How do you keep your shower screen clean and water-mark free?

We've just had a new clear showerscreen fitted and I want to start as I mean to go on, and keep the limescale/water marks to a minimum.

In my last house I had the same shower screen and I used shower spray after most uses but the limescale/water marks were dreadful and I could never get rid of them. Any advice greatfully received.

What is it about Cillit Bang? I bought a bottle of the stuff and I might as well have saved my cash. I live in the Chilterns with water from a chalk aquifer so all the usual methods simply don't work.
The only thing that makes any kind of impact is (yes, I know...) harpic limscale-busting loo cleaner! Probably because it's got more acid in it that the usual things. And even that doesn't shift all the marks... but as long as I rinse it all off properly after leaving for an hour with the window open, and make sure I wear gloves, it at least lets me feel I've a fighting chance of being able to see through the screen!

(not helped either by having mirrors over the bath which also need descaling!)

i always just accepted the limescale/water mark on the shower screen but my cleaner was having none of it. she got us a squeedgee and told me to use it every time we had a shower! my immediate reaction (in my head) was no way, but gave it a go and the difference is incredible.

even dh does it, even when he is rushing out the door... i think once you get used to it being sparkly you want to keep it that way.

you do have to do it as soon as you turn the water off, quick squeedgee all over whilst you are still in the shower. it only takes a second, top to bottom. Don't let the water dry on the screen.

then limelite or one of those anti-limescale cleaners once a week

e-cloths brilliant too.

Combination of Shower Spray (Mr muscle) and squeegee here

I have looked at those eCloths, but so expensive. Tesco do some glass cleaning cloths that are also microfibre and also very good, so I have been using those instead for mirrors and such like.

bruddy syringe broke didn't it

patsy42 · 29/09/2010 18:35

If you can't be bothered with cleaning constantly there's a company that can arrange it for you - and puts a non-stick coat on the glass. Now my shower is all clean and sparkly with no effort, yay!
Depends where you live as they just started up but great idea and fab result. Cost £80 but I don't have to buy any more products and it's no effort now...

i use 'Fairy' dish washing liquid ( or any brand really )and it works for me!

SweetnessAndShite · 30/09/2010 08:13

I live in a very hard water area and had let my shower door get very watermarked. I used Domestos zero lomescale toliet cleaner on the glass. Just wiped on with a cloth and left for a bit then washed off use gloves though). It came up really well and now I maintain with shower spray which seems to do the trick though not perfect.

Winedine69me · 30/09/2010 13:36

I use some old newspaper and a glass cleaner spray. Also works on windows :)

nameymcnamechange · 30/09/2010 13:41

All this hard work, expense and chemicals! Am so very glad we have a shower curtain Grin.

VegasVicky · 02/10/2010 13:14

We live in a hard water area and get a horrid build up of lime scale & water marks on our shower screen.
I bought a squeegee and that helps a bit but after a while the watermarks etc get to yucky.
I've found that Wilkinson's "Wilko Bathroom cleaner" is fantastic and far better than cillit bang etc.
It's also great for using on the kitchen sink & drainer area - my MIL thought we'd had a new sink installed!!

VegasVicky · 02/10/2010 13:15

PS this is where i got our squeegee from - looks quite nice too :)

We live in a hard water area. Method Ylang Ylang shower spray is fab. Really works brilliantly and is a natural product to boot :)

Cleaned DS shower screen in rented flat with hobrite ( generally used for ceramic hobs ) came up a treat. don't think it had ever been cleaned.

Marion12 · 11/05/2015 09:44

I mix a solution of water and toilet cleaner (25% toilet cleaner, 75% water) (I used the W5, Lidl own brand), combined to a washing up sponge, then dry with a glass cloth, it works a treat. my shower is as new.

HelenF350 · 11/05/2015 13:16

Clean with a 50/50 mix of water and white vinegar with a good squeeze of washing up liquid. I put mine in a spray bottle for easy application. Use a squeegee after showers to minimise cleaning required.

MsAspreyDiamonds · 11/05/2015 19:18

Make a 50/50 mix of white vinegar & washing up liquid plus a teaspoon of salt. Spray, leave for 10 minutes before washing off with a rough cloth then rinse off and squiggle wipe dry.

I've been doing this for three months now and it's been brilliant, I live in a very hard area and I can see through the glass now.

badg3r · 11/05/2015 19:40

Another vote for squeegee after every use, and viakal once a week.

polkadotdelight · 11/05/2015 19:46

I spray it with Tescos Shower Shine (cheaper!) and use the Karcher window vacuum. We get loads of condensation on the windows in winter so we bought the Karcher for that.

BradHoppo · 09/08/2017 14:00

I've just had a new clear showerscreen with soft cotton wet clothes.

GeneandFred · 10/08/2017 00:05

OK this way works fab for us and after 2 years our shower cubicle looks brand new.

After every shower spray inside shower, tiles and glass doors with Method daily shower spray, leave for 5 mins and then squeegee excess water off. Leaving the spray on the tiles and shower hose and head.

Once a week I do a full clean out of shower. Spray method cleaner all over inside of shower and get a scrubbing brush and scrub tiles to get any yellow bits off. Get a toothbrush and work it under the seal at bottom. Dry inside with a clean towel and buff silver bits with a microfiber cloth and also squeegee dry the doors. Clean outside of doors with water spray and e cloth and buff silver bits with microfibre cloth. Check seal at bottom with toothbrush.
