How many of you eat at the table as a family as opposed to in front of the tv???

I prefer to as it seems to keep the front room free of spills, cumbs etc, also like to teach the kids table manners and have a conversation. DH agrees but also doesnt see the harm in occasionaly eating in the front room sat on couch. What does everyone else prefer?

Table, except for on Saturdays, when we all eat in front the tv, and watch Harry Hill.

AttillaTheHan · 12/02/2009 16:46

We always eat at the table and we find that we have more family conversations there than anywhere else. Ds tells us all about school whilst eating his dinner.

We occasionally eat tea in front of the tv on saturdays but maybe once a month.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/02/2009 16:48

At the dining table. If the DC have friends over I them eat around our low coffee table sitting on cushions, but never with the tv on.

It's odd for us though as for dinner they tend to eat earlier than I am hungry so I sit with them and eat a little, then have more when they are in bed. Sometimes I sit at the table with the radio on, sometimes I eat at my desk in the study

imaginewittynamehere · 12/02/2009 16:51

We almost always eat at the table & together, no tv on. We have v. occasional tv dinner.

I think meal time together when you concentrate fully on each other is very important, DH & I have always done this even in our pre children days.

Blu · 12/02/2009 16:53

Table.

But if I am on my own in the evening I will often have my dinner in front of TV.

PandaG · 12/02/2009 16:56

mostly at the table the whole family together. some nights if the DC need to eat earlier because of a club they will eat togethre then DH and i will eat together later.

often on a Sunday we eat tea - crumpets/toast/teacakes type thing on the sofa in front of a DVD

think the whole family together will get harder as the children's after school activities gets later. I will continue to try to make it happen as often as possible though.

mileniwmffalcon · 12/02/2009 16:57

occasionally dd2 will have a kind of picnic lunch in front of the telly, but otherwise all meals at the table here (snacks after school in front of telly though, otherwise tea would never get made).

DanJARMouse · 12/02/2009 16:57

Table at all times.

If me and DH feel we would like to eat later then we will quite often sit on cushions either side of the coffee table in the living room, but then we are adults and can prevent spillages!

ProfYaffle · 12/02/2009 16:59

Breakfast always on the sofa, not sure why but a formal breakfast at the table is beyond me. All other meals at the table, largely for practical reasons such as containing the mess and washable floors.

BonsoirAnna · 12/02/2009 16:59

We never, ever eat in front of the TV. Table every day and every meal (except breakfast in bed for DD because it is freezing in our kitchen).

abraid · 12/02/2009 17:00

Never eat in front of the TV. Sometimes my husband does if he's home late and the children do about once a month. But I hate eating in front of the TV--very uncivilised.

FAQinglovely · 12/02/2009 17:02

we're currently eating front of that TV - but that's only because the dining room is still totally full of boxes and the table is still in the garage. It's not always switched on - though without DS3 strapped into the booster seat I do find it's a good "distraction" to keep him sat still to eat his dinner rather than running around the room with his food

NorbertDentressangle · 12/02/2009 17:04

We never eat in front of the TV, we always eat every meal at the dining table.

psychomum5 · 12/02/2009 17:06

at the table for every meal except fridays take-away, and sometimes saturdays, especially if dinner is late and Dr Who is on!

I am more relaxed now with the eating in the lounge as the children get older.......they are slightly less messy.

snigger · 12/02/2009 17:11

Every meal is at the table, only exception is occasional cheese on toast in my room if we're watching a film or Come Dine With Me five-in-a-row on a Sunday, but even that's just a snack.

badgermonkey · 12/02/2009 17:17

I think the replies so far are going to ensure nobody dare reply and say they eat on the settee every night!

Colonelcupcake · 12/02/2009 17:20

Kiddies eat at the table every meal they are 2 & 1, I eat breakfast and lunch with them dinner in lounge with tv or book, dp eats every meal in lounge at coffee table

midnightexpress · 12/02/2009 17:21

I am v impressed at how good everyone is. We are too - never ever eat in front of TV now we have children, though they are still small, so it's easy to sit at the table - they don't expect anything else.

As a child we almost always ate our evening meal in front of the box and I must say that I don't feel irreparably damaged as a result. But I hope we'll continue to eat at the table as they get older. If only because tv is such garbage these days.

georgiemum · 12/02/2009 17:27

Oh the shame... we have a living/dining room and we usually have the news or university challenge (all yelling out answers - yes, even the 4.5 year old) or Masterchef.

My mother will be turning in her grave (sorry for the disruption dad).

RedFraggle · 12/02/2009 17:31

Mainly at the dining table although have occasional "picnics" in the sitting room. I find my children eat more food sitting at the table, also less mess! They tend to roam around the sitting room and drop crumbs everywhere, at least at a table there is a from of damage limitation!

Also, I like to sit and chat rather than watch TV. Do sometimes slob out with a TV dinner though if the children have an early dinner for some reason and Dh and I eat after they are in bed.

Fimbo · 12/02/2009 17:35

We have most meals at the kitchen table. Sometimes dh and I slob out on a Friday night with the M & S meal deal/takeaway in the lounge.

hippipotamiHasLostThreePounds · 12/02/2009 17:37

We only eat in front of the tv when it is a Dr Who night. Because it is the one programme we all like, so I make something like fahitas or homemade burgers adn we munch picnic style in front of the tv.
(my parents used to do this with dsis and I when The A-Team was on and I have fond memories, hence our Dr Who ritual )

At all other times we eat at the table. Always.

ShannaraTiger · 12/02/2009 17:41

If we had enough room we would eat all our meals at the table. Unfortunately living room in our 2 bedroomed flat only fits a children size table and chair so they always sit and at the table (in front of the tv )

orangehead · 12/02/2009 17:43

Table, but occassional pizza night with dvd

atowncalledalice · 12/02/2009 17:43

At the kitchen table. DS1 sometimes eats separately if he's going somewhere/back late, but we have an enforced three nights a week family supper policy
