Where am I going wrong? Everyone tells me to shake out wet clothes so they don't need to be ironed... but...

NOt sure tbh I follwed a routine of folding and hangin in summer when I could line dry and it worked beautifully, since the cold weather and drying indoors it's not working!!

I'm the same. Also apparantly if you fold warm clothes from the tumble drier they are supposed to not need ironing - that never works for me either.

I did wonder if I had the spin on too high on the washing machine (is it spinning too much water out and thus leaving the clothes ready crumpled iyswim)

ConnorTraceptive · 16/02/2010 14:25

I know you do need to try and get them out the machine ASAP once the cycle has finished. I suspect I'm not folding with as much care as I should

I reduced the spin on my machine as I was getting holes in my clothes (not relevant to ironing i know!)

ConnorTraceptive · 16/02/2010 14:28

Yes I think folding is the key and leaving them folded whilst wet for a good hour or two (or overnight if you are lazy like me

ConnorTraceptive · 16/02/2010 14:30

Ok hang on let's back track here I think our methods may be different. I shake out wet clothes, fold them whilst wet (folded very neatly seams lining up and all that) leave folded pile of wet washing for an hour or two then hang them to dry.

megonthemoon · 16/02/2010 14:31

Does folding them when wet not make them mildewy? Or do you unfold them after?

tethersend · 16/02/2010 14:32

The secret is to lower your standards

They're only folded for a couple of hours and then I hang them to dry as normal (unfolded) They've never smelt even ones left over night tbh

tether makes an excellent point! You're never going to get a starched and pressed look with this method, but it keeps the iron in the cupboard!

bibbitybobbityhat · 16/02/2010 14:36

Yes, don't expect them to look like ironed clothes .

I shake vigorously and pull all the seams flat before hanging up.

When dry I fold things really carefully and stack everything up on the ironing board, say overnight, with something heavier on top like a pile of towels or sheets.

By the time I've done all that I might as well have ironed really .

But I detest ironing.

ConnorTraceptive · 16/02/2010 14:41

If something comes out the wardrobe looking awfull then I will wizz an iron over it but i refuse to stand ironing for hours anymore.

blimey, I'm thinking ironing might be simpler than all the folding tbh . I do hate ironing though (although buying a nice new pink iron seems to have made it easier).

YanknCock · 16/02/2010 15:30

what is all this folding stuff? I shake very vigorously, put straight on to hangers to dry, and smooth out while on hanger. I spose it might depend on the fabrics. Most everything we have comes out ok with no folding involved.

nomorecake · 16/02/2010 23:12

don't let washed clothes sit in the machine.

firm vigorous flick-type shake. hang on indoor airer. fine for t-shirts and jeans.
shirts and smart clothes will have to be ironed.

CarGirl · 16/02/2010 23:19

reduced the spin/try a lesser cycle.

You want a synthetic cycle as it has a more gentle spin and additionally select a spin of 900 max.

No need to fold just hang and straighten.

Linen and 100% cotton may still need ironing so don't buy them

ppeatfruit · 19/02/2010 09:23

hello everyone!! My dh has always spouted the hang up immed. thing and it doesn't work as far as i'm concerned!! BUT i have just started using one of the laundry balls and It IS AMAZING!!

I don't need to iron my jeans any more !!although dh who does most of his washing is not convinced..

nickytwotimes · 19/02/2010 09:30

I have tried all the non-ironing tricks, but to no avail.

I think you either have to accept slightly creased clothes, or take up ironing (or in my case, get dh to do it as he is better at it).

CarGirl · 19/02/2010 10:27

laundry balls????

sugartits · 19/02/2010 10:35

I don't think you can ever reach the no iron holy grail. However I never iron, jeans, t-shirts, knitwear, school shirts etc. The trick for me is firstly don't leave the clothes in the washing machine after the was for too long (more than an hour). Then shake out each item as you put it in the tumble dryer, uncrumble twisted legs on jeans. Most important step is to remove from the tumble dryer within a few minutes of it ending. Take each item out, shake, fold and then smooth down with your hands.

Job done.

Linen items, shirts are about all I iron.

MoChan · 19/02/2010 10:49

I only find the shaking thing really works for smallish pairs of cord trousers. They're the only thing that doesn't look a wee bit crumpled. Just a wee bit crumpled is generally good enough for me, though, because I am a rubbish housekeeper very busy person.
