Dyson dead - do I get another one or is there a better option?

That my life has come to this on a Friday night...anyhow, the Dyson is more or less dead and pretty old. Dh has tried to fix it several
times but I think it's time for a new one. Is another Dyson the best option or is there a better (cheaper?) option anyone can recommend?

I should have learned my lesson after the first Dyson I had that came free with DH. But stupidly I got another. When that one broke after a year or two I got a Miele cat and dog , which is excellent.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 06/03/2010 19:07

Parts currently broken on my Dyson DC08:

'Contact' head - Where the hose fits into the head the hose is disconnected.

Telescopic pole thing collapses of it's own accord so has duct tape round it.

Pipe disconnects where it goes into the main body of the hoover.

Clip popped off the front which holds the top of the dust drum on.

Can't lift it up by it's handle as the whole section the handle is on just lifts off.

Cord rewind won't rewind the last 3 feet of cable 80% of the time.

Would I get another? - Not on your nelly.

(Will be watching with interest for recommendations)

ah oyu need a 24
nothign broken - and i did have an 02 that DID break a lot

SparkyToo · 06/03/2010 19:19

We have a SEBO and find it very good (it's about 10 years old).

snickersnack · 06/03/2010 19:19

Thanks everyone - am impressed by the number, breadth and passion of the responses.

I do find manoeuvring the Dyson up the stairs tricky. And lots of ours is held together with tape and I can never get the stupid cable to wind round the back. We've had several bits replaced already - didn't know they did services. Will look in to that definitely. Don't really want to have to buy a new vacuum cleaner if I can avoid it, seems very wasteful.

Stupid question - if I don't have a cat or dog, and assuming that the Dyson can't be fixed, can I still buy a Miele Cat and Dog, or is that silly?!

did oyu register the dyson?
they are quite hot on that

brimfull · 06/03/2010 19:30

Henry is fucking crap I absolutely hate mine with a passion.

I am trying to decide what to get next as well but hate spending ££ on stuff liek this.

snickersnack · 06/03/2010 19:33

No, I almost certainly didn't register it. I'm totally rubbish at registering household appliances. Does that mean they won't service it even if I pay them? It obviously belongs to me, I wouldn't go and steal someone's knackered vacuum cleaner...

OK - Henry is out if a new one is required based on ggirl and NumberOneEnemy's testimony. dd will be gutted, she was v excited about the idea of a vacuum cleaner with eyes.

Miele definitely going to be the appliance of choice if Dyson is unfixable. It's all very exciting.

I have had a dyson DC05 for seven years with only one replacement part (changed steel extension pole for the aluminium one). Starting to feel now that I don't vacuum often enough .

DSis has a hotel, lesser hoovers crumble in her hands due to the workload. She uses a Sebo and an industrial grade Henry if it helps.

brimfull · 06/03/2010 19:39

I have a roomba you acn buy off me?
My house is not suited to it.

snickersnack · 07/03/2010 22:33

welshdeb - thank you! I looked on the support page and there was a "what to do if you've lost suction" link. Who knew you need to wash the filter (every three months apparently but I don't vacuum that often...). Anyhow, appears to be working just fine now. DH slightly shamefaced that his attempts to fix it were so clearly misdirected and I am happy that I didn't waste my Sunday and £150+ on a new one!!

Miele Cat & Dog here too... Has two big brush head things (IYSWIM) - one for normal, one for animals. I assume. I've never read the instructions but one has a paw on it!

I've had Hoovers, Dysons and Miele. Miele every time!

LilRedWG · 08/03/2010 11:41

I didn't register mine - I'm useless at stuff like that. They just asked me for the seriel number off the side.

hobbittoes · 08/03/2010 21:41

lovin' my sebo

jasper · 08/03/2010 22:08

sebo

clam · 08/03/2010 22:17

Sebo, Sebo, Sebo!

CMOTdibbler · 08/03/2010 22:21

Miele cat and dog here too.

Our Dyson blew up, and we did get it repaired (no need to register and they were v efficient), but got fed up of it's lack of cat hair moving. Miele is amazing

JoCoolBeans · 08/03/2010 23:16

I have a Vax wet and dry, I list it as one of the best things I've ever bought - right up there with the tumble dryer. I've had many shitty hoovers, i think you get what you pay for when it comes down to it. i personally couldn't live without my Vax 6131. I've had no bother with it.

But i was surprised when a friend of mine decided to try out her Dyson against her sisters Henry last week. She says she was shocked, the Henry was far better!

Pity you can't try before you buy with these things

SparklyJules · 08/03/2010 23:19

Henry! We replaced our Dyson with one and I don't look back! Love ours, and I even talk to it when I'm hoovering - "come on Henry, into the kitchen now..." - he's such a happy looking little chap!

emsyj · 09/03/2010 13:37

My Miele isn't a cat and dog (although we do have 2 cats as it happens...) and it's still brill. Think the cat and dog one was a bit more expensive. Ours is a very basic one with a black cylinder body.

whiskyplease · 15/03/2010 09:09

Dyson (upright grey/yellow) does a good job if you change the filters regularly. But, the worst job in the house is emptying the cylinder - and that includes cleaning the oven). Has to be done outside and finished off with a handbrush to clean the cone thing. Then remember you forgot to get a carrier bag to put the gunge in. Always feel like a shower after that job!
