How do I clean up the grot that builds up

on the floor between the kitchen units and the fridge/oven/dishwasher? Whenever I'm cleaning the kitchen floor I always catch sight of the disgusting filthiness that is accumulating in those hard to reach places and it makes me feel quite queasy.

Not sure how to go about sorting it out though? (I really don't want to have to go moving my fridge and oven about)

I have the same problem. We have a cooker that is next to out kitchen units, neither are really moveable but the dirt between the 2 is gross.

Sorry that is no help whatso ever! Will bump for you though!

samsonara · 18/02/2009 12:33

yes the grease from cooking splatters attracts the dirt which sticks to it, I find that the cillit bang degreaser works well.

soon2befamilyof4 · 18/02/2009 12:34

But how do you get to it?

Servalan · 18/02/2009 12:49

Yes, getting to it is my problem too - it's too long and thin a gap to get cloths, brooms and brushes down!

Yes same here. It is only about an inch (absloute max, probably less) wide, but just enough so you can see it all buiding up.

We have recently discovered we have mice too so having a store of food building up down the side is seriously going to cause problems but I just don't see a way round. We rent too and if we brake the cooker trying to move it that is our expense.

beanieb · 18/02/2009 12:54

The only way I have managed to do it is get down on my hands and kness with a scrubbing brush and some cilit bang grease cleaner.

soon2befamilyof4 · 18/02/2009 12:55

WE can't get the scrubbing brush down the gap though! Thats the issue.

Lionstar · 18/02/2009 12:56

Use a microfibre cloth and a stick - that's the best I've got (we have a similar gap between the fridge and the units - urgh)

Train up some mice and make tiny jackets for them out of brillo pads?

alicecrail · 18/02/2009 13:00

You could block it so nothing can get down there? With some bits of wood.

GypsyMoth · 18/02/2009 13:00

You can buy a device that fits onto your Hoover and gets into all small books and crannys. I use a traditional feather duster, long handled and fits everywhere . Pull them out to clean properly tho. It's the only way! I last did mine in a fit of nesting madness when 41 weeks pregnant!

RiojaLover75 · 18/02/2009 17:57

Ruler with a damp cloth wrapped round it?

soon2befamilyof4 · 18/02/2009 19:15

Can I ask then, if the only way to do it is pulling out the cooker, how do you do it? I mean, all the wires or whatever go straight into the wall, which is why we have never done it. Seriously, a tootbrush etc is never going to reach! I might look into the hoover attachment though.

psychomum5 · 18/02/2009 19:20

I scrape it out with a sharp little knife, only used for that job. you need the sharpness as grease dries pretty hard.

soon2befamilyof4 · 18/02/2009 19:25

It would need to be a pretty big knife to get all the way down the side of a cooker though?

psychomum5 · 18/02/2009 19:28

a big sharp knife then.

a bread knife would work.

I have also used skewers too, and they don;t bend but are still thin.

soon2befamilyof4 · 18/02/2009 19:49

My bread knives are certainly not as big as my cooker!! Would get some stuff out from near the front I guess, but no where near even half way down?

Dilettante · 18/02/2009 19:51

When I had this in our last house I just used to pull the appliance out when it needed cleaning down the sides.

soon2befamilyof4 · 18/02/2009 20:04

But how do you pull out a cooker that is wired into the wall? I can't see behind it so worried about what damage it will do?

Dilettante · 18/02/2009 20:23

I used to unplug it...but it was electric, not sure how you would do it if it was gas.
