how many loads of washing do you manage to get dry in a day?

If you hang your washing up (one load) on the line at 9 am how many do you get dry a day? Just that one or one more? Garden is south facing with a bit of wind coming through as well.

I can do up to 3 on a good day - line space is my limit! Indoors it's one a day unless I resort to using the tumble dryer

LaurenIsMoreThanReadyToPop61 · 15/04/2009 12:16

my gardens also south facing with a breeze and id say 3 on a good day, depends on the clothes lol, in general 2 or 3

fromheretowhere · 15/04/2009 12:17

I have a fair amount of line space - exactly enough for one whole load. Its 2 long washing lines stretched across my garden. I dont have a tumble dryer anymore, we got rid of it when it caught on fire, then moved house and havent got a new one so done without since October. When the heating is on and I am drying on radiators it seems to take about a day for one load. I am just wondering how much I can anticipate getting through on nice summer days! I must admit I really love hanging washing out and then collecting it later. But as far as I am concerned it is a myth that it will dry just as well in the winter I tried and it bloody didnt dry at all.

oh lovely then I can have the pleasure of doing another load today! I so like hanging washing out I might start getting to the bottom of my washing pile!

So far today I have dried one load in the dryer plus my first load on the rotary line is semi dry and I have just hung another load out.

It's looking a bit grey out there though

LaurenIsMoreThanReadyToPop61 · 15/04/2009 12:22

ive never had a tumble dryer, and neither did my mum when i lived with her. use radiators through winter and can dry 2 loads if put washing in washer overnight and get it straight on raidators in morning

in summer i have clothes horse up in conservatory with windows open for stuff to dry on too, lighter things such as tshirts and thin stuff.

will use clothes horse for baby clothes too when he decides to come out =]

very in depth conversation about drying our washing i like it

fromheretowhere · 15/04/2009 12:22

Where are you, its still sunny here. I am thinking I need one of those things to maximise line space for socks & stuff.

fromheretowhere · 15/04/2009 12:24

yes I like being able to talk about it too! It can be surprisingly interesting and saddo all combined!

I dont have much luck with a clothes horse. I havent tried one in ages and actually dont know where mine is but it never seemed to get very much done.

Am in Norfolk, weather lady said hottest day of the year so far but it's not looking promising.

fromheretowhere · 15/04/2009 12:27

huh I am in Essex/Suffolk border so not a million miles from you. DH did tell me it was supposed to be hottest day of the year so far.

4 on a good day (like at the moment) but I do get it out earlier than 9.

fromheretowhere · 15/04/2009 12:31

4 flippin heck that is impressive. What time do you start? I thought I was really cleaner of the year for being out there at 9!

3 if I have to.

But it isn't reliable so I tend to try not to do more than 2.

BUT I have to do at least one otherwise we sink under the European washing mountain

fromheretowhere · 15/04/2009 12:39

ByThePower I am with you on that! And you know what I truly despise is folding washing and putting away. But REALLY what I hate is hanging clothes up on hangers. It is like the nails on chalkboard household task for me and consequently I dont do it. I really really hate it, irrationally so. So I leave it in a pile and wait for DH to hang it up as he doesnt mind.

i like putting it away!! its like a relief to see it all back away nice and clean

...just for it to be back in the washing machine a week later but hey ho!

fromheretowhere · 15/04/2009 12:52

ugh sorry I hate it. That and washing dishes I hate. I load and unload the dishwasher as many times as it takes but if it has to be washed by hand DH does it. Those are the only 2 jobs I can think of I really seriously avoid doing.

3 or 4 loads depending whether i start the was the night before. I tend to hung a couple of washes out by 8am.

TracyK · 15/04/2009 12:58

I currently can get 2 done as my sun doesn't come round to the side of the house till lunchtime.

I've got one of those clothes peg thingys for sock and knickers etc - it's great - don't have to faff about with individual pegs for skittery wee things.

I'm thinking of moving my washing line to the sunniest/windiest part of the garden - but unf. it's t the front of my house on my decking! Not the prettiest sight!

A couple of my radiators are under bedroom windows - so I hang my hangers on the curtain poles above and they dry in under an hour - when the heating is on.

LaurenIsMoreThanReadyToPop61 · 15/04/2009 12:59

i hate washing up too, but then i feel guilty using the dishwasher out of laziness so i make myself wash them by hand!! DP is good with it, hes all "money/energy saving" so prefers to wash up than use dishwasher haha

TracyK · 15/04/2009 12:59

Plus I have a 30 minute wash option on my machine - which I use for most of ds' grubby but not muddy stuff.

fromheretowhere · 15/04/2009 13:06

ugh I must admit I truly care about the environment but I do not feel guilty about using my dishwasher. I know washing dishes by hand is a perfectly normal thing people do but I HATE IT. I truly truly hate it. I will do everything else. I actually enjoy scrubbing toilets. I dust, hoover, mop, sweep, tidy, polish, whatever.

Metatron · 15/04/2009 13:27

instore/poundstretchers has cheap but good sock hanging thingys.

FairMidden · 15/04/2009 13:33

I'm sure I've heard it said that modern dishwashers are actually more economical than hand-washing dishes - apparently they use less water

I'd buy into that much more if I actually owned a dishwasher!

I love getting the washing out on the line too - hate the condensation and chinese-laundry effect when I have to dry stuff indoors. I reckon on a breezy day I could manage 4 washes with a bit of organisation. We do have a tumble dryer but I'm too tight to use it unless it's been lashing rain for a fortnight and we're all naked.

psychomum5 · 15/04/2009 13:37

currently on my fourth load............hoping to do 6 today.

I never hang out undies (well, bra's excepted of course), or PJ's. they all get tumbled..even in the summer......but then 7 lots of undies are hell to hang out. especially when I have two teens who seem to think changing twice a day is the done thing!!
