Can you survive without a tumble dryer?

My tumble dryer has died I think and I was wondering if you can survive without one. I have always had one so cannot see how it will work without one. HELP

No radiators in my very tiny house... I have a really rubbish tumble drier (2nd hand from a friend 4+ yrs ago). I generally try to line dry, but since I have no central heating, it is either tumble dry or have damp clothes making an already cold house a depressing place to be.

I get a lot of frozen washing up here(NE Scotland) over the winter months.

Do you have an "airing" cupboard? If so you might be able to cope!

I've never had one,or a dishwasher.Lived on a boat until quite recently and have never bothered, only time it would be handy is for drying down filled things like pillows.I hang things up or put them on the line or the radiators.I think tumble driers tend to wear out clothes anyway.

Ive never had a tumble drier.
My current system is racks in the cellar. I leave the cellar heater on 24/7 in winter, and the door open. No other heaters on in the house.
Heats the house and dries teh clothes.

I had a tumble drier when we used cloth nappies.

All 3 out of nappies for ages; didn't use the thing for a good while then finally sold it at car boot last year.

So errr yes. I hang stuff out on the line from Feb - Nov and in between have it on racks in front of a good radiator.

Wash all thru the week so there's never loads IYSWIM. I also think a lot of us wash too often - kids' stuff unless dirty can mostly be worn twice (not underwear but jumpers, trousers, dresses).

Thanks all for your replies. I will NOT be replacing the tumble dryer any time soon so we will see how we manage. Threw out the airer last week tho as it had been in the garden over the winter so I may need to go buy a new one. Thanks.

I managed for 40 years without one until this week when my ds (9 months) has contracted some sicknes and diahroea virus. His bed clothes are constantly being dried at the moment. I couldn't keep up without it.

I have a washer dryer and never use the dryer bit, don't like it. They shrink your clothes and make them smell funny. Besides I love the look of washing on the line, very pleasing.

cruelladepoppins · 18/03/2010 19:03

Never had one. Line dry, racks in the boiler cupboard, woodburning stove (it's got a water jacket on top so it's not too burny hot) and also use the empty greenhouse in winter on a sunny day.

tootootired · 18/03/2010 23:07

We often don't use our tumble dryer from one week to the next as we also have a ceiling airer and outside line. The ceiling airer is over a radiator and far and away the best way to dry indoors. Things dry four times as fast as they do on the floor standing airer.

SpeedyGonzalez · 18/03/2010 23:08

Never had one. No plans to have one.

Never had a microwave, either. A dishwasher, though? Now that's something I definitely want.

SparkyToo · 19/03/2010 19:51

I only use ours for towels. I really do think towels need to be tumble-dried otherwise them dry like pieces of cardboard. That's it though. I'm sure you could survive without one in the short-term.

If I can manage without a tumbler with a terry-nappied baby in winter anyone can
