fragranced candles

Hi everyone,

Just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on some good quality fragranced candles?

I usually use Yankee large jar candles but find them so hard to burn, I follow all the usual instructions but still some of them tunnel and never reach a full wax pool. Got fed up of buying them and then a found a fab candle called Swan Creek but these are really hard to get in the UK.

Have had a good search on google to try to find another brand of good quality highly fragranced candles but cant seem to find any, lots of American sites come up and they look fab but their shipping charges are so expensive.

Just wondered if anyone knew of any good ones apart from Yankee?

Jo Malone are good.

EleanoraBuntingCupcake · 06/09/2009 18:29

everyone on mumsnet make their own! i suspect laurie will be along in a minute to expand

fairiesandcupcakes · 06/09/2009 18:31

Yes have seen them but they are quite expensive, there is a seller on ebay that makes soy candles and some of her scents are like the Jo Malone candles (or so she says)but at half the price but again not sure what the candles are actually like, was thinking of giving them a go.

use essential oils? or just burn essential oils in an oil burner?

fairiesandcupcakes · 06/09/2009 18:37

Yes have got an oil burner but find i have to keep topping it up all the time, I like the large jars as they last for ages and you can usually just light them and leave them to burn for a few hours. I do sometimes use the tarts in my oil burner but mostly I prefer using the large jar candles.

With regards to them being bad for you thats why I was thinking of switching to soy candles.

I was pleased with some Johm Lewis candles I bought. Delicious scent and a lot cheaper than Jo Malone.

fairiesandcupcakes · 06/09/2009 18:48

ok many thanks. do they come in a jar?

Yes I've made some recently following on from the thread on here. Used soy wax and they were really easy to make. Found Lime & Grapefruit gave a lovely fragrance but DD and I are still experimenting.

I still love Jo Malone though.

[[http://www.woodwickcandleshop.co.uk/ woodwick] candles are really nice and not too expensive

Lilyloo · 06/09/2009 19:53

woodwick

fairiesandcupcakes · 06/09/2009 19:56

Hi, yes seen the woodwick ones and was thinking of trying them, my local shop have them at 20% off at moment. Do they give off a strong fragrance like Yankee?

With regards to making your own, I have just found a thread on here, was thinking I might try it, did yours give off a strong fragrance? How do you know how much oil to put in them?

30% fragrance oil to wax gives a good strong but not overpowering smell. They are easy (if slightly messy to make). Soooo much cheaper as well. Obviously you've got the upfront cost of buying everything but it does seem to last for ages.

Rough working out was around £2.90 per candle I think. Depending on how big the candle, how expensive the oil used of course.

sazm · 06/09/2009 20:16

my sister does partylite, the candles are fab,

ilovemydogandmrobama · 06/09/2009 20:22

St Eval. They are made in Cornwall.

fairiesandcupcakes · 06/09/2009 21:10

Has anyone tried the milkhouse creamery candles?

I'm addicted to yankee candles tarts, I've got a frosted pumpkin one warming as I type.

The burner is on my dressing table and you can smell it as soon as you get to the top of the stairs even when it's not lit.

M&S do a fab lemon one for £5 it lasts for ages. Brought some prices ones and didnt think they were that good.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 28/10/2011 21:56

M&S ones are nice. I buy Elemis ones and also Diptyque. Yankee candles give me migraine unfortunately.

sugarandspiceandallthingsnice · 31/10/2011 10:37

Partylite candles are lovely and last for ages. However, you can either buy them on ebay or from a seller (think avon etc) rather than from the shops. They are more pricey but lovely and smell gorgeous.

Yankeecandlequeen · 31/10/2011 17:14

I prefer wax tarts to the Yankee jars - find them too expensive. I also use oil burners. I buy lots of oils at the shop round the corner for about 60p per bottle. Bargain!

scarlettsmummy2 · 31/10/2011 17:18

I second partylite- they are also american, but Jo Malone really are fab if you can justify the price. The pomegranate noir is lovely. The White Company do some nice ones too and are a bit more reasonable.
