The thing is, your laundry probably does smell lovely, but you are so used to it, you can't smell it any more. I used to think exactly the same thing until a friend came over one night and said(as she walked through the front door)'Oooh! you've been washing! smells lovely'.

Persil bio (sick of non-bio, just never got anything clean) and Sensitive Comfort (which doesn't smell of much actually) and then line dried. It's what my Mum used, and friends have always commented on how nice my laundry smells!! (probably because the house is always full of it)

Have tried many fabric conditioners. The best I have found (for the smell!) is the Infusions (think they are Comfort?) specially the black diamond and the similar red one. Am at work so can't check labels. They are b... gorgeous. Most others don't snell of much. Sainsburys brings out a special Christmas/Winter one every year which is so lovely I stockpile it

i heart fairy, save it for bed clothes though.
persil reminds me of old people's home when i used to work and all its connotations

I use Fairy laundry Gel, which smells nice, or Sainsburys Non Bio. I use either Fairy fab conditioner (the original one) or one of the green fab conditioners. eg. Comfort Rainforest, Tesco own brand green, in fact most of the green fab conds smell nice IMO.

PS. Sorry for resurrecting this old thread. I did a search for laundry.

You can get fabric conditioner sheets that go into a tumble drier - I think they are called Bounce.

Method laundry liquid is heaven in a bottle.

You need a tumble drier.

Seriously, I have tried everything and this is the only thing which makes any difference. It's something to do with the heat, I think, although drying on heated clothes airers doesn't work. (Drying outside in the summer sometimes does).

mumdebump I might order some of that with my online Tesco shop. Is it the Fresh Air one or the Peony one that smells heavenly?

Report
mumdebump · 03/04/2012 16:59

MrsBeakman The Peony one smells heavenly but Fresh Air one is v nice too in a not-obviously smelling kind of way if that makes sense. :)

Given the recommendations for Fairy non-bio on this thread, thought I would tell you all that Tesco currently have the giant 72-wash box half price - £10 instead of £20!

I have the opposite problem, trying to find a fabric conditioner that doesn't smell of anything, because they all make me heave. I use Fairy non-bio tablets which are unperfumed, need to go and have a good browse in Sainsburys for FC I think (definitely one instance where shopping online isn't good)

I bought that Method Laundry Freah Air liquid Mumdebump, thinking it would be nice and natural but I found it overwhelmingly strong. I'm using it a drop at a time for handwashing my bras to use it up but when I used it on a machine load of clothes I had to re-wash them because they were giving me a headache.

Have you tried white vinegar? you don't need to use too much and the vinegar smell disappears as it dries.

goinggetstough · 17/04/2012 19:14

wellwisher do you know if the white wine vinegar gets rid of clothes that smell of damp? How much vinegar did you put in and where did you put it - in the drum or powder compartment? Thanks

Wellwisher, thanks, I did try it once but didn't think it particularly worked, might not have used enough though. I put some in yesterday but by the time the wash had finished it was raining so I stuck it in the dryer which makes it soft anyway, line drying is the real test! I will try again once the weather improves.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes I don't know of an unscented fabric conditioner, although Waitrose own brand ones tend to have a more subtle scent than others i find. eg their white one that is a copy of Comfort Pure. It does have a slight scent, but not too strong IMO. On the other hand, if you don't like strong scents don't go anywhere near Persil Bio liquid or Comfort Rainforest as they have very strong scents!
Asda sensitive might be unscented possibly if you have one near you?

No Asda round here at all, I keep getting recommendations for Asda stuff on MN, need to keep a list for when I do get to one. There is a Waitrose near where I work, might go in for a sniff! I bought some Comfort Pure and had to throw it away as it was so strong (to me). I might also investigate Ecover. Thanks!

I just slosh about 50mls into the fabric conditioner compartment of the washing machine drawer. :)

I absolutely agree with your nose getting used to the smell.

I used to think my washing smelt of nothing - since I have got some stored clothes out of the loft and was nearly knocked over by the smell of fabric conditioner.I no longer use it,and all the stored stuff smelt really strongly(a horrible chemically smell).

Now I stick with Fairy or Persil,no fabric conditioner, and a line dry where possible.

But every so often if I have a wash I really feel I want to get 'hygienically' clean,I put a little diluted zoflora in the fabric conditioner compartment.

I have found a solution to this and it works great! Water softener tablets you can buy a pack of 15 from wilkos for £2 and its one per washwash. If you live in a hard water area the deposits in the water can cancel out the nice smell. My washing now smells lovely for the first time ever!

Gerty1002 · 19/11/2014 20:31

Zoflora instead of softener and use the extra rinse function. I alternate Zoflora fragrances. so I don't get used to the smell. The house smells wonderful when drying laundry and the washing machine smells nice, too!

I disagree that washing all over your housemates it smell nice - it makes mine smell damp! Even with fabric conditioner..
