Who wants to join me in decluttering?

claireybee · 06/05/2009 10:30

Have noticed The Pile has extended to several piles in all rooms and we seem to have far to much stuff that doesn't really get used.

So I'm going to attempt to declutter...

I was thinking of going round room by room and anything that isn't where is should be or that isn't needed will get either put away, binned/recycled or given to charity.

I'm going to do surfaces and obvious clutter first, but I have a feeling this could lead to emptying out cupboards

Anyone want to join me? It's more fun to do it together . Any suggestions on how to go about it also welcome.

I am going to declutter the children's room today and the playroom tomorrow and I am going to be RUTHLESS!!!!!!!!

seeker · 06/05/2009 10:33

I'm in mid de-clutter now. Have been since just after Christmas!

claireybee · 06/05/2009 10:34

far too much stuff. Why did my typo have to be one of my most hated mistakes?!

claireybee · 06/05/2009 10:35

Hmm, ruthless...I'm not very good at that.

ME me me. I have been surfing about on here putting it off. I will begin by making coffee.

PlumBumMum · 06/05/2009 10:36

Hi Claireybee, Need to do the shelves in my living room

McDreamy · 06/05/2009 10:36

It's the only way to be when decluttering claire - or at least it is in this house!

Buda · 06/05/2009 10:38

I will join. I keep sort of starting and then stopping. Have piles of stuff everywhere. We moved into this house 2 years ago and some stuff got dumped in places as we moved and it has all stayed there. I bought new duvets and need to get rid of old ones. Got rid of singles beds so should get rid of single bedding and duvets. Etc Etc.

I never know where to start though so I end up wandering from room to room aimlessly.

I think I will start by doing a list of each room and what needs doing and then tackle one job a day.

cikecaka · 06/05/2009 10:40

I will join you, too much stuff and not enough room for it! Would love a shed!!

Bucharest · 06/05/2009 10:40

My piles are now complete rooms.
Have been trying to declutter since dd was born. And she's feckin 5.
My excuse/problem is that the laptop is in the corridor that I have to pass along to get anywhere...and the active convos is always open...and.....

seeker · 06/05/2009 10:41

Righn I'm going to make a cup of coffee, then set my timer for 30 minutes and see what I can achieve.

BuckBuckMcFate · 06/05/2009 10:42

Sorry not decluttering related but opened this thread and 1st post I saw read
'My piles are now complete rooms...'!
Well made me laugh

Bucharest · 06/05/2009 10:44

...and a little bit chafey it is too.....

littlelamb · 06/05/2009 10:45

I have been doing this for the last week. The dc's rooms are now sparkling and only have the toys they actually play with in them. It's a bloody miracle. I have done the same in every room too. Thrown out untold numbers of half used shampoo and various creams that were filling the bathroom, given the toys and books the dc didn't use to the doctors surgery for their waiting room, and given all the clothes I don't wear (which was an embarassing amount really, what a waste of money to the charity shop. It has made such a difference to the overall feeling of my flat. It's amazing how much crap clutter you can accumulate in a short space of time. Am now going to try and keep a strict policy of one in, one out with the stuff that I bring into the house and hope that it works

McDreamy · 06/05/2009 10:45

Trouble is I can't start until DD stops BF and she seems to be having a BF frenzy this morning!

BuckBuckMcFate · 06/05/2009 10:50

Would be a great hiding place for all that clutter though!

I love having a declutter day! 3 bin bags, keep, recycle, bin and then do one room at a time.

Then when it all done and clutter free, I have one of the big reusable shopping bags from the supermatket and go around the house once a day and put all the bits that have travelled around the house in it and return them to their proper place

Bucharest · 06/05/2009 11:01

Go on, you've inspired me...this thread and the ebay summer challenge one....

claireybee · 06/05/2009 11:17

Littlelamb you have inspired me. I want sparkling rooms!

Buda you sound exactly like me, I do the wandering around thinking where to start thing too.

Am going to start with the sitting room because it is the least cluttered, then the kitchen. I think dd's room and the playroom will be last because dd's wardrobe is the home of all the homeless stuff so I don't even want to go there and the playroom, well it's a playroom-full of useless bits of plastic tat.

Ok sitting room:
Pile of papers and books on side table
Hair stuff, pens, batteries, monopoly money on fireplace
Alan key and tooth powders on windowsill
Clothes hanger, hairbrush and lid of tub on floor
Whatever is lurking under the sofa

OP posts:
claireybee · 06/05/2009 13:13

Sitting room is done!

Kitchen is done! (surfaces not cupboards)

Dining room surfaces are done! (but there is a lot lurking in the depths of the sideboard so will need to allocate a day just to sort that out)

My room, ds' room and the bathroom are next. Ds is being very clingy though so not sure I'll get it done today...shame because I was on a roll.

Then once I've done the surface/obvious clutter in all rooms I'll venture into cupboards so that everything is organised.

Are you all too busy decluttering to report back?!

OP posts:
seeker · 06/05/2009 15:52

I've generated 3 bags of recycling, 2 bags of rubbish and 2 bags for the charity shop. My car is full - but it doesn't seem to have made any difference. Never mind, I've got tomorrow as well. And I'll get dd to go through one of her drawers this evening with the incentive that she doesn't get any new clothes til she has sorted out the ones she has.

claireybee · 06/05/2009 16:21

Wow you've done better than me, I stuck to the easy rooms so it was more tidying and putting things back in the right room than real decluttering. I filled the recycling box with all the bits of paper I found everywhere though.

But it does look a lot less cluttered.

claireybee · 07/05/2009 15:55

Haven't managed any today

alicecrail · 08/05/2009 18:20

Hello clairybee
I think i may have a bit of a declutter tomorrow. Dh is in france for the day and i will be bored want to surprise him!
Are you going to do some more?

claireybee · 11/05/2009 10:13

Did you manage to get any done Alice? Today's plan is to get out the summer clothes and sort through drawers getting rid of anything that is too small/hasn't been worn for ages etc.
