Anyones dc got a white bedroom ???

I promised dd2 that i'd decorate her room in 09 and she hasn't forgotten lol.

At the mo it is bright pink with disney princess border and she hates it.

I was thinking of doing the walls completely white and then having really bright accessories. She already has a white duvet cover with brightly coloured spots on and I have seen a few others that would go too.

Thing is, will I regret painting it white ??

Oh and if the room was white then what colour furniture ?

Dd is 9 by the way if that makes a difference.

Yes dd has a white bedroom. She has a cheeky monkey fabric for her duvet and curtains (bright coloured monkey/lion/giraffe etc pattern). I made bunting out of lots of fabric samples in lovely colours. Bright rugs, one is made of bright yellow rags in the shape of a duck, one blue, one orange. Prints on the wall. Couple of bits of art I did for her. I like it an awful lot.

Podrick · 28/12/2008 19:18

My dd has 3 white walls and one that is cerise pink. Furniture is all white. It's lovely!

IllegallyBrunette · 28/12/2008 19:19

Ah was just going to ask if white furniture would be ok or if that was too much white.

I really like the idea of having it all white as then she isn't limited as to what bits and bobs she wants to go in the room.

My dd much younger than yours. The bunting would work well though and some subtle fairy lights too.

like this for her age- I like the feminine accessories.

here I like the beanbags/bunting stuff.

Gingham would be nice too.

IllegallyBrunette · 28/12/2008 19:21

That stuff on the first link is lovely.

She did want Rachel Hale dog covers and curtains and I was dreding relling her that most places seem to be out of stock, but she was fine and I am secretly quite pleased as I wasn't overly keen on them.

All I have to say is it makes the room very light early in the morning in summer so get a black out blind!

Shoshe · 28/12/2008 19:43

I did this for DGD (one tip paint with kitchen or bathroom whit paint wipes off easier)

We did it in 'different shades' of whites walls where brilliant white, painted old whicker furniture with ivory white, she had a throw for he bed in 'old' white sort of thing.

it looked brilliant and we could up date it as she got older.

IllegallyBrunette · 28/12/2008 19:50

Thanks all.

She does already have a black out blind which might still go as it is a bright lilac colour.

Just wish I had the money to get started on it right now, especially as I have just seen a white thuka midsleeper bed for sale for £175.

ds1's walls are white. the sloping ceiling is sky blue with clouds. dark blue carpet, some red furniture & red rug, colourful pictures. i love it

asicsgirl · 28/12/2008 19:51

oh and showofhands, i made bunting too

Shoshe · 28/12/2008 19:56

IB we got a bunk bed for DGD from free cycle, stripped it, and painted it creamy white.

Then put blue fairy lights under the top mattress, and made curtains to go around the bottom bunk (we did pink and purple originally then white lace as she got older).

The top bunk we covered in pink furry fabric, with HUGE furry white cushions, she used this bit as a sofa.

We have a fire damaged stock place here where I bought all the fabric for £30.00.

It looked beautiful, and although it took work was really cheap.

IllegallyBrunette · 28/12/2008 20:33

Wow Shoshe, would you like to come and do dd's ?

Shoshe · 28/12/2008 20:45

You know it was the first time I had done anything like it really, it was so much fun, i got a book called decorating with white or something like that and some old Laura Ashley books from a charity shop and got the ideas from there.

EachPeachPearMum · 28/12/2008 20:54

Shoshe- that sounds gorgeous!

DD's room is white, with white wardrobe, shelves, and cotbed (she is 2.10, so a lot younger than your DD ib) She has bedding from ikea (white with blue roses) and Little White company. I want to get some gingham bedding when she moves up to a single bed next year.

It does look nice, and of course, it can be easily updated- we haven't put much on the walls- it's quite a small room, and bookcases take up one wall, the wardrobe and bed another. Tbh, I don't really want her too excited when she's in there anyway

What will you do with the floor? We have a pale beige carpet, but I would love a painted wooden floor... might be a bit nippy though!

singyswife · 28/12/2008 20:55

I painted my dd's room white and HATED it. She had yellow curtains and duvet with bug things on them (in pastel colours). She used to stick her feet out of the bed at night and the wall right along her bed was really disgusting (might be why someone suggested washable paint). I painted her room 2 weeks before xmas as I couldnt stand the white any longer. One plus side is that white paint is the cheapest and you can change the room with just accessories etc.

Shoshe · 28/12/2008 20:59

We are in a Army house so had no choice of flooring, lucky for us it was a beige, and I bought a big white fluffy rug.

yes definitely use washable paint we used Bathroom Paint.

IllegallyBrunette · 28/12/2008 22:13

Flooring will be beige carpet, possibly with a rug. Her room would be too cold with any other type of flooring.

The trick is to use a lot of different white shades, Go and get a colour chart and have a look.

We used antique white on the wardrobe and heavy ivory velvet curtains, which make things warmer.

christmasDECOration · 28/12/2008 22:47

illegally brunette - where did you find the thuka bed on sale?

NotanOtter · 28/12/2008 22:50

dd room white with 1 wall a la on my profile

ninedragons · 28/12/2008 23:04

I love white rooms for children. I've never understood why people paint them hot pink - surely the point is not to stimulate your children but to calm them down and get them to sleep?

In addition to Soshe's trick of different white shades, textures come to the fore in white rooms. Think along the lines of nubbly carpet or sisal (if you can afford to replace the floor coverings), waffle-weave sheets, fake fur throws etc. Blackout blinds are useful but expensive to replace - could you put a curtain rail with white curtains in front of it, so you still get the benefit of the blackout fabric but not the obnoxious colour?

It'd be fun for your daughter to be taken to Matalan or TK Maxx and allowed to chose her own accessories.

ninedragons · 28/12/2008 23:10

Just re-read your OP and saw the question about furniture. DD (still a baby and too young to care) has white walls, sage green blackout curtains and bedspread and very plain wooden furniture. It has a large watercolour of a street in London and another one of a sleeping cat that my dad gave me when I was a child. It's very austere (it would only take a cross on the wall to make it look like a nun's cell, if I'm being honest) but as I said, I don't want her lying in her cot goggle-eyed at the exciting decor when she's supposed to be having a nap.

NotanOtter · 28/12/2008 23:17
