Anybody NOT like their memory foam mattress?

AllBuggiedOut · 24/02/2010 09:55

DH & I bought a latex memory mattress from John Lewis before Christmas. In the shop it seemed really comfortable, the first night I slept on it was fantastic, but then I started waking in the night uncomfortable with lower back pain. Friends said not to worry, it takes a while to get used to memory foam, but 3 months later although I'm not waking in the night any more, in the mornings my lower back is very painful. Has anyone else had this experience? I've phoned John Lewis to ask for advice and they're sending somebody round to check that the mattress isn't faulty, but I doubt it is; I think it just doesn't suit me . Don't know what to do as we can't really afford to buy another mattress.

Had a proper memory foam one and we put up with it for a year as it cost so much but both DH and I didn't like it and it used to really hurt my back. It was even worse when pregnant as I could hardly get out of the bed!

Our current mattress is part memory foam part spring based mattress which I think is great but my DH doesn't like. It's so difficult buying a mattress as they normally feel fine until you actually spend a whole night in them. I was seduced by our current one as we had to lie on a special mattress which analysed our pressure points and suggested appropriate mattresses for us.

mrsfred · 25/02/2010 20:53

I don't know if this helps, but when we bought our tempur mattress, the salesman told us that you had to 'activate' it before sleeping on it. He told us to walk up and down the length and across the width of it first. I have no idea why this should make a difference!

I have problems with my neck and back and wouldn't be without my memory foam mattress now. I really notice the difference if I sleep in a different bed for any reason.

Has the inspector been round yet AllBuggiedOut?

I hope that they can sort your mattress out for you. There is nothing worse than waking up in the morning aching!

Good luck! :-)

I'm the same mrsfred - can't sleep comfortably in any other bed now.

We're even thinking of buying the same mattress for our static caravan [saddos - on mattress and caravan front]

Joolyjoolyjoo · 26/02/2010 01:01

We tried the topper thing, and it is now squished under the bed!

Too blummin hot! and we discovered that Dh moves around a lot in his sleep which is difficult when you have created a trough to lie in (but funny to watch )

ThatVikRinA22 · 26/02/2010 02:07

and i love mine. (but previously to getting it had spent 10 years the cheapest of cheapy cheap mattresses that just about crippled DH!)

mine is a health beds one with sprung pocketed base and memory foam top and bottom - i love it!

JL inspector coming on Tuesday. Will report back! Thanks for your interest all.

Just wanted to add my voice to the 'antis' - we spent £1600 (I KNOW) on a Tempur Pedic mattress and it crippled me. My lower back just went to pieces. In the end we had to write it off (put it on guest bed so they can suffer, might encourage shorter visits) and bought a Dunlopillo latex, quite firm, which is ace. Hope John Lewis comes up trumps for you.

PDR · 26/02/2010 17:08

I HATE our memory foam mattress but dare not say anything to DH as it was me who insisted on buying the thing

doggus · 26/02/2010 21:02

PDR - me too. I had to 'fess up though as I could barely walk . I also 'forced' him to upgrade our car from a Citroen Berlingo which was ace but very very uncool to a Volkswagen Touran and now I hate that too. Am keeping quiet on the car since the mattress incident.

vannah · 26/02/2010 21:27

we bought ours from JL too, cost so much! But felt we couldnt return it as it had been used- 3 times! So we sold it on ebay, got a fair price

AllBuggiedOut · 27/02/2010 14:44

That's good to know Vannah - did you deliver it when you sold?

This thread has just made me realise that my dredful lower back problems started around the time we got the latex mattress. Stupidly I never made the connection before.
I hate it because of the heat retention.

goes off to shop for new mattress

AllBuggiedOut · 25/05/2010 14:43

Update - John Lewis have sent 2 inspectors round (the first said he know nothing about mattresses ) and haven't found a fault with our mattress. I've had endless correspondence with them in which we've been given conflicting information about how to choose a mattress, and whether it would have made a difference if I'd contacted them within 28 days of our purchase. Upshot is that they're giving us £300 which we will put towards a replacement. I will try and sell the original but don't know how easy that will be. But at least I now have a way forward. Can't believe it's taken this long to sort it out

Downdog · 25/05/2010 14:57

Don't like ours either - idea seemed great but I want some bounce please.

Would love to get rid of it but can't afford to replace at the moment.

OH hates it more than I do.

AllBuggiedOut · 25/05/2010 17:02

I'd heard nothing but praise for them before we bought ours; it's so disappointing isn't it?

OP posts:
Downdog · 27/05/2010 15:01

It is disappointing. I did 'research' before buying one and like you heard nothing but praise for them. Still, although we may not like it, at lesat it hasn't casued us back pain etc like some of the other MN'ers ..... yet!

WhyDoesFoamMatressEvenExist · 22/06/2015 15:15

Same

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 22/06/2015 15:22

I have a Tempur mattress , not a topper so it's all memory foam. It took at least 3 months for my back to stop hurting and now o can't sleep on anything else!

printmeanicephoto · 23/01/2016 15:34

I find ours comfy but far too hot in summer - but ours is memory foam throughout.

Fluffy24 · 23/01/2016 15:40

IKEA do a try-it-for-90-days guarantee, I'm not sure of the exact details but in the shop they said that if we didn't like it we could change it for another.

They actually seemed to have a really good range...

BitOutOfPractice · 23/01/2016 16:01

I had a memory foam mattress topper and ditched it. Hated it. I sweated like a pig on it (tmi?) and found it hard to turn over on it somehow

Chalkhillblu3 · 01/05/2016 08:31

A late addition to the discussion.... I ended up in A&E not long ago my lower back pain was so bad. I think memory foam contributed to this because of the immobility in bed it forced on me. The doctor in hospital warned me against turning over in bed by turning the top half of the body and following with the legs. But this was exactly what the memory foam had been forcing me to do because you sink into it. She told me in needed to roll over 'all at once'. Now I am back on a sprung mattress I notice this is way easier. I now sleep on a john lewis ortho 1200 with a fiver filled topper and my back is so much better. Please note that there is almost no research on beds that's not sponsored by manufacturers. Therefore health claims are usually downright lies. Manufacturers have spun a mythology around memory foam just because it was invented by NASA. There is NO scientific proof of it being better for you.
