Kitchen, who is it who has 2 dishwashers?

Is it worth it? I'm thinking 2 slimline dishwashers.

Kitchen is fairly small but there are 6 of us and I like the idea of rarely having to unload one.........

I am aiming for 2 washing machines hf and everyone I have mentioned this to does the old face and mutters about the environment.

I don't think it will be worse for the environment as I'm certainly not going to do more washing - I'll just do exactly the same amount of washing in half the time.

Am I right?

ZacharyQuack · 08/04/2010 23:24

I have 2 dishdrawers and they are great. The top drawer holds all the cutlery, plates, glasses etc and the bottom drawer has the pots and pans.

They have separate motors so if one drawer breaks, the other one still works.

You can run each drawer independently so it's not a big deal to run one drawer with breakfast and lunch dishes.

DoesntGetTougherThanThis · 08/04/2010 23:38

You can warm plates in the microwave. Just put them in, then on high power for 2 minutes.

Legacy · 09/04/2010 09:22

The thing about a warming drawer is that the plates are there, and ready when you need them...

If I'm cooking for a big group I don't have time to remember to stick plates in a microwave, and I'm probably already using it anyway, for some other part of the meal.

Warming drawer also allows you to keep food warm without continuing to 'cook' it.

we have two dishwashers and its one of the best decisions we made when designing our new kitchen. it works just like bran says, except we DO use the ones in the cupboard as well

pictures on my profile i think

KristinaM · 09/04/2010 22:34

dishwashers are at the end of the run of units, in the photo that is the wrong way round . when not in the machine, the dishes live in the cupboards above and plate rack

we have had lots of kids to load/unload the dishwashers

CarGirl · 09/04/2010 22:35

Your kitchen is HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE

We have space for 9 base units plus 1 corner one.........

OP posts:
KristinaM · 09/04/2010 22:40

i would give up a cupboard any day for a second dishwasher

also you have the staff

Melody4 · 09/04/2010 22:40

Our kitchen is only small but I am now tempted to get rid of a cupboard to put in an extra dishwasher! Great idea!

KristinaM · 09/04/2010 22:43

we got one with a low noise level and put sounds insulation around it, so you can still eat in the kitchen when its running

wish the same trick worked on the kids

CarGirl · 09/04/2010 22:46

We're getting a conservatory to use as a utility room for the washing machine and the cats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Getting cats has turned out to be very expensive!

We are cursed blessed with an original 60's open plan tiny hovelhouse. Can't hear the TV when the kettle boils etc., certainly can't eat in the kitchen - far too small.

OP posts:
KristinaM · 09/04/2010 22:50

i know....bloody open plan was invented by someone without kids

looks so cool in all the ikea magazines - hellish to live with

have you noticed that none of the kids in these magazines are fighting over the TV remote/Wii/playstation/kicking a football around the living room? They are all colouring tasteful pictures while their happy parents read magazines on the pristine white sofa

CarGirl · 09/04/2010 22:54

If you saw our kitchen how you would laugh, one corner unit has all the plumbing in it, the other corner has the gas meter and stopcock on it. It's square and no decent run to put units on at all, complete nightmare to plan. concrete floors so can't put pipes under floorboards etc etc

We're going to spend £££££££££££££££££££££'s to have a very basic kitchen but 2 dishwashers is very tempting. Do you think I could get all our "larder" stuff in 1 full height pull out larder drawer?

OP posts:
KristinaM · 09/04/2010 22:58

depends how much larder stuff you have and how oftne you shop { not very helpful i know)

and why are you building conservatory for cats when you coudl build an extension for YOU and have a bigger kitchen ( sorry if thsi is bloody stupid question)?

CarGirl · 09/04/2010 23:03

Garden is tiny so utility room/conservatory is being built between the back door (which is actually the most used entrance) and the brick sheds - that we can't take down as they are interlinked with nieghbours. Think garden is about 14'x12'

Only have small fridge and small freezer and don't think I can fit in large fridge so have to shop fairly frequent 6 people seem to consume an awful lot of fruit!

Cats in utility room means don't have to have doors on kitchen to shut them in at night, also washing machine in utility frees up unit space for 2nd dishwasher! Tumble dryer already reside in shed - in part this is due to previous x 2 cat who was frightened of tumble dryer

OP posts:
KristinaM · 09/04/2010 23:37

oh no! small fridge is a pain! there are 5-6 of us too and we have tall fridge and still have to shop for fruit/veg/milk several times a week

we put freezer in utility room to allow for tall fridge in kitchen, but sounds like your utility area is already full. unless you could stack your washing machine & drier in the shed? or put freezer in shed? you probably only go to freezer once or twice a day.

do you need large fridge more than second dishwasher?

why don't you put gas meter outside ( in box, assuming its on external wall )?

you need to start a new thread asking for planning tips for a small kitchen. i got LOADS of good advice here on planning a low maintenance kitchen as I'm a lazy slob

CarGirl · 10/04/2010 20:01

The cost of moving the gas meter is astronomical - already though of that, and discounted it! No it.s not on an outside wall it's in the centre of the house and we're a terrace

I don't want to put the washing machine outside because I like to sort it all out on the floor etc and then you may have to empty the clean washing back out when it's peeing down with rain - then take it inside to sort out what you are tumbling etc. Putting the freezer in the shed is something we've considered but it we add a utility room it may as well go there and help keep the cats warmer in winter

We desperately need more worktop space and the moment we have one units wort of worktop either side of the hob and then 3 units worth the other side of the kitchen so really not practical at all.

All other ideas most welcome!

We get milk delivered and the fruit doesn't last long enough how ever much I seem to buy!

we've got two dishwashers - full size in kitchen and slimline in utility room. Have to admit it was more by accident than design, but it is useful, when one is full can use the other.
