How often is your heating on and at what temp?

Buddleja · 20/12/2009 22:51

I'm in constant battle with DH with the amount of time the heating is on in our house (and what the temp it's at!!)

Wondering what the norm is? Currently I have it coming on a 6.30 (we're up at 7) and off again at 8. Then on again at 5 and off at 10.

It's thermostatically controlled so isn't even on at those times. DH is forever turning in ton (and it 'on' not on the timer) and ramping up the temp - because apparently putting on a jumper doesn't make you warmer (?) I've downstairs set at 20C and upstairs set at 18C (which I think is quiet warm!)

Hr in the morning, hr at night before DC go to bed.
I do put it on for a little bit if it gets very cold during the day but that isn't very often.

Thermostat on each radiator so i don't bother with them and just have it on those times it is needed.

Kristingle · 20/12/2009 23:07

ours is at 16, our house takes a long time to heat up and cool down

DaisymooSteiner · 20/12/2009 23:08

Our boiler's broken, so 'never' is how often it's on at the moment, brrrrr.

When the boiler is working it comes on at 6.00-7.30am, 5-7pm and 9-10pm. Thermostat set to 18C. We might put it on for an odd extra hour if we're home.

mumblecrumble · 20/12/2009 23:08

No idea of temperature.... (dial is at one o clock which is the highest I 'allow')

I am having a related dilema - I currently have it go on and off for short periods of time however was reading an eco thing that said it was better to keep it constantly warmish (not hot but not freezing) all th tim...

Ours is on:

6.30 - 7.15
5.30 - 7.00
8.30 - 10.00

boost for half an hour in the afternoon if we are tired and freezing....

sherby · 20/12/2009 23:12

ours is on 24hrs but set at 19c

although the thermostat is crap, but DH won't fit a new one and says it works fine

would you believe he is a gas heating engineer

bibbitybobbitysantahat · 21/12/2009 00:07

Ours is on 8am to 11pm atm as it is so spectacularly cold here. We have it at about 23.

Buddleja · 21/12/2009 10:15

"would you believe he is a gas heating engineer"

Yes i can - as they say a cobbler'c children never have shoes!!! I grew up with a dad who was a builder so I know this (can) ring true!

For the last few days, it's been on constantly at 18C. Usually, it comes on at 6.30am 'til 8.30, then 12-1pm, and then 4-10pm. I hit the boost button whenever it's cold.

purplepeony · 21/12/2009 10:33

At present it is on all day. It is timed to come on from 7am- 9am ish, but I over ride that and keep it on at around 20C all day.

purplepeony · 21/12/2009 10:34

It's not on overnight- goes off at 11pm.

RamblingRosa · 21/12/2009 10:54

I've always wondered how often other people have their heating on for and I always suspected I was really stingy about it but it looks like I'm quite average (on from 6am to 8am then on again at 4.30pm to 10ish). I had it on more at the weekend because it was just stupidly cold and it's not a well insulated house. DD's lips were turning blue so I caved in!

Is it just me or do other people's houses always seem warmer than your own?

emsyj · 21/12/2009 16:23

Blimey, I think 18 degrees is really cold!!! Judging solely by the temperature control in my previous office, which showed the temperature (now in open plan so no idea what temp is). I would have my office temp on 24 degrees. Our heating at home is on 7 til 8am and then 5pm to 10pm, don't know what the thermostat is set to. We also have a log burner that is on whenever DH is home (as I don't know how to set/light it ) Our house is literally 50 yards from the sea so the wind really gets up in the winter and if we're at home all day I have the heating on the whole time.

TillyMintSpy · 21/12/2009 16:26

Ours is on all day at the moment, but usually 6.30 - 7.30 then 4.30 - 9.30 when we are at work. At 19 - 20 degrees.

AMerryScot · 21/12/2009 16:27

We have our heating on all the time. I set the thermostat to around 18C in the winter and 14C in the summer.

FolornHope · 21/12/2009 16:28

all day atm - i findwe have it lower then

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 21/12/2009 16:31

Ours is not thermostatically controlled but we have it on from 7am-9am then 5pm-9.30pm and the house tempreture is usually between 18c and 20c. I will sometimes have it on for a bit during the day if I feel it chilly after putting on more layers or if DS lips start turning blue! I preser the bedrooms to be a little cooler between 16c and 18c.

The bathroom, which is out on a limb is bloody freezing, the heated towel rail does exactly what it says it does and leaves the rest of the bathroom like a fridge. The temp this morning was 6c! 6c! My fridge is warmer than that!

oopsandbabyJesusinacoconut · 21/12/2009 16:33

Ours is on thermostat control from 7am to 9pm at 19degrees and off all night as we tend to sleep with the windows open regardless of season. I occasionally turn the temp up to 21/22 when DD gets up from her nap as she sits here shivering until she is properly awake.

suiledonne · 21/12/2009 16:37

Very at some of the replies. Ours is on for an hour before we get up and an hour after and 2 hours when the dds go to bed.

Just checked the temperature here. The bedrooms are 12 degrees and the living area where we spend the day is 16 degrees.

Not warm but we are used to it. Doesn't seem to bother the dds at all.

Personally I would like it to be 18 but we can't afford the oil to keep it on all the time.

Hulababy · 21/12/2009 16:38

At the moment it is on all the time we are in the house. It clicks on around 6am and goes off about 10-10:£0pm IIRR. Infact I left it on whilst I went out earlier, so the hosue stayed warm.

The thermostat is set to about 16 degrees on the ground floor. This keeps the upper two floors toasty warm - sometimes a bit too warm, and we have to turn it down. If we are using downstairs - proper dining room down there we ahve to turn heating up a bit for an hour beforehand.

TracyK · 21/12/2009 16:51

I only have mine on for half an hour in the morning - I find aftr my shower I'm boiling hot and switch it off.

It's on fairly constantly from 3 - 9pm at 18 ish. Though I'm going to cut back as I just had a letter from eon saying they were doubling their monthly DD!!

TillyMintSpy · 21/12/2009 18:43

Su

How hardy you are - it is on 20 here (has been all day) and I have 2 jumpers on

BooHooo · 21/12/2009 18:45

On around 25 all day from 5.30 off at night

chopstheduck · 21/12/2009 18:47

Reading this thread makes me feel cold!!

Ours is currently set around 23 during the day and 18 at night. I'd prefer it cooler at night but dp moans. I turn it off at night if the temps aren't too close to freezing.
