Can you survive without a tumble dryer?

My tumble dryer has died I think and I was wondering if you can survive without one. I have always had one so cannot see how it will work without one. HELP

I have a dishwasher, made of two hands and some washing up liquid.

campocaro · 16/03/2010 15:20

No. Gave mine away to a neighbour here when I moved to Spain, with proviso that I could use it if there was a wet patch. It's been fine 'til this year-3 months of rain-neighbour's track impassible. I resorted to the launderette's drying service. Sun's out now.

I love the smell of freshly washing clothes off of the washing line (in the Summer). I don't have a tumble dryer. You can easily survive without one!

Liz :-)

SOH yes I did thank you.

My dishwasher is fully manual. It is also pretty useful at other chores.

GrendelsMum · 16/03/2010 17:27

We have quite a big boiler cupboard under the stairs, so we have it kitted out for drying clothes in wet weather with clothes lines etc. Anything that doesn't fit in that goes on a clothes horse in wet weather.

Sunny days, things go out on the line.

frogetyfrog · 16/03/2010 17:30

There are 5 of us and we dont have a dishwasher or a tumble dryer. We manage fine.

justallovertheplace · 16/03/2010 17:30

I have lived in flats for more than 5 years with no garden or outside line. I had to hang all my washing (including washable nappies for a time)on airers inside and it was a pain in the arse. This January my grandma took pity and bought me a tumble dryer, and my god I love it. Don't see how I managed without it, it is so nice to be able to wash, dry and put away all on the same day.

sallyjaygorce · 16/03/2010 17:30

Never had one. We used to dry clothes on airers by th00e radiators in our flat and now have a garden with a washing line. There are 5 of us - loads of washing but never wished for a tumble dryer.

lucykate · 16/03/2010 17:31

we've never had a tumble drier. unless it's chucking it down with rain, the washing goes outside on the line.

frogetyfrog · 16/03/2010 17:31

Dont tumble driers just eat the electricity? Dont think I could afford it!

NoahAndTheWhale · 16/03/2010 17:32

I've never had a tumble drier and clothes always get dry.

justallovertheplace · 16/03/2010 17:33

There has been no difference in my electric bill since having a tumble dryer, but I use dot have my heating on to try and get my washing dry so I think it's all evened out iyswim. I agree with those sayign if you have a well ventilated spare room it's possible but we have a very small flat and had bedsheets slung over doors and airers taking up a whole corner of the living room

snickersnack · 16/03/2010 17:51

Rarely use it. Once last month when dd had been sick on three lots of bedding and it was raining. But we have lots of radiators, a washing line and a marvellous drying rack hanging from the kitchen ceiling so things get dry one way or another.

orienteerer · 16/03/2010 17:52

Yes, I've never had one (in recent years anyway).

Easily, but we've also got a pulley (Sheila's Maid/Laundry Maid/Maiden call it what you will) in the kitchen. You need pretty high ceilings though I think.

notevenamousie · 16/03/2010 17:59

Of course you can, it's just a luxury that eats money. I did cloth nappies without one too.

I have never had or even used a tumble dryer so of course you can survive without one.

snorkie · 16/03/2010 20:32

sfxmum · 16/03/2010 20:37

no tumble dryer and no microwave no dishwasher no problem
horrifies plenty of my friends

Wolfcub · 16/03/2010 20:38

We are currently surviving wihtout a tumble drier and have been since just before christmas when it blew up. It has been a bit of a struggle with the bad weather and the living room has been full of drying washing every day but with the better weather coming I can put washing out now so this will get much better. I won't be buying a new one - at least not for a year. The worst thing was when ds was vomiting for 24 straight hours and went through every bit of bedding he had and most of ours too but we survived.

101damnations · 16/03/2010 20:39

Never had one here either, even when w had 2 dcs under 2 and both in cloth nappies. We line dry either outside or under the carport. An airer near a radiator as a last resort.
