but which do I do first? Put it on with the cleaner stuff in it, or clean the filter out??

I'd do filter before & after.

I never use the cleaner stuff - my instructions just recommend hottest wash with powder once a month.

Good luck!

guyFAwkesreQuiem · 21/11/2008 13:01

thanks bella - was thinking maybe before and after would be a good idea - my washing machine also recommends hottest wash with powder..........but it hasn't been done for ermm, quite some time, so I thought I'd give it a blast with the cleaner stuff to get it ok again lol.

Clean a washing machine?? How do you do that? I inherited my machine from previous owners so no manual... Seriously? Clean?

miamla · 21/11/2008 13:04

i'm with you Eyeballs!

guyFAwkesreQuiem · 21/11/2008 13:09

well yes I'm a slattern too - hence it looking rather manky when I open the drawer now - dread to think what the inards look like .

But now I'm totally up to date with the washing (well the washing part - still got a pile to dry, and a massive pile to iron) and I'm child free this weekend - so 2 days witout having to do a load I thought I'd try and make it look nice again.

I clean my washing machine...and love taking the drawer out and leaving it to soak in bioling water and it looks brand new after..i often find money in the filter too

Oh no. Where's the filter?

stardazzle · 21/11/2008 13:14

where would i find the filter bit of my washing machine? i have never cleaned mine any more than just taking the draw out and degunking it.

guyFAwkesreQuiem · 21/11/2008 13:14

my filter is down on the bottom right at the front of it - behind a little "square" cover thingymajig.

OP posts:
Grammaticus · 21/11/2008 13:17

Ok - don't think mine is on the front. I'll (get DH to) pull it out and look for a square cover on the side.

bella29 · 21/11/2008 13:18

I have always known where my filter is since having to call out a plumber to my 'leaking' machine when I first left home - £60 to clean my filter taught me

Grammaticus · 21/11/2008 13:20

And where is it? (Clues needed here!)

guyFAwkesreQuiem · 21/11/2008 13:21

oops Bella - not good

OP posts:
bella29 · 21/11/2008 13:21

On mine it's a little square door near the bottom of the machine. You should find a round thing that screws out - not very elegantly, phrased, I admit!

guyFAwkesreQuiem · 21/11/2008 13:22

bella - it's better than my "thingymajig"

OP posts:
bella29 · 21/11/2008 13:22

I know, guyfawkes!

And I have to admit to not doing the hot wash as often as I should.

But I am too slatternly to buy the cleaner

bella29 · 21/11/2008 13:24

Thingymajig is, I believe, an accepted technical term for filter. So the plumber told me anyway

Grammaticus · 21/11/2008 13:27

What cleaner? Blimey, I thought I was pretty unslatternly but I am 38 years old and never knew I was supposed to do anything over and above taking out the drawer and washing it!!

You're going to tell me this is why the grey door seal thing goes mouldy, aren't you...

AnAngelWithin · 21/11/2008 13:27

i cant see a filter on mine i usually just put it on the hottest wash with nothing in once a month to clean it. now where is my filter?? have ALL machines got one??

guyFAwkesreQuiem · 21/11/2008 13:29

well I looked at the drawer yesterday (which is looking dreadful) , and all the manky bits inside the rubber bit of the door seal and decided it was due a clean - I had to go and buy washing powder anyhow so dared to look along the same aisle for something to clean it with

OP posts:
bella29 · 21/11/2008 13:45

tsk, tsk, at all you slatterns

No, I'm really not much better. TBH, at the risk of upsetting guyfawkes, I do think a lot of these appliance cleaning products are just a rip off. Bio powder on a hot wash with nothing in will probably do the same job.

Do clean your filters, though, guys!!!

bella29 · 21/11/2008 13:47

Oh, and Angel, I think they all do. Pretty sure they do. Look in your manual - you know, the one filed neatly with all your other appliance manuals....

AnAngelWithin · 21/11/2008 13:48

it has a manual?!
