How to get rid of the smell of fox spray... from football boots?

Ds' boots got left outside a friend's house while he was having a playdate. Got them home to find them absolutely humming - smells like a fox has sprayed them... they definitely didn't smell like that when they left the house that morning, so not ds' feet that are to blame. Have tried washing them and just resorted to rinsing with a large bottle of Dettol. Any other suggestions? Don't want to have to shell out on new pair - season's nearly over and they won't fit him by the time it starts again.

I'd just leave them out to air and dry! Then keep them in his bootbag tip needed again, hopefully a very muddy game might help the smell disperse! Kids!

It's going to take more than mud, sadly!

Vinegar? It works for tom cat spray.

Are they Nike trainers/boots? A few months ago Watchdog did a feature about really stinky Nike Total 90s and Mercurials - there was a manufacturing problem that made them smell like really strong cat wee. No amount of airing outside or deodorisers got rid of the smell! If that's the case, you should be able to take them back to where you bought them for a refund. We had the same problem and JJB sorted us out.
