Please tell me - are Dysons really good?

I need a new vacuum cleaner. I am a bit in the dark, but have fancied an upright Dyson for a while. Anyone have any views please?
Many thanks!

i love mine but they get mixed reviews on MN

i have got a Dyson baby ball

it is suitable for hard and soft flooring and it is very lightweight

PheasantPlucker · 28/11/2008 14:58

Thanks (love the Cmas name!). I need one for wooden and carpetted floors, so your model sounds good.

I loved my Dyson but unfortunately it died last year. Its (non-Dyson) replacement is crap so I want another one.

It put up with all sorts of abuse like building dust over the years.

I think they are like Marmite though so you'll get people on here who love them and those that hate them

GentleOtter · 28/11/2008 15:00

I have been disappointed with Dyson - they are ok for the first couple of weeks then lose suction as well as always being unscrewed and meddled with. A faff.

We are using a Sebo Felix now and it is very good but you have to buy bags for it.

PheasantPlucker · 28/11/2008 15:00

Thanks, which one did you have?

i hated my Dyson. It was too heavy and it wouldn't pick up well if the cylinder was over 1/2 full - it was an early model though.

Now have a Miele which is great.

rislip · 28/11/2008 15:01

I've got the dyson animal upright. And since I have a large dog it gets quite a work out. It's never failed and really does an amazing job.

rubyslippersisappearinginpanto · 28/11/2008 15:02

mine is the left one

the handle pushes all the way down so it is very compact to store

the lead is fairly long - i have a big lounge/diner and it can easily do the whole room without having to unplug

Geepers · 28/11/2008 15:03

I have a Dyson Animal which comes with the specific hard floor attachment and is £180 (£120 off) in Comet at the moment.

I love, love, love it. I have never had a hoover that leaves carpets looking new before, and the small brush head for the car is fabby.

I definately recommend them.

chocolateteapot · 28/11/2008 15:07

I've had two, they were both rubbish, now have Miele which is very good.

Grammaticus · 28/11/2008 15:15

I had a rubbish dyson. Kept losing suction and the attachments break. The market stall man says he makes a good living out of replacing these!

Now have a miele - lighter, quieter and sucks better.

PheasantPlucker · 28/11/2008 15:54

Ok, so I should look at Miele too then? But Dyson Animal seems good? Will check RubySlippers' link now too. Thanks for all the input.

mummydoc · 28/11/2008 15:57

mine is rubbish i hate it, useless suction would never have another one

pagwatch · 28/11/2008 15:58

i have had two. both total crap.

fluffles · 28/11/2008 16:00

mine is sucky enough but too bulky and doesn't go under anything so you can always see a line where the dust begins under the furniture

Fizzylemonade · 28/11/2008 20:56

agree they are heavy but I love my Dyson (boo hiss to the rest of you )

I have had it 9 years, fully serviced by Dyson once, still going strong despite serious abuse like cleaning up after knocking down wall

They are like marmite, love em or hate em

twoluvlykids · 28/11/2008 20:59

I've had 2 rubbish Dysons, now have the Vax upright Animal which is great for tackling the dog hair.

Similar to Dyson - bag free.

mysonsmummy · 30/11/2008 08:43

as a cleaner ive used them all.

the dyson ball is good if you have a BIG house.

but for me you cant beat the miele - found one the other day for £125. have to buy bags though and they are not cheap.

mysonsmummy · 30/11/2008 08:44

ohh and the sebo fleix is the good suction but sooo expensive. and falls over alot

bluebump · 30/11/2008 11:21

Our Dyson is good at cleaning but I find it really heavy to take up and down the stairs. It's an ancient grey one with lime green bits on it. I am tempted to try the one with the ball now.

blueshoes · 30/11/2008 11:36

We have a dyson. I get other people to hoover (dh, aupair, cleaner) because the dyson just looks so unwieldy, especially going up and down stairs. Our next hoover will be a friendly Henry.

jeee · 30/11/2008 11:41

Dyson = disaster. Henry = wonderful. Let's face it, professional cleaning firms all use Henry. It's cheap, cheerful, and really good at cleaning.

mysonsmummy · 30/11/2008 15:17

and the henry is completely bulky, awkward and heavy

Lilymaid · 30/11/2008 15:20

John Lewis warehouse is full (according to DS who works there on Saturday) of broken down Dysons going off for repair. Buy a Miele.

tassisssss · 30/11/2008 15:25

I had an upright dyson and really didn't like it. Far too heavy for me. I sold it to a colleague.

I LOVE my Henry and am ridiculously pleased that my girls are getting a matching toy one for their Christmas!! I bought my sister a pink Henry recently and actually quite fancy one for myself, but seeing as lovely Dh does most of the hoovering, I'm not sure I'd get away with that!
