go mad with it though.

glastocat · 13/04/2010 23:18

I clean my loo because it gets manky looking otherwise, not because I'm scared of germs. I use that Harpic black bottle stuff as it seems to be the most nuclear option, but I've also used bleach if I feel its required.

stofstg · 13/04/2010 23:24

driventodistraction - yeah i only put bleach down my loo about twice a week or when i know i got guests, but wipe over the seat and flush daily when i get up in the morning. I'm not in any way overly ocd. I just happened to bleach the loo tonight

Tiredmumno1 · 14/04/2010 19:04

And to let you know on the bottle of harpic power plus it says it kills all germs, and eliminates tough stains and limescale. hth

Indith · 14/04/2010 19:11

Ecover or vinegar nad bicarb, a cloth and a pair of marigolds.
