DH's dog coming to live with us! Help me prevent my house smelling of dog.

We've lived abroad for a few years and DH's parents very kindly looked after the dog but it's time to have him back. I am not a dog lover and really do not like the smell of dogs. Tips on keeping a fragrant non doggy house required! I have already told DH that the dog needs to be regularly bathed and groomed but any other top tips?

I think it depends what type of dog you have. We home dogs whilst owners are on holiday and have carpet through most of the house but have laminate in the hall, kitchen and utility so that if dogs come in damp, and that is when they tend to smell the most, we leave them out there until they are dry (if they won't allow us to towel dry them). I must say that we had a golden retriever who was absolutely lovely but absolutely stank no matter how much we bathed him. Sorry I can't be of more help. Oh yes, we do spray carpet with febreze and hoover thoroughly.

yes hard floors are good, don't let the dog upstiars and keep the dog's bedding really clean too.

Drusilla · 06/04/2009 21:56

Hoover every day! Don't bathe the dog too often as this acn make them smell worse. They will produce more and more oil to replace that which has been stripped from their fur when you bathed them. IME dogs that are regularly bathed smell far worse than dogs that aren't.

keep him in the dog house (where my DH would also live if he brought home a dog!)

MuffinBaker · 06/04/2009 22:02

I thought dogs only smelt when wet.

Tortoise · 06/04/2009 22:05

My dog only smells when he is wet. I am sure my house doesn't smell doggy. Never noticed a smell in friends houses with dogs either.

bruxeur · 06/04/2009 22:08

Make sure the oil is really, really hot in the wok before you start, and keep the extractor fan running for a good few minutes afterwards as well.

MuffinBaker · 06/04/2009 22:10

???????????????????????????

cooking the dog is a bit extreme, no?

Lilyloo · 06/04/2009 22:11

lol

bruxeur · 06/04/2009 22:13

I suppose. I'm just a bit hungry. Advice stands, though. You could try a tempura, it might seal in the odour a bit better.

ABetaDad · 06/04/2009 22:14

McDreamy - I agree with your stance and I am a dog lover.

If your house is the only place the dog can live then I advise keeping it limited to kitchen/washroom/utility room with a tiled floor and do not let it enter any other part of the house ever. If you have space outside an outdoor kennel with a run is ideal.

My parents owned hundreds of dogs in their life and not one was ever allowed to go in any part of our house except the utility room and the kitchen. Most dogs we had just lived in a separate kennel complex with outdoor runs.

Yes wash and groom the dog quite regularly but not obsessively.

bruxeur ??????????

BreevandercampLGJ · 06/04/2009 22:15

Buy a decent hoover.

paisleyleaf · 06/04/2009 22:16

My friends got a dog, and their house doesn't have that canine smell too bad.
They got themselves a dyson.

FlorenceDaphne · 06/04/2009 22:19

Do not panic! Dog-owning does not necessarily mean a smelly house.

  1. Bath dog once a week.
  2. Buy a Miele cat and dog. Very good hoover.
  3. Brush dog outside whenevr you remember.
  4. Have its teeth cleaned by the vet.
  5. Open the window lots, especially first thing in the morning.

Good luck!

Quattrocento · 06/04/2009 22:22

I half-agree with Bruxeur

Kill the dog

But don't eat it

kikid · 06/04/2009 22:29

We never bath our dog.( THEY DO NOT NEED IT)
he likes a swim in the river now & again.
I hoover every day.
keep food bowls clean or feed outside.
brush every week.
keep bedding clean, wash every week.
There is no reason for a house to smell of dogs!

My house is not smelly, people are surprised when they see him..
Expect they thought they would smell him first!

Tortoise · 06/04/2009 22:30

Why take the dog to the vet for teeth cleaning?
Get dog tooth paste from pet shop and a baby tooth brush and do it yourself. I am meant to do my greyhounds teeth daily. He doesn't mind me doing it.

McDreamy · 06/04/2009 22:30

lol some advice I wasn't neccessarily expecting

Luckily I already have a dog and cat miele (in anticipation of dog coming to stay here)

We have carpet unfortunately . Kitchen not huge and I don't think dh would entertain the idea of a kennel outside. I really need this to work as I am dreading him coming but I know how much dh and the dcs are looking forward to it. I just don't do dogs

You don't have to do dogs, McDreamy

bruxeur · 06/04/2009 22:34

Ooh labs are lovely with hoisin sauce.

McDreamy · 06/04/2009 22:35

Well I always hated dogs in he past for this very reason (not now obviously) and am very houseproud, as I'm sure is everybody else posting here is and I can assure you that they really, really don't make your house smell. Says I with lovely 10 month old staffy cuddled up to me snoring like a boat coming into dock - the dog that is, not me.
