How do you keep your shower screen clean and water-mark free?

whatsthetimemrwolf · 17/09/2009 11:41

We've just had a new clear showerscreen fitted and I want to start as I mean to go on, and keep the limescale/water marks to a minimum.

In my last house I had the same shower screen and I used shower spray after most uses but the limescale/water marks were dreadful and I could never get rid of them. Any advice greatfully received.

I use Method shower spray when I am still in the shower (having turned the water off). We live in a very limey area but no streaks here!

ADifferentMe · 21/09/2009 16:23

DS has a hotel with 13 bedrooms - therefore 13 shower screens. She swears by Mr Muscle Multi Task for bathrooms. I've only found it in Waitrose but it's fantastic.

Fizzylemonade · 21/09/2009 19:02

We squeegee ours daily, then I spray it with Ecover Limescale remover (as recommended by Which magazine)about once a week. We live in Yorkshire so have lots of limescale build up.

Rinse off ecover and e cloth.

I swear by e cloths for polishing glass and mirrors.

fin54 · 21/09/2009 19:43

A wipe over with baby wipes cleans the shower glass

BonsoirAnna · 21/09/2009 19:45

Clean it with an e-cloth and a really good shower/bath cleaner (Cillit Bang is great) at least every 5/6 uses.

HarlotOTara · 21/09/2009 19:48

White vinegar is the best for removing water marks particularly if a bit entrenched or one of those cloths by vileda for use after every shower. Live in a very hard water area and limescale is a real bugbear of mine.

posieparker · 21/09/2009 19:49

I use newspaper or a glass cleaner (like a tea towel), first I spray/squirt any cleaner (from Cif to windowlene) with normal cloth give it a wipe and then either wipe off until dry with wet/dry newspaper or a glass cloth. I also have a glass wipe, like window cleaners have but a mini version. I live in Bristol and so lots of limescale.

smittenkitten · 21/09/2009 19:49

i second the squeegee (DP thinks I'm obsessed), but i insist on it after every use and then clean normally every week. no probs with streaks or limescale, though I don't live in a hard water area.

Toppy · 21/09/2009 20:06

I use two things which has kept out screen in the same condition as the day we installed it. Amazing given London's limescale issues

1 - Ikea sells a window cleaners rubber thingy which is about 12 inches wide (like the thing you do car windscreens with) which is brilliant

2 - Shower Shine spray - although I hardly use this now I have the rubber windscreen thing. It is brilliant for keeping the shower head limescale free. If you do a quick squirt up at the shower head all the water that collects in the head once you have turned the tap off comes pouring out. I have not had to descale for months. Just remember to run the shower for a couple of seconds before getting in next time in case the stuff is full of chemicals

BosomForAPillow · 21/09/2009 20:18

I would rather have a streaky screen than have to shower somewhere that smells of vinegar.

Bath power

whatsthetimemrwolf · 22/09/2009 07:12

Thanks very much everyone. I have no excuse to have a grubby showerscreen now, do I! .

I've just had a new shower room done and despite my request for an "anti limescale" coated shower screen the plumber installed a normal one. Grrrrrh.
I have just been watching a video clip on how to clean a shower screen and think it must be too good to be true. I will definitely try it though.

TrillianAstra · 23/07/2010 10:33

We don't. Our overly optimistic landlord installed a clear shower screen in a hard water area (when he was living here). It now looks frosted. We'll scrub it when we move out o fcourse, but it is a very hard wtaer area.

Lynli · 23/07/2010 10:50

The old fashioned pink windolene.

Buy a shower curtain and throw it over it so the screen doesn't get wet.

Or shower over it with very hot water and dry with a chamois leather

Lucy85 · 23/07/2010 14:07

Squegee and viakal.

2kids2dogsandahorse · 24/07/2010 14:00

And the little plastic squishy thing that runs along the bottom of the screen and the top of the bath? How the hell do you get that clean? Ours has a hole running right along it and its full of gunk really seriously disgusting looking gunk. I can do the screen easy peasy but this plastic squishy thing is doing my head in cos I just can't get the gunk out of it

midnightraven3 · 24/07/2010 18:29

when your shower screen is dry & clean
get a cloth and some car wax
wax your screen, and your mirror
buff off as you would using it on a car
soap scum etc will not build up, and water will run right off

and your bathroom mirror wont steam up

makes me whe people smear their hands over a steamed up mirror

i never use any products like cilit bang etc

d992bcf · 24/07/2010 18:38

We have very hard water so we always dry ours with a small soft towel after showering. It's as good as new after 2 years!

RunforFun · 24/07/2010 18:41

I'm a fan of white vinegar too.

NomDePlume · 24/07/2010 18:48

I clean it weekly using a glass cleaner and the family uses a rubber squeegee thing after every shower to remove the majority of the water residue. It keeps the watermarks down to a bare minimum. Squeegee was less than a quid from Ikea.

In fact, here it is!

pippop1 · 26/07/2010 00:30

Ooooh midnightraven does that really work? Whenever anyone has a shower I say "don't forget to wipe". No one does it as well as me of course and I love going on holiday and not wiping (I'm sad I know).

Can I ask how long the wax lasts? How often do you have to re-wax? e.g. every ten showers or what?

SpottyMuldoon · 26/07/2010 00:46

I've got a shower screen over the bath and the seal is gunked up but it's possible to slide it off to clean. Not that I have bothered but I know it comes off. You can also buy replacement seals.

2kids2dogsandahorse · 26/07/2010 08:47

I've found an old syringe from when the dog had some medicine I'm going to fill it with limelite and squirt it down this stupid hole along the stupid seal. Only a man would be stupid enough to design a shower screen seal with a sodding hole right along it for no reason

Petal4 · 26/07/2010 09:01

I use the eCloth for a year now and the glass looks as new. There is a white cloth in the pack which you use wet (no nasty chemicals needed) and then you use the blue cloth to wipe it dry. You wouldn't believe how sparkly the glass gets after. I use it for the mirrors as well and did not need to buy any glass or mirror cleaning products for a long time. This is the cheapest and best option. not to mention the environment. But that is a different story.
