Should I get a dishwasher?

We are hopefully getting a new kitchen in the New Year, and dh has mentioned getting a dishwasher. We've never had one and up until now,he has muttered about them not being worth having -but he doesn't do the washing up,so he would say that.Do they help keep your kitchen tidier/clutterfree? I'm very tempted, but it would mean moving the washing machine into an outbuilding so we had room for it,so want to consider it properly. Are they timesaving or do you end up arguing about not filling/emptying it?

This thread is very old now, but if you’ve landed here looking for up-to-date advice on choosing a new appliance, we’ve recently refreshed our best dishwasher guide with plenty of high-quality, Mumsnetter-approved models, including advice on whether it's the right choice for your home. We hope it’s helpful.

Absolutely, definitely, without one minute's hesitation: yes, get a dishwasher. Not only do they save you hours of time washing up, they also enable to keep your kitchen free of dirty clutter/drying clutter and they clean your dishes/pots/pans far better than handwashing does. Your whole kitchen will be much easier to keep clean.

Definitely get a dishwasher. Aside from the reduced clutter they give a more hygienic wash - reaching temperatures that you could never achieve with a hand wash. Also, in case you were worried about the environment they actually reduce the amount of water you use (and your bill if you're on a water meter). I actually wrote a blog about the benefits of dishwashers recently lol - see Kitchenkate blog.

I'm certainly getting one! Putting the washing machine in an outbuilding isn't a problem,as it is attached to the house and I don't have to go outside to reach it.Just got to get a water supply to it and plumb it in.

Oh,I'm all excited-all being well, not only will I have a spanking new kitchen,I'll also be able to keep it looking tidy and uncluttered too.

How big is your family? Consider a small-width dishwasher (45cm wide). There are 3 of us and we find it OK.

hairygodmother · 26/11/2009 14:20

I love love love mine, we didn't have one until about a year ago, it's the most fabulous invention ever (ours is a Bosch, it's brilliant). My lovely mum bought ours for us. Yes, you will argue with dh over stacking it etc - generally our arguments discussions revolve around how I can't get dh to stack it properly. But so worth it for not having to wash up. It's fine with non-stick pans too.

If it came down to it and someone told me to choose between dh and the dishwasher, I'd be hard pushed to make a decision

crankytwanky · 26/11/2009 14:33

Yes.

Servalan · 26/11/2009 15:32

I didn't think we needed a dishwasher until DH bought one. Love, love love it now! Wouldn't be without it!!

bogie · 26/11/2009 15:32

YES I couldn' tlive without mine now!

TheInvisibleManDidIt · 26/11/2009 15:36

YES!!!

Although you will become ridiculously dependant on it and forget what to do with the dishes should it ever breakdown (not speaking from personal experience, you understand! )

FuriousGeorge · 26/11/2009 20:53

Ha,I've just told dh about this thread and all the messages about how fab dishwashers are.Hairygodmother,my lovely mum has offered to buy me one too.She says she doesn't know how I can work two jobs plus all the housework ect without one.Bless her!

Oh god yes! YES! YES!

Ponders · 26/11/2009 20:56

Kitchen is not the best or logical place for a washing machine anyway, unless there's absolutely nowhere else

FuriousGeorge · 26/11/2009 20:59

Very true Ponders. When I was little, ours was in the bathroom-very logical-you took off your dirty clothes to have a bath/shower and put them straight in the machine.

I got my first dishwasher last week.

I worship it like a god. We kneel in front of it, offering it votive offerings of salt and rinse aid. It has brought me happiness beyond all compare. I cannot believe I have lived for 34 years without one.

ps. anyone know how to stop them smelling?

FuriousGeorge · 26/11/2009 22:08

He knows when he's beaten,MmeLindt
Can you all use your collective will to get him to finish the bathroom now, please?
