Dyson dead - do I get another one or is there a better option?

That my life has come to this on a Friday night...anyhow, the Dyson is more or less dead and pretty old. Dh has tried to fix it several
times but I think it's time for a new one. Is another Dyson the best option or is there a better (cheaper?) option anyone can recommend?

upright or pull along preference? asking as I have a shit hot pull along I can reccomend

CarGirl · 05/03/2010 23:02

miele miele miele miele, basic version is as good as the top of the range it just doesn't have fancy electronic controls and lots of different heads

muggglewump · 05/03/2010 23:03

I have a £50 Vax. It gets the bits off the carpet, is light, and has tools for the stairs, including a rotating brush.

I can't think what else you'd need but someone will be along soon to recommend a much dearer hoover, that does just the same.

What do you want your hoover to do, other than suck dirt off the carpet?

muggglewump · 05/03/2010 23:04

Ta da.

Miele.

I rest my case.

CarGirl · 05/03/2010 23:09

I had a vax previously it was crap

Busybean · 05/03/2010 23:20

I had a vax and it was the most crap thing ive ever owned, it never worked properly and after 15months and 3 trips back to the manufacturer for repair they finally gave in and store offered gift voucher for replacement.

after calling vax on one occasion was given appaling customer service and vowed i would never buy anything made by them again.

I have this
and its the best hoover ive ever owned. it also has the maximum air wattage that you can get in a hoover(level of suction) and the alternate head is great for pet (and human) hair.

addictedtolatte · 05/03/2010 23:23

miele here as well. it wins over the dyson anytime and its cheaper as well

thelunar66 · 05/03/2010 23:25

My vax was bought second hand in 1983 for 25 quid. it died last week

swampster · 05/03/2010 23:26

You can't beat a Henry in my opinion and the kids fight over using it so I can put my feet up while they do the hard work (in my dreams).

nigglewiggle · 05/03/2010 23:29

Miele here too

Housemum · 05/03/2010 23:42

I have drooled over the Miele for a long time and am doing my best to break the bloody Dyson (it's like a teen horror flick, no matter how much you beat it up it's still alive)

My only concern is the price of the bags - the rate I fill my Dyson up, I may as well spend the price of the cleaner on bloody bags! How often do you change them, and can you re-use them? (I remember my nan in the 70's getting as many uses as she could from her Hoover bags, even patching them up with sellotape!)

j0807bump · 05/03/2010 23:43

you cant do better than a henry. if it fits up the tube it will suck up anything and trust me you do not have to use bags with one.
i loooove my henry!!!

Joolyjoolyjoo · 05/03/2010 23:47

Funnily enough I posted similar last year when my Dyson animal died- the general consensus was miele cat and dog. So I did and definitely no regrets!! Great hoover (can't believe I just posted that!)

emsyj · 06/03/2010 16:17

Miele for me too.

We have changed the bag on ours probably 4 times the whole time we've owned it, but then we're not very houseproud!!! If you hoover up a lot then maybe every six months or so?? The bags are expensive but the actual cleaner will last for more or less always (we've had ours 6 years and counting, and it's been roundly abused having moved house 4 times, been dropped down the stairs more times than I can remember (all the way down from the top - thunk thunk thud) and used to hoover up DH's DIY mess. I wouldn't re-use the bags, they seal when you remove them anyway. The basic Miele cylinder is way cheaper than a Dyson and you won't have to repair or replace it for donkeys years so spend some of the money you'll save on the bags and you'll still save a fortune.

ooosabeauta · 06/03/2010 16:35

Miele here too - got an S5210 if we want to get geeky about it - and the geeks at Which? recommended it so I got it, but I think all Mieles are meant to be good. Bags are expensive, but I am a spendthrift so when it's full for the first couple of times I put on my rubber gloves and pull out the clods of grey carpety dust-bunny stuff .

If you are not that stingey you can get a non-Miele brand of bag which fits from Sainsbury's. Is an excellent, quiet vacuum which I love.

welshdeb · 06/03/2010 16:52

Have you tried the Dyson repair service. It may be repairable - no disrespect to your dh but he mught not be an expert or have access to dyson parts etc.

My Dyson blew up on me about a year ago, I phoned them and for £60 the man came out fixed it and gave me a new hose.

CountessDracula · 06/03/2010 16:56

Miele are SO much better and I have had both

CountessDracula · 06/03/2010 16:57

oh and I have never had a hoover worse than a dyson I don't think
Things broke off on a monthly basis.
They must have replaced most bits of it twice by the time it bit the dust!
NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE I would say

busymummy3 · 06/03/2010 17:18

I have had my Dyson since 2001 in that time I must have had at least 4 hoses replaced handle and extension metal pole thing, 6 months ago took it a local repairer as it kept cutting out every time cable moved where it goes into machine. now I need yet another hose. why do they split so easily always right at the top? DH thinks I am too heavy handed with it and that I try too hard to stretch it up the stairs but we have a normal 14 stair staircase which Dysons are supposed to cope with are they not ?
Any way was in process of ordering a new hose when spotted this thread . What I would like to ask is why go back to A vacuum cleaner with a bag ? thats one thing I did like about the Dyson - bagless do Miele not do a bagless vacuum cleaner?

TulipsInTheRain · 06/03/2010 18:49

We've had our dyson for over three years... we have 3 kids and five cats and it gets serious abuse.

It's broken for the first time this week... just the head though, we broke the catch that clips it onto the long tubey bit by repeatedly leaning it against the wall and slamming the tubey bit into it

already ordered a new one though so should be fine in a few days

Pancakeflipper · 06/03/2010 18:51

Sebo

But I'd have a Miele if Sebo didnt exist.

diydemon · 06/03/2010 18:52

Our Dyson died a few months ago. We replaced with a Miele Cat & Dog and it's brilliant - much, much better than the Dyson.

LilRedWG · 06/03/2010 18:54

Ours died - we paid for the service - basically EVERYTHING except case was replaced, so we had a new Dyson in an old body.

NumberOneEnemy · 06/03/2010 18:54

do not get a henry whatever you do
it comes out REALLY BAD in the which report.

I adore my tiny dyson 24 - easy to sroe easy to whizz around

LilRedWG · 06/03/2010 18:58

HERE is my thread from the time - seriously it is the best £55 I have ever spent (on a vacuum).
