Ladies - please help me choose a new vacuum!

I need one that can handle very long dog hair. I mean, dulux dog long, and the twigs and other foliage that she brings in from her walks.

I am happy to pay dyson/miele/sebo prices, but I need to know which one can cope with this dog hair.

I'm not talking pet hair attachments that are no bigger than a hair brush as I don't have time to go over the whole house with a tiny brush head. I need the main machine to do all the work. I'm after one that pulls my carpets off the floor boards and all the dog hair with it.

Please help me mumsnetters - I am on my 3rd machine since adopting our lovely doggie, but aside from shaving her, I am at my wits end......

Yes, I believe you can also get a James, who is green

They have super-suction too which does actually lift my lino

Sebo - fab for pet hair and all different surfaces (we have tile/wood/rug/carpet).

Am loving my second hand Kirby. A friend has had dyson / miele for a long haired enormous giant size mega moulting german shepherd and he says the kirby is the best thing he ever did.

You can get good prices on ebay...they are monsters but make the house feel soooo clean

We only bought the Hetty because she was 25% off compared to henry but features the same iyswim.

Am a total covert though, nearly hoovered up DD's changing mat up this evening that DS (3) had flung on floor

But you do have to exercise caution, bcause they suck up EVERYTHING

Coins, cat toys, afore-mentioned Polly Pocket, beads, pen-lids... I could go on

All the builders use them too (according to DP anyway)

One of the reasons I love Henry is the metal (steel?) poles - Two previous pull along vaccums both had plastic poles - which broke!

I'd vote for Sebo-although I have got a friend who has a Newfoundland mutt (HUGE AND fairly long haired) and she swears by her Henry Vacuum.

I'm surprised that Henry is coming out on top at the moment, I was expecting Miele or Sebo.

Are they really good for dog hair, as well as Polly Pocket? I used one once when a builder left it overnight, just used it to clean up some of the building mess on the wood floor - it was great on the rubble, but I never thought to try it out on the dog-haired carpet upstairs - grrr!

Also going to look into the Kirby, puffylovett, because what you said about it making the house feel so clean is exactly what I am looking for.

I have a couple of Henrys, and my last vacuum was a Henry Hound - a bit bigger than a normal Henry and designed for pet hair. Def would not recommend it. Have had it about a year and a half (it's the second one as the first one developed a fault) and I can honestly say it is rubbish.

At the weekend I went to Comet to buy a Vax, as they had been advertising them on the TV at £99 reduced from around £250. I thought anything must be better that the bl*y Henry Hound. Anyway, the salesman talked me into a Miele cylinder vacuum. It's just the regular one, not the one specifically for pet hair. Cost about £160.

I LOVE IT!!!!!!

Gets everything off my wooden floors, and on the stairs and in the bedrooms, the carpets actually lift as you vacuum. It's got a metal, telescopic wand, the tools are on board, it's very light and easy to move around, and it has adjustable suction for vacuuming rugs etc.

My only complaint is that the power lead is not as long as on a Henry.

Having experimented with various bagless disappointments, I now have a numatic henry (the most basic one) and it's ace. It also has a really long lead and long hoses, and seems to be pretty much indestructible (it's survived falling down our uncarpeted stairs a couple of times).

The inlaws have a dyson (although quite an old one) and I don't think it's as good.

I also have a Henry, well a Hetty - couldn't resist the PINK!

We use these in the hotel I work and they last forever even when battered!!!!!!!!

Our cleaning company also uses them.

I have had a Dyson before and my Mum has a Dyson "Animal" but I would say the Henry beats this hands down for suction. Not bagless though but bags are cheap and you can get them everywhere.

Oh and yes builders use them too....

But not the pink ones ;)
