Kitchen, who is it who has 2 dishwashers?

Is it worth it? I'm thinking 2 slimline dishwashers.

Kitchen is fairly small but there are 6 of us and I like the idea of rarely having to unload one.........

When I was an au pair, my host family had two dishwashers.

MitchyInge · 08/04/2010 19:24

lots of observant Jewish people?

CarGirl · 08/04/2010 19:26

Noah how did you find using them or did you not get involved with running the kitchen.......

2 ?

Fel1x · 08/04/2010 19:29

oh i'd love 2 dishwashers, would be ideal.
if i ever get rich and move to big house i will get 2

plimsolls · 08/04/2010 19:30

When I first read this, I thought "Why would you need two dishwashers?". And then, I thought.... you are actually a genius.

You'd basically have the equivalent of cupboards that wash your plates for you!

CarGirl · 08/04/2010 19:38

Exactly plimsolls........and no more dirty stuff on the side because the clean stuff still needs emptying out!

Fisher and Paykal do a lovely 2-drawer dishwasher - same principle....

ChunkyPickle · 08/04/2010 19:40

I'm sure I've seen kiwi dishwashers (draw style) where you can run the top and bottom draws separately for the same reason.

Maybe my boyfriend and I are messy people - but we seem to run our slimline most days with just the two of us - so are you sure that one slimline will be big enough for 6 people?

IReadCookeryBooksInBed · 08/04/2010 19:43

I would love just one dishwasher...

bran · 08/04/2010 19:50

My brother has the Fisher and Paykel 2-drawer dishwasher and finds it very convenient. It wouldn't be big enough for a family of 6 though.

I do know people who have 2 dishwashers, if I can find the space in my new house I will definitely have 2. There is still some emptying to be done because you don't use exactly the same things everyday, but on the whole it works very well. Especially if emptying the dishwasher is the job that everyone ignores in the hope that someone else (the dishwasher fairy maybe?) will do it.

I suspect the biggest bonus of having two dishwashers comes when one breaks down. At least you still have a dishwasher, if you only have one then things have to be washed by hand.

bibbitybobbityhat · 08/04/2010 19:53

?

But they both need emptying eventually. You are just delaying the inevitable.

There will be times when both need emptying. Nightmare!

I have 2 dishwashers, 2 tumble dryers, 2 washing machines and 2 fridge freezers. Greedy - that's me

They would only both need emptying if you'd had a dinner party or something. It works like this.

Fill dishwasher A with dirty dishes. Run the wash overnight.

In the morning take breakfast dishes from dishwasher A (about the same effort as taking them from the cupboard), when used load them into dishwasher B.

Ditto for other meals.

At the end of the day empty the few remaining items from dishwasher A and set dishwasher B to run overnight.

Repeat until the pattern on your plates starts to fade and you realise that it would have been a good idea to rotate them with the ones in the cupboard occasionally.

Hassled · 08/04/2010 20:05

It's genius. I've only just acquired Dishwasher 1, but Dishwasher 2 is my new aim.

CarGirl · 08/04/2010 20:07

The drawer ones have really really mixed reviews and all the spare parts come from Kiwi where they are made and wher they have soft soft water whereas I have thames valley rock hard water.......

Have discounted the drawer ones.

I'm thinking worst case scenario if I don't like it I replace on dishwasher with a cupboard instead?

no pattern on plates - tick
do not have lots of pots & pans so won't clutter up clean dishwasher - tick

CarGirl - this is at the top of my list when I get my extension. I got 4 numbers on the lottery last week so only have to save up £60k more

There was an article in a home magazine about designing kitchens for serious cooks and it was mentioned that this would be a good idea if you had the room.

Anyway I'm off to do my washing up by hand. [grumpy] and wipe down my scorched woodewn worktops.

CarGirl · 08/04/2010 20:18

I want to hear of more experiences of people who do this.

I also really fancy a plate warming drawer, however was thinking that most of the time I could use it as plate storage and just take out the ones I didn't want to warm IYSWIM

TheDailyWail · 08/04/2010 21:51

I wouldn't bother with a plate warming device. Couldn't you time a wash cycle on your dishwasher and set it to finish at the same time as serving time?

Legacy · 08/04/2010 23:14

We're planning a plate-warming drawer. It can also keep food warm, and defrost stuff. A friend of mine swears by hers
